Chapter 69: Social Suicide
Jiang Mengwei had a gentle and graceful temperament, while Li Mengyue was a bit more impatient.
These two beautiful women appearing together in the cafeteria at Binhai University, even sitting at the same table, created a striking scene that captured the attention of many male students who had come to get their lunch.
As for Ye Xiao, she was viewed as more of a “little sister” to the two of them. Though she was also cute and attracted some attention, the majority of gazes were still focused on the two main beauties.
However, today there was something a little unusual.
Normally outgoing, Li Mengyue now seemed to have met her match, becoming unusually shy. She had already finished her casserole, though her appetite wasn’t large to begin with, and she had gotten an extra bowl to share the meal between them.
The two of them ate with such grace that not a single oil stain was left on the table.
Meanwhile, Ye Xiao had taken Jiang Mengwei’s notebook and appeared very focused—though if Li Mengyue didn’t know better, she might actually believe her earnest look. Beneath the table, however, Ye Xiao was clearly up to mischief, with Li Mengyue as her target.
“Sister Jiang, just sitting here and looking at your face fills me with inspiration,” Ye Xiao said with a sly smile.
Jiang Mengwei’s face filled with question marks.
It wasn’t like her face was covered in lyrics or musical notes, and this was the first time anyone had ever said such a thing to her.
At that moment, Ye Xiao reached out and gently took hold of Jiang Mengwei’s hand.
With a pen in one hand and Jiang Mengwei’s hand in the other, Ye Xiao pressed down, leaving a faint white and pink mark on Jiang Mengwei’s delicate skin.
Jiang Mengwei glanced around; plenty of people were watching them, but no one seemed to think there was anything unusual.
The sight of these two girls, one holding the other’s hand, seemed to strike everyone as sweet and heartwarming.
If Ye Xiao had been a boy, though, the entire cafeteria would probably be in an uproar by now.
Although Jiang Mengwei had graduated and was no longer a student—she was now a music teaching assistant and technically a teacher—she still held a place as an untouchable goddess in the hearts of many.
“Xiao Xiao? Could you maybe let go for a bit?” Jiang Mengwei asked, turning to Ye Xiao.
She didn’t know why, but even though they were both girls, there was something oddly thrilling about the way Ye Xiao held her hand.
“Does Sister Jiang not like Xiao Xiao holding your hand?”
Ye Xiao put on a pouty expression, yet mischievously ran her fingers softly over Jiang Mengwei’s hand.
In that instant, Jiang Mengwei’s body went tense, like a hundred butterflies had taken flight in her chest.
Usually, Jiang Mengwei was calm, with a heart tempered by music, and kept her defenses high. But today, with Ye Xiao sitting so close, she couldn’t seem to stay composed.
Ye Xiao continued as if she hadn’t noticed Jiang Mengwei’s flustered state. “Just looking at you, Sister Jiang, fills me with boundless inspiration!”
She said this while scribbling away in the notebook.
Jiang Mengwei took a deep breath, steadied herself, and glanced sideways at Ye Xiao’s notes. She caught phrases like “Fairy Tale Town”, “The Wind Rises”, and “Ninety-Nine” and “Eighty-One“.
With some effort, she twisted her hand free and, with a puzzled look, asked, “Xiao Xiao, just writing down titles—is there really much point? Even if these names seem a bit convincing.”
But what was “Ninety-Nine” and “Eighty-One” even supposed to mean? Did she look like some kind of character from “Journey to the West”?
After listening to Ye Xiao’s “Sunshine“, she completely accepted Ye Xiao’s talent for writing songs, though she figured “Sunshine” probably something Ye Xiao had written in advance and just happened to bring out today.
Jiang Mengwei held back from asking out loud, “Are you pulling my leg here?”
Ye Xiao replied, “Every time I come up with a melody, I think of a title, and writing the title is my way of remembering it.”
“So you’ve come up with this many melodies already? That’s impressive.”
“Heh, I know, I know. I’m pretty amazing, and not just at songwriting~” Ye Xiao replied shamelessly, nodding.
Jiang Mengwei propped her hand under her chin. “Is writing songs usually this easy for composers?”
“There’s a little variation in speed, but it’s probably about the same.”
Ye Xiao then scribbled down “Love Cycle” and “Senbonzakura”, looking very pleased with herself.
“Since we’re set on singing, let’s go big and shake up the entire Chinese music scene!”
Jiang Mengwei half-jokingly responded, “Let’s start by impressing me first, okay, Xiao Xiao? I’m honestly considering signing a contract with you and Yun-Xiao, but at this point, all I see is you spinning stories.”
Ye Xiao cast her a sidelong glance.
Jiang Mengwei had delicate, finely sculpted features, and she was so beautiful that even if her words stung, Ye Xiao couldn’t bring herself to feel upset. What’s more, although Jiang Mengwei’s words could be harsh, her tone was always soft and gentle.
“Don’t worry, Sister Jiang ~ I’m not like those average nobodies out there. Just wait for the moment when every cell in your body trembles and cheers me on.”
“Well, self-confidence is always a good thing,” Jiang Mengwei nodded.
Seeing Ye Xiao’s confident attitude was genuinely uplifting. Even if the songs she wrote today weren’t all top-notch, with “Sunshine” as a foundation, if they made an album, it would surely be a hit.
Many people bought albums not for the artist but for one standout song—this happened all the time.
Across from them, Li Mengyue’s excitement seemed to wane as her shoulders trembled slightly, feeling a strange detachment from everything around her.
Although she’d been sitting with them for a while, her attention had drifted entirely from their conversation, picking up only bits and pieces about “songs” and “albums”.
“Mengyue? Are you okay?”
Jiang Mengwei was the first to notice Li Mengyue’s unusual behavior.
“I… I’m fine…”
Li Mengyue met Jiang Mengwei’s gaze, her face instantly turning bright red.
“Heh~ Sister Jiang, there’s nothing wrong with Sister Mengyue, she’s just a bit too much of a nobody~ A nobody~” Ye Xiao drawled, drawing out her tone with a hint of teasing.
Li Mengyue felt even more embarrassed. Why hadn’t she realized sooner that Ye Xiao was the type who’d never obediently listen and could get away with the most outrageous things?
But when Ye Xiao acted out, it was as if she held a strange power that made Li Mengyue feel she couldn’t resist. It gave her an unexplainable, tickling sensation, and her natural reaction was to go along with Ye Xiao’s actions.
But Ye Xiao was getting too bold.
Li Mengyue didn’t dare to speak up, though—if anyone noticed what was happening, it would be social suicide!
