Chapter 105: Are You Deliberately Finding Fault With Me?
Bai Yan had already discovered the latest feature of the evolved Babel Tower.
After selecting each “operator,” a brand-new option—observe—appeared below.
Observe?
“Come to think of it, this is indeed related to my ability, ‘Game.’ Ever since I acquired extraordinary powers, the contents of the Babel Tower have been constantly changing,” Bai Yan mused as he scrubbed the pots.
“If I could reach the levels of ‘Awakening,’ ‘Crown,’ or even ‘Apocalypse,’ I wonder what earth-shattering changes would occur in the Babel Tower.”
Apparently, the improvement of his gaming skills was only one aspect of the extraordinary power of “Game.” Its true purpose seemed to lie in developing the Babel Tower.
After tidying up the kitchen, Bai Yan took off his apron, grabbed his phone, and settled onto the living room sofa.
He first selected the Core Operator “Nightsaber” from the operator list and then clicked on the new observe option.
Soon, the new function began to take effect.
A video screen popped up, revealing a girl with silver-white hair, an exquisite appearance, purple-red eyes, and an almost perfect figure.
There was no mistaking it—it was a live broadcast. The timestamp in the top left corner of the screen read 7:20 AM, according to Air Alliance time.
Bai Yan knew without a doubt that it was currently 7:20 AM.
“Nightsaber,” whose real name was Mu Ling, had already woken up. In the video, she calmly walked into a grand bathhouse resembling those of ancient Rome, most likely preparing for a bath.
She had no idea she was being watched by the “Savior.”
The live-streamed video had remarkably high clarity—essentially identical to the original picture quality. Bai Yan could zoom in and rotate the view by using three fingers, just as he had done with previous videos.
The camera followed Mu Ling’s movements, and Bai Yan tried dragging the live stream to the side. While it was possible to shift the frame slightly, the camera could not stray too far—Mu Ling herself had to remain within view.
The live stream could not be rewound, paused, or fast-forwarded. Bai Yan could only silently watch Mu Ling’s activities in real time.
“It’s a pity there’s no recording function, only live streaming…” Bai Yan muttered to himself.
He suddenly realized that the evolution of the Babel Tower might not solely be due to the “Game” ability, but also to the influence of “Connection.”
The two new functions of Babel Tower clearly strengthened its ties to the Core Operators.
In the scene, Mu Ling appeared relaxed. Bai Yan had been watching the live stream all morning, gaining a glimpse of this other side of her daily life.
She wasn’t a bloodthirsty maniac or a merciless hunter. In her everyday life, she experienced confusion and joy—emotions that belonged to an ordinary girl.
Of all the scenes, the one that impacted Bai Yan the most was when Mu Ling went to a coffee shop to enjoy a simple cup of coffee.
That moment gave him a strong sense of “reality” regarding Mu Ling’s existence as a woman.
“Mu Ling, I hope we can continue to work together happily,” Bai Yan whispered as he recalled a moment from the “Self Dimension.”
In his mind, he saw an angry and hateful Mu Ling swinging her sword, piercing through his chest—a vision of a possible future.
“This kind of future will never happen,” Bai Yan said to himself calmly.
***
When Bai Yan arrived at the office, he encountered a familiar face in a rather significant way.
Merete Chambers.
Her fair skin was noticeably flawless, accentuating her delicate collarbones. Above her chest, her pristine white eyelashes and long, flowing hair enhanced her ethereal beauty. A pale silver butterfly hairpin adorned her ear, gleaming softly above her blackish-purple irises.
Merete’s slight smile was as enchanting as ever, exuding an inexplicable sense of closeness.
It seemed that everyone had a natural liking for her—except for Bai Yan.
She was standing in the office of Team Twelve, smiling and chatting with Holly, who seemed very happy to have someone “visit” the 12th team.
After all, their team had a very poor reputation, and generally speaking, not many people came over.
“How could Miss Witch come to our team?”
Bai Yan instinctively became wary, sensing something was amiss upon seeing the “Moon Witch.” He had a feeling she might have some covert plan.
Holly, however, was extremely thrilled and walked over.
“This is great news! Absolutely fantastic news! Miss Merete is going to transfer to our team! Wonderful! Our team will finally have someone with a good reputation!”
Bai Yan was slightly stunned, and his suspicion grew stronger. He became alert but managed to smile.
“It’s amazing that there’s still good news like this,” he said.
Holly nodded and, realizing that standing between the two made her look short, took a step back.
Merete Chambers smiled at Bai Yan and said in a cheerful tone, “Hello, Bai Yan. From now on, the two of us will be on the same team. How do you feel? With a beauty like me suddenly joining, aren’t you excited?”
Bai Yan shook his head and replied, “No, I can only say that I am very welcoming. It’s completely unexpected that a popular person like you would join us.”
He paused for a moment, then smiled and said, “Could you tell me why you’re joining the 12th team? After all, our team’s reputation isn’t great, and I’m quite curious.”
Merete Chambers didn’t answer directly but said, “Maybe I joined because I’m interested in someone here.”
Holly was shocked and whispered, “Could Miss Witch and the captain be in a romantic relationship? No way!”
