Chapter 72: Only Signing One Artist?
“Alright~ So, when can I sign the contract?”
Jiang Mengwei twirled a pink pig-shaped pen in her hand.
If she continued her life as a quiet, honest music teaching assistant, there was no telling when her family might push her into a marriage for political or financial gain.
But if she built a career of her own, they’d have to think twice before forcing her into a union.
“Ah… tomorrow Yun-Xiao is holding a campus recruitment event. How about you join us then?”
Ye Xiao spoke without much thought, but immediately realized a potential problem—what if Jiang Mengwei went home, mulled things over, and changed her mind?
“Actually, let’s do it today. If you come with me to Yun-Xiao later, we can sign the contract immediately.”
“That works! Let’s go, then!”
Jiang Mengwei carefully placed the notebook Ye Xiao had used into her bag like a treasure—after all, it might hold the key to their future success.
Ye Xiao blinked at her behavior, amused. The notebook didn’t hold much except the sheet music for “Sunshine“.
The rest of the song titles were just placeholders. Even if someone got their hands on it, it wasn’t a big deal. Besides, “Sunshine” had already been published, and the copyright registration had been handled through Ye Youran. The song was now officially owned by Yun-Xiao.
“Wait for me, Sister Mengwei!” Ye Xiao hurried after her.
Jiang Mengwei’s car was a BMW Mini, almost identical to Li Mengyue’s. However, since Ye Xiao hadn’t seen Mengyue’s car, she remained oblivious to the coincidence.
Seated in the passenger seat, Ye Xiao couldn’t help but admire the car’s girlish interior.
“Sister Mengwei, I’ve sent you the company address already!”
“Got it!”
Jiang Mengwei opened the message, started the GPS navigation, and set off.
Though the Mini was compact and stylish, Jiang Mengwei’s driving style was wilder than Ye Xiao had anticipated. She zipped through traffic, overtaking vehicles with precision, taking full advantage of the Mini’s nimbleness.
By the time they arrived at Yun-Xiao’s office building, Ye Xiao’s face had turned pale. The moment she stepped out of the car and breathed in fresh air, it felt like salvation.
“Urgh… Sister… Mengwei… urgh, could you please drive a bit slower next time… urgh…”
Ye Xiao clung to a tree by the roadside, dry heaving. Thankfully, nothing came out.
“I’ve got some motion sickness pills. Do you want one?”
Jiang Mengwei patted Ye Xiao’s back with a chuckle and handed her a blister pack of pills before heading into a convenience store for bottled water.
After swallowing the pill, Ye Xiao finally began to feel better.
“By the way, your company’s located here of all places!”
Jiang Mengwei remarked as they approached the entrance.
“Yeah, so? This was the only building with a 3,000-square-meter flat floor available for lease,” Ye Xiao replied casually.
“Oh, nothing… it’s just that this building belongs to the Li family’s Longhua Group. Since you’re close to Mengyue, maybe they could waive your rent?”
“Waive rent? No thanks… it’s not like I can’t afford it.”
Ye Xiao pouted at the idea. Sure, skipping rent might save hundreds of thousands a year, but the strings attached to such a favor would be enormous. What if Mengyue asked for repayment? It’d be impossible to refuse!
Having seen how money complicates things, Ye Xiao preferred not to muddy relationships unnecessarily.
They stepped into the elevator together and ascended to Yun-Xiao’s floor.
Emerging, they were greeted by the large, striking characters spelling “Yun-Xiao Technology”. The space was meticulously arranged—thanks to Shen Yunchu’s efforts—and even the company logo had been professionally designed, exuding grandeur.
“Excuse me, are you here for a tour or do you have an appointment?”
The receptionist, a cute twin, asked politely.
The twin receptionists weren’t as stunning as Jiang Mengwei or Shen Yunchu, but being twins was undeniably a bonus. Ye Xiao’s mind started wandering into less-than-pure territories.
“Xiao Xiao, how come your own receptionists don’t recognize you?”
Jiang Mengwei teased with a smile.
The twins exchanged glances, their expressions incredulous. Was this adorable little girl really the owner of Yun-Xiao?
They had both played “My World” before. They’d always assumed its creator was either a dashing young adult or at least a middle-aged genius. Who could’ve guessed it was a cute little loli?
“Please wait a moment while we notify Assistant Shen,” one twin said, bowing politely.
Shortly after, Shen Yunchu emerged in an elegant OL outfit. Her face lit up when she saw Ye Xiao, and for a moment, she looked like she was about to throw herself into Ye Xiao’s arms.
These past few days had been exhausting for her as she managed company operations—her first major task from Ye Xiao. She was determined to excel.
But as her gaze shifted to Jiang Mengwei, her mood visibly dampened.
Another beautiful stranger? Was this Ye Xiao’s next conquest? It seemed the “family” was about to grow again.
Though briefly dispirited, Shen Yunchu quickly masked her feelings with a smile.
“Xiao Xiao, you finally came! You haven’t been here even once since we opened. Such a neglectful boss!”
Though she spoke in a chiding tone, she was already clinging to Ye Xiao’s arm, absorbing the much-needed Xiao energy. Her productivity had been flagging without it.
The twins, witnessing Shen Yunchu’s reaction, immediately bowed deeply.
“Hello, President Ye!”
Eager to leave a good impression, they stood at attention as Ye Xiao entered with Jiang Mengwei and Shen Yunchu.
After a round of affectionate banter with Shen Yunchu, the latter turned to Jiang Mengwei, curiosity in her gaze.
“Ye Xiao, who’s this?”
“This is Jiang Mengwei from Binhai University, Sister Mengwei. She has an amazing singing voice, so I decided to sign her and produce an album.”
“An album? But isn’t this a gaming company?”
Shen Yunchu was baffled. Ye Xiao’s plans were always so sudden.
“It’s fine! Starting a new company is super easy anyway!” Ye Xiao waved it off casually.
Jiang Mengwei suddenly felt like she’d boarded a pirate ship. Signing with Ye Xiao really had been a spur-of-the-moment decision.
As they spoke, they reached the office interior. Jiang Mengwei was impressed by everything she saw: the spacious workstations, a freely stocked snack bar, a relaxation area essential for any game studio, a gym, and even a cafeteria.
“This place is more impressive than any company I’ve seen in dramas,” Jiang Mengwei muttered, awestruck.
“Sister Yunchu, do we have any extra space?” Ye Xiao asked.
“We do, but why?”
“We’re signing Sister Mengwei, so of course, we need a professional recording studio!”
“Just a recording studio? Sure, we’ve got room for that. It’d also come in handy for post-production and voiceovers. But Xiao Xiao, why the sudden interest in entertainment? If you register a new company, is Sister Mengwei going to be your only artist?”
“Good point. The floor above is empty, isn’t it? Let’s rent that too!”
