Chapter 120: The Fickle Nature of Favorability
Ye Xiao dialed Su Ruoxue’s number.
The call connected quickly, and Su Ruoxue’s cool voice came through.
“Hello.”
There was none of the emotional outburst that Lu Shiqing or Shen Yunchu had shown—Su Ruoxue sounded very distant.
In truth, back on Christmas Day, it was Su Ruoxue who had discovered some clues and seen the news about a body dredged up from the Binjiang River, which led her to reach out to Ye Xiao.
But she hadn’t expected Ye Xiao to stand her up—and then disappear for over ten days.
This had caused Su Ruoxue’s attitude toward Ye Xiao to plummet to freezing point.
“Su Ruoxue Favorability -10”
“Su Ruoxue Favorability -10”
“Su Ruoxue Favorability -10”
Ye Xiao nearly fainted.
What was going on? Why had Ruoxue-jie’s favorability dropped three times in a row?
She’d finally managed to build it up to 50 points, and now it had fallen back to 30.
All that hard work, all those “physical efforts” she put in—was it all for nothing?
“Well,” the system explained, “because Su Ruoxue’s base favorability toward you was low to begin with, any major event—whether positive or negative—can cause drastic fluctuations.”
“Ruoxue-jie, how have you been lately?”
“Ye Xiao, just say what you need to say.”
“Um… about ten days ago, someone pulled a corpse out of the Binjiang River. You know about that, right?”
“Su Ruoxue Favorability +20”
“Su Ruoxue Favorability +20”
Aha, there it was—the favorability going back up.
She’d assumed that Ye Xiao had contacted her just to play some flirty little game again, like the ones between “sisters” that Ye Xiao seemed fond of.
But now, it turned out Ye Xiao had been seriously investigating Gu Tingyuan during her disappearance.
That smoothed Su Ruoxue’s mood, and Ye Xiao’s voice over the phone sounded much more pleasant to her now.
She didn’t know this “Liao Jin,” but she remembered that night clearly—she had responded to Ye Xiao’s invitation, but Ye Xiao didn’t show up.
The first person she saw instead… was Liao Jin.
Through her own investigation, Su Ruoxue discovered that not only had Liao Jin accepted money from Ye Xiao, but he also received a payment from Gu Tingxuan.
Although the transaction used a foreign anonymous account, the private investigator she hired had captured images of Gu Tingxuan’s men hiring a shady local underground group to do the job.
This group might have even been one of the Gu family’s own assets. Liao Jin was shown receiving a 200,000 yuan transfer on the spot and being told to leave Binhai.
But after taking the money, Liao Jin didn’t leave Binhai at all. Instead, he went partying and splurged in local clubs.
Then he disappeared the next day.
The PI couldn’t find any trace of him leaving the city via train or plane.
On the third day, after possibly digging up something sensitive, the PI—clearly spooked—resigned on their own.
Before leaving, however, they handed over one last clue, Liao Jin’s disappearance was tied to Gu Tingxuan.
Then, on Christmas Eve, Su Ruoxue saw a news report:
A corpse had been fished out of the Binjiang River—identity unknown.
The body’s build was a 90% match for Liao Jin, but due to water-logging and the damage to the limbs, it couldn’t be definitively identified at the time.
That was why Su Ruoxue invited Ye Xiao out that night.
She had told her plainly that there was something very important she needed to discuss—but Ye Xiao didn’t seem to take her seriously at all.
Worse, she treated the meeting like just another casual date.
Even worse—she brought her other “soulmates” along, including Su Ruoxue’s own close friend, Lu Shiqing.
Su Ruoxue wasn’t particularly bothered by that, though. She was already a married woman. Her priority now was finding evidence and taking down the Gu family.
As long as Ye Xiao showed up and they could share some private time in the evening, that was enough.
But Ye Xiao ended up standing all five of them up.
“I’m at the usual spot. I’ll wait for you here.”
Su Ruoxue kept her tone as calm as possible.
Ever since the police released a report confirming the body was indeed Liao Jin, she had been living in fear.
On the surface, Gu Tingxuan seemed like a rich playboy, all indulgence and no bite. But Su Ruoxue knew better—any shady business the Gu family needed done, Gu Tingxuan was the one who handled it.
Even so, up until now, she had never heard of them killing anyone.
At most, there had been cases of violent intimidation.
But now… it was clear: Gu Tingyuan and Gu Tingxuan had hired a killer. If she hadn’t been investigating, she’d still be in the dark.
She was beginning to believe Ye Xiao’s theory—that the one who tried to destroy her innocence wasn’t Ye Xiao, and it wasn’t Ye Youran either.
It was Gu Tingyuan—the man who had always appeared to care for her.
But why? Su Ruoxue couldn’t make sense of it. To the public, Gu Tingyuan had the image of a domineering CEO, a textbook good man.
If someone said he had hired a thug to assault his own wife, and then killed the thug to cover it up after it failed—who would believe that?
If her investigation were exposed, Gu Tingyuan likely wouldn’t show her any mercy just because of their marriage.
Su Ruoxue could now feel it—Gu Tingyuan’s so-called affection for her had been fake from the start. All he ever wanted was to craft an image of being a devoted man.
Now that she thought back to those seemingly affectionate gazes of his… they just made her feel sick.
Even if you don’t love someone, you shouldn’t casually hurt or deceive them.
Gu Tingyuan had never loved Su Ruoxue. He had never even touched her.
—
At 9:30 a.m., Ye Xiao arrived by taxi at the gated community where Su Ruoxue’s private villa was located.
Recalling the path from her last visit, she made her way to the door and rang the bell.
Not long after, Su Ruoxue appeared, peeked around carefully to make sure no one had followed Ye Xiao, and only then let her in.
Ye Xiao couldn’t help but feel a little weird—this felt like some kind of secret agent rendezvous.
She followed Su Ruoxue into the villa.
There were no maids or staff anymore—just a cleaning lady who came by occasionally.
Once bitten, twice shy.
Su Ruoxue had been traumatized by her last housekeeper and wasn’t about to hire another one like that.
Even after that housekeeper was arrested, just a few days later, her daughter’s classmate showed up at the villa claiming that Miss Wang wanted to host a birthday party here.
How absurd—Wang and her daughter had treated this house like it belonged to them.
Even now, the girl didn’t seem to know her own mother was arrested and facing prosecution.
Still, they dared to covet something that was never theirs to begin with.