Meanwhile, Black Vulture was still asleep.
After chatting for a while, Merete Chambers found a spot in the corner, tidied up a table, and began staring out the window, lost in thought.
Bai Yan glanced at her profile for a moment and thought, “Hmm, quite beautiful.”
“She’s probably onto me…” Bai Yan mused, recalling his actions and realizing the flaws that might have attracted the witch’s sensitive attention.
Regretting now would be pointless; he could only be more careful in the future.
Firstly, it was no longer permissible to play “Babel Tower” in the office. Now there was a troublemaker even more troublesome than surveillance.
In the afternoon, Bai Yan went to the restroom on their floor.
The restroom’s décor in the Demon Hunt Agency was surprisingly impressive. As the saying goes, the quality of a place can be seen by the state of its restroom.
Just as he stepped out, Bai Yan saw Miss Witch waiting outside.
Merete Chambers looked at him with a smile that carried something unusual.
She approached him and suddenly pushed Bai Yan back into the restroom.
The door immediately slammed shut.
“What do you want to do?” Bai Yan asked, furrowing his eyebrows. What is going on with this woman? Is she deliberately looking for trouble?
Merete Chambers smiled and said, “Thirteen years ago, someone played a game with a member of the ‘Tower’ and achieved a great victory. But it seems he’s forgotten everything.”
Bai Yan frowned, realizing that her cryptic words referred to his own lost memories.
Merete Chambers stood in front of the mirror, as if speaking to herself:
“This year, after the emergence of Babel Tower, we confirmed the first member of their group—Mu Ling, a member of a declining hunter family.”
“I had private conversations with some of her classmates, and many mentioned that Mu Ling seemed to have had private communication with you before her identity was exposed.”
Bai Yan nodded calmly and replied, “Oh? And what does that imply? Alan has known this for a while.”
Merete Chambers shook her head with a smile but didn’t respond.
She continued speaking, as if to herself:
“Later, you reported the location of the Black Wizard Weasley to the Demon Hunt Agency, leading to his capture.”
“Coincidentally, the people from Babel Tower followed and took the poor Weasley away.”
Bai Yan shook his head and said, “What a pity we couldn’t catch the people from Babel Tower along with Weasley. All I can say is, don’t be too suspicious of enthusiastic citizens.”
“Yesterday, when I was exchanging information about Babel Tower with Adelaide, she mentioned that the ‘Savior’ referred to by the Babel Tower rescue team was a fake. I asked her how she was so sure. After pausing for a moment, Adelaide said, ‘Because Bai Yan said so, and he sounded very certain at the time.'”
Is it really such a minor detail that exposed me?
Bai Yan was slightly stunned.
Merete Chambers turned around, squinted her eyes, and smiled. Then, suddenly, she stepped closer again.
Bai Yan remained motionless, indifferent.
Merete Chambers narrowed her eyes and sniffed the air in front of Bai Yan’s chest with her delicate nose before speaking.
“As you thought, these aren’t really pieces of evidence—just small traces, and my own groundless speculation. But your scent… it concerns me. I can’t let it go.”
She paused for a moment before continuing, “So, I hope to join this team and get to know you better.”
Merete Chambers stepped back two steps, extending her excessively pale hand with a seemingly friendly smile. “Please guide me in the future.”
Bai Yan also smiled, though the meaning behind his smile was entirely different from Merete Chambers’s. Bai Yan understood Miss Witch’s purpose and could easily guess what she was thinking.
He remained unshaken and extended his hand as well.
“Great. Let’s work hard together and build a beautiful new society.”
After leaving the restroom, Merete Chambers’s figure gradually faded into the hallway until she was completely out of sight.
Moments later, she reappeared on a cloud-covered mountaintop.
White clouds encompassed everything around her, and Merete Chambers stood at the peak, as though she transcended all beings. Before her floated a black book, emanating faint yet perceptible vibrations.
The book, upon opening, revealed its immense size—nearly half a meter in both length and width. It hovered steadily in the air, radiating an air of mystery and power.
If anyone from the Black Wizard Weasley clan were to see it, they would undoubtedly be overcome with emotion.
For it was their ancestral heirloom, lost many years ago—the most valuable treasure of all.
This was no ordinary artifact. It was the ultimate relic, surpassing even “Civilization-level Relics.”
Merete Chambers calmly extended her fair fingers, gently flipping through the pages of the Book of Concealment, as though she were deeply familiar with it.
Book of Concealment.
She smiled pleasantly.
“For so many years, I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to enter Babel Tower… and I’ve finally found it.”
“Bai Yan.”
“Could you be an associate of Babel Tower?”
“Does that great ‘Savior’ truly pay attention to you?”
Her words seemed both inquisitive and rhetorical, as though questioning and answering herself at the same time.
The Book of Concealment contained countless secrets, recorded in a unified, classical black font. Every sentence, every word, held vital mysteries from countless worlds, and the book continued to grow, accumulating more secrets with each passing moment.
Now, all of these secrets were held in Merete Chambers’s hands.
And among these countless passages, one read:
“So, Babel Tower descended upon Tatsumi City.”
“Thus, the world fell into chaos.”
“And so, it became the ruler of the world.”
