Chapter 14: It Was Her!
The class was “kind of fun” as usual, but beyond that minor entertainment, it could only be described as “super boring.”
Bai Yan found his phone more interesting—or rather, Babel Tower.
Sitting quietly in the back row, he took out his phone to check on Nightsaber in auto-play mode and review her daily record.
“Daily record for Nightsaber.”
“Relax in Recovery Spring. Mood returns to 8. Full of energy!”
“Arrive at school. Think about swordsmanship in classroom. DEX +1.”
Nightsaber had finished today’s training and battled in the weekly mission three times. With no random missions available, she was now in auto-play mode.
Her pixel figure walked around on the screen. Even though Bai Yan was simply staring at his phone in a daze, he found it more engaging than listening to the lecture.
After all, she was his avatar, such a marvelous character.
Then, Bai Yan had an epiphany.
In Babel Tower, the Savior wasn’t always destined to be an outsider. He too possessed mighty superpowers.
After recruiting two Core Operators, the Savior could unlock his initial ability—Power Possession.
According to the background description, it was a powerful ability of ruling and seizure. The Savior could take his Operators’ power at will and apply it to himself. However, there was no visible indication of this in the game… because the Savior himself never participated in any missions.
“But under the current circumstances, will I see the effects of Power Possession in reality?” A new thought crossed his mind.
Since the game had become reality, would it be possible to share abilities with the Savior? ‘Could I become someone with superpowers?’ The thought made Bai Yan take a deep breath.
Though excited by the possibility, it remained merely speculation for now. There was still a long way to go before collecting enough points for a 10-summon. Still, imagination alone was enough—the mere possibility of having superpowers gave Bai Yan plenty of motivation!
‘It’s not much fun just looking at the pixel figure. Let me watch the video.’
Bai Yan accessed Babel Tower’s account and started reviewing its first video. Apart from the monster, only Nightsaber appeared in the footage. Without messy crowds of onlookers, he could observe her more clearly.
‘She becomes more beautiful every time I look. She doesn’t seem like someone from reality at all.’
‘Wow, nice close-up! I can see her clearly!’
Bai Yan paused the video and zoomed in with three fingers. Studying the magnified image, he frowned slightly. He had an inexplicable sense of déjà vu.
That white hair and amazing figure looked vaguely familiar. Gradually, the character in Bai Yan’s mind overlapped with Mu Ling.
He froze. ‘No way!’
Once the thought emerged, it was impossible to dismiss. Bai Yan began comparing Mu Ling’s appearance to the video. ‘The color and length of her hair, the perfect shape of her body… they’re identical.’
Bai Yan also recalled something crucial. The other day, she had approached him despite them being complete strangers.
“Master, why did you come here?”
“Master, I know I’m not powerful.”
“I was just like an insect at the bottom of your shoes.”
“But… thanks for giving me the chance to become stronger.”
Those were her exact words. Bai Yan, being naturally perceptive with an incredible memory, fully recalled their conversation. She had also said, “I see.”
‘So, it is true?’
Bai Yan opened the Core Operator’s information. A subtle smile formed on his lips. ‘I can’t believe it…’
Not everything could be explained by coincidence, so he was almost certain.
Bai Yan never expected that Nightsaber wasn’t merely his avatar but a real person—even his schoolmate, that ice queen herself. Such incredible coincidences were almost frightening.
Indeed, Bai Yan was already somewhat scared.
‘What if Nightsaber discovers I’m only an ordinary person and kills me?’
‘Let’s be optimistic,’ he thought. Nightsaber was a decent person who refused to kill innocents.
‘But she won’t appreciate being dominated by a stranger.’
‘No one would.’
Bai Yan needed to devise a way to prevent Nightsaber from becoming a threat to him in reality.
‘That’s it—Power Possession!’
If Bai Yan could summon the second Operator, he would gain the Savior’s initial ability—Power Possession—and might obtain the superpower he dreamed of. Once he could rule and seize Core Operators’ power, he would never fear their betrayal. Lost in these thoughts, Bai Yan remained distracted throughout the class.
The professor noticed that Bai Yan kept staring at his phone during the first half of class. Though he finally put it down during the second half, his mind clearly wandered. He wasn’t listening at all. ‘This boy is incorrigible!’
‘He was a poor student who studied so hard to qualify for Herendor in the past. I didn’t expect him to abandon himself like this in just two years!’
‘Be ashamed of yourself, Bai Yan! Is there anything more important than class?’
‘What else do you want to do besides study? Save the world?’
Oblivious to the professor’s thoughts, Bai Yan felt his phone vibrate. He immediately checked it and found a new random mission. The location was a university.
‘Could it be Herendor University?’
Bai Yan startled slightly. He selected Nightsaber, whose Mood had recovered, to enter the random mission’s battlefield. The enemy was a powerful cultist capable of shapeshifting into a terrifying monster. As a Spawn named “Child of the Star,” it served the Chaos Star. Its form was a giant octopus with hideous black wings, and its body could transform and reform to an extreme degree.
Bai Yan directed Nightsaber to attack repeatedly, but the effects were minimal. The monster could transform its body at will, making it immune to physical attacks. Only the mysterious power of Hunters could inflict even slight damage.
‘I can handle this.’
If this had been his first playthrough, Bai Yan might have been helpless. But having encountered similar monsters before, he knew how to deal with this one.
Nightsaber ceased her direct attacks. Instead, she began tapping the screen edge with her weapon. After a while, several torches fell. Bai Yan commanded Nightsaber to collect the torches, rush toward the monster, and throw them at it.
“Ow!” The horrific octopus cried out in pain, writhing as it was repeatedly struck by torches. The raging pixel flames proved fatally effective against it!
Bai Yan’s fingers danced across the screen. This time, he easily defeated the enemy in one attempt.
“Mission accomplished.”
The beautiful white-haired girl in black gently sheathed her broadsword. Her purple-red eyes remained cold and distant.
The monster collapsed and vanished, but unusually, it wasn’t consumed by black fog. Bai Yan frowned. Though unusual, this was possible—someone might have rescued the monster.
“Victory, Babel Tower Legendary Point +50.”
“Failed to capture new monster.”
“New reward: Blood Evolution Injection K355 (R).”
The rewards weren’t bad, primarily due to the precious Blood Evolution Injection, which functioned similarly to medicine for attributes. Without hesitation, Bai Yan used it on Nightsaber.
Instantly, Nightsaber’s attributes changed. Her STR increased dramatically from 42 to 57—a significant improvement of 15 points!
Bai Yan clearly remembered that Babel Tower could mass-produce this powerful injection once the relevant infrastructure was built. Unfortunately, each Core Operator could only receive a maximum of three injections before they became ineffective. The injection’s primary purpose was to compensate for Core Operators’ bodies being otherwise identical to ordinary people’s.
“It’s so easy,” Bai Yan sighed and smiled.
He lowered his phone and realized the classroom was empty. It was getting late; other students had left for the cafeteria, restaurants, or food stands outside the university.
Bai Yan froze.
Mu Ling—no, perhaps he should call her Nightsaber—stood there wearing a black V-neck dress that fit her perfectly. A black cross necklace adorned her fair neck. Her stunning face was angelic, and her purple-red eyes sparkled like delicate gems.
Nightsaber stood silently at the door, her face expressionless as she gazed at Bai Yan. He felt nervous. His dream girl had appeared before him just like that.
What did she want?
