Chapter 16: The Old Hag Spills The Beans!
“Ye Xiao, what would you like to drink?”
“Well… Miss Su, you don’t come home often, so there’s only black tea. Is that okay?” the maid asked, looking a bit troubled.
“Only black tea?” Su Ruoxue looked at Ye Xiao, silently asking for her opinion.
“Sister Ruoxue, don’t you know to stock up on more drinks when hosting guests? Not even coffee or soda? How very ‘small fry’ of you~,” Ye Xiao teased, shaking her legs playfully while sitting on the sofa.
“Wang Yi, prepare two cups of black tea!” Su Ruoxue’s lips twitched slightly as she gave the order.
“Yes, Miss Su!”
After sending the maid away, Su Ruoxue’s gaze returned to Ye Xiao. Ye Xiao continued swinging her legs, maintaining an innocent little girl act.
Su Ruoxue clearly wanted to ask about her sister and Gu Tingyuan. Ye Xiao had already used the “Female Lead’s Strategy Guide” and now understood Su Ruoxue and Gu Tingyuan’s storyline well.
Half a year ago, when Ye Youran reconnected with Gu Tingyuan, his attitude towards Su Ruoxue gradually grew colder.
At first, he brushed her off with the excuse of being too busy with work, but recently, he didn’t even bother with that.
Ye Xiao glanced at Su Ruoxue with a hint of pity.
[How sad, such a beautiful woman like Sister Ruoxue is being used as a stand-in by that loser Gu Tingyuan for my cheap sister. Stand-in tropes are really toxic!]
The inner voice echoed again, and Su Ruoxue’s brows furrowed. “Stand-in”? What does that mean?
Just then, Ye Xiao felt a cold breeze and shivered.
“Sister Ruoxue, don’t you have heating in here? It’s freezing! Aren’t you cold in those thin clothes?”
Ye Xiao’s voice interrupted Su Ruoxue’s thoughts, and she realized her hands were getting cold from sitting in the room for so long.
If Ye Xiao hadn’t mentioned it, Su Ruoxue wouldn’t have noticed. The weather had been getting colder by the day. She pulled her clothes tighter around her, recalling the early days of her marriage to Gu Tingyuan.
Back then, he would offer his coat without her needing to say anything, wrapping her in his arms and warming her cold hands. But now, she hadn’t seen him in days, left alone in this cold, empty house.
Before, Gu Tingyuan would leave messages or call to explain his absence, but now, the last time he called was two days ago, during the frantic calls before the confrontation.
Su Ruoxue’s heart sank with sorrow. Has he really stopped loving me? Or was Ye Xiao right—did he never love me to begin with? Was I always just a substitute?
“Wow, it’s only four or five degrees, and you’re already shaking like this, Sister Ruoxue? Can’t handle the cold, can you? Truly a Small Fry! Small Fry ❤️ Small Fry ❤️ ~”
Ye Xiao mocked as she pulled several hand warmers from her bag, laying them out in front of Su Ruoxue while arrogantly taunting her.
“Thank you…” Su Ruoxue’s expression soured, but she still thanked Ye Xiao, her gaze softening a bit.
Though Ye Xiao’s words were harsh, her kindness was genuine—something Su Ruoxue hadn’t felt from Gu Tingyuan in a long time.
Not long after, Aunt Wang returned with two steaming cups of black tea, placing them in front of Su Ruoxue and Ye Xiao.
“Miss Su, Miss Ye, your tea.”
“Aunt Wang, with the money I pay you, is it not enough to keep the heating on in the winter?” Su Ruoxue asked.
She paid Aunt Wang 50,000 yuan a month, covering not only her salary but also the villa’s maintenance and utilities.
“Miss Su, you’re hardly ever here, so I thought it’d be good to save a bit…”
Ye Xiao glanced at Aunt Wang, feeling even more sympathy for Su Ruoxue.
[This Aunt Wang is no good either. Not only did she secretly pawn Sister Ruoxue’s jewelry, but now that Sister Ruoxue and that loser Gu are living apart, she’s been secretly feeding my cheap sister information about Sister Ruoxue. Double-crossing for money!]
Hearing Ye Xiao’s inner thoughts, Su Ruoxue’s expression darkened. Aunt Wang had been hired by her mother before her marriage to Gu Tingyuan.
She’d always been the one taking care of Su Ruoxue when she stayed at the villa, and Su Ruoxue had trusted her.
But now, learning that Aunt Wang might have been stealing her jewelry and leaking information to Ye Youran was shocking.
“Aunt Wang, please turn on the heating. It’s too cold in here,” Su Ruoxue said, her tone still polite despite the rising suspicion.
“Miss Su, are you staying here tonight?” Aunt Wang asked.
“What? So if I’m not staying, you’re just not going to turn on the heat? Or is the heating only for your own room?”
“No, no, Miss Su, that’s not what I meant. It’s just, if you’re not staying, it’d be wasteful to turn it on now. With the villa being so big, it wouldn’t warm up quickly anyway. Can’t you just make do with the hand warmers?”
Hearing this, Su Ruoxue’s expression grew even more stern. Clearly, Aunt Wang hadn’t been spending a dime on maintaining the villa over the years, just as Ye Xiao’s inner voice suggested.
“Aunt Wang, please pack your things and leave today. I won’t pursue the matter of theft, but starting tomorrow, you don’t need to come back.”
Su Ruoxue’s voice was cold and firm.
“Miss Su, what do you mean? I’ve worked hard for four years! How can you accuse me of stealing and fire me just like that?” Aunt Wang was in disbelief.
Living in a large villa and earning more in four years than many do in a lifetime, she couldn’t fathom being dismissed so easily.
“You ungrateful hag! Sister Ruoxue was being generous, planning to let you off. But since you don’t know when to quit, don’t blame me!”
Ye Xiao threatened, shaking her phone, which displayed the emergency call screen. Yes, she had called the police. People like Aunt Wang deserved to be dealt with by the law!
“I didn’t steal anything! I was just having the jewelry cleaned!” Aunt Wang protested, though her panic was obvious.
“Hey, I never said what you stole. You just admitted it yourself. Too late to run now!” Ye Xiao scoffed, shaking her head.
[Sister Ruoxue is really pitiful. Aside from her parents, there really isn’t anyone in her life who truly cares about her.]
Su Ruoxue felt a little uncomfortable for a moment when she was pitied by a little girl like Ye Xiao.
Aunt Wang who had been with her for four years and had taken care of her daily life for an entire year turned out to be this kind of person.
“Do you have any evidence to prove that I stole something?”
The old hag spoke and then tried to run towards the villa’s front door.
The truth was already obvious.
“You old crook, you won’t shed tears until you see the coffin! Trying to run now? It’s already too late!”
Ye Xiao gestured to the security cameras in the corner of the room, which had caught everything.
The police took this major case with a loss of nearly one million very seriously. In less than a quarter of an hour, a police car stopped in the villa area.
The panicked old woman was caught red-handed.
