Chapter 27: Because Your Character’s Face Is Pretty
“We’re here, Shen Qingxia.”
Back at the entrance of Shen Qingxia’s apartment in the urban village, Su Li spoke softly.
Hearing her words, Shen Qingxia nodded lightly, gave Su Li a deep look, then turned and walked into the building.
Only after Shen Qingxia disappeared into the stairwell did Su Li quietly let out a sigh of relief. Though Shen Qingxia always stared at her with that intense gaze, she hadn’t made any particularly suspicious moves so far.
Which was… strange.
Is she just trying to confirm my identity?
Logically speaking, her disguise had been pretty successful—even Li Yitong hadn’t noticed anything. She doubted Shen Qingxia could see through it…
…Wait, better not jinx it.
Shaking her head slightly, Su Li entered her own building.
Once home, she moved to open the window for some fresh air—only to see Shen Qingxia doing the same across from her.
This feeling of seeing her the moment I open the window is… kind of weird.
After exchanging a small nod with Shen Qingxia, Su Li turned back inside. Ling Luo probably wouldn’t be back for a while yet, so she could use this time to log into the game and grind her pitifully low level.
Just as she was getting absorbed in the game, a knock came at the door. When she opened it, she found Ling Luo standing there with a bright smile.
“Xiao Li, you are back~”
“Yeah, work ran a little late today,” Su Li replied, checking the time.
At that, Ling Luo suddenly hugged her and whined, “Ugh, same here! But what can I do? I’m just a newbie—more work, later hours, it’s all part of the deal~”
The moment Ling Luo embraced her, Su Li’s heart skipped a beat—but she quickly realized Ling Luo was just using the work complaints as an excuse to cop a feel.
“Complaining about work is fine,” Su Li said, putting on her fiercest expression, “but can you not rub your face against mine while doing it?!”
“Can’t help it~ You’re just too cute!” Ling Luo grinned.
Su Li rolled her eyes internally. If she remembered correctly, she was the one who used to pull this move on Ling Luo in the past—and quite often, once they got close.
Who knew she’d turn it back on me one day?
And now, she had no way to avoid it. Infuriating.
Still, Ling Luo was being relatively restrained. Back when she had used this tactic, she’d gone all out. At least Ling Luo was just nuzzling her face—for now.
But then again, didn’t I start with small moves too?
Get them used to the little touches, then escalate to the big ones…
Before Su Li could dwell on it further, Ling Luo suddenly perked up. “Hey, Xiao Li, are you free tomorrow? We just moved here—how about we go out and explore a bit together?”
“Ah… tomorrow’s no good. I already have plans. Sorry.” Su Li put on an appropriately apologetic expression.
“Eh?! Really?”
Disappointment flashed across Ling Luo’s face—but she already had a good guess who Su Li’s plans were with. Most likely, it was Li Yitong, her coworker.
First come, first served. Gotta admit, working together is a huge advantage.
If she were the one working with Su Li, she wouldn’t give any rivals a chance. A few days ago, she wouldn’t have worried much about Su Li going out with Li Yitong.
But now, after learning about Shen Qingxia’s premature appearance, Li Yitong had also become a target of her vigilance.
Her instincts told her Li Yitong was dangerous.
Shaking off her thoughts, Ling Luo smiled. “No worries! We can always go another time~”
“Yeah.”
“I’ll go start dinner then. I’ll call you when it’s ready~”
Only after Ling Luo returned to her own apartment did Su Li finally relax.
I could’ve invited Ling Luo along—let them keep each other in check.
But on second thought, that might backfire. What if they ended up directing all their attention at her instead?
Dealing with one reincarnator was tricky enough. Two at the same time? No thanks.
With a sigh, Su Li lamented the state of this world—where so many people wanted to turn her into their “personal plaything.”
At least video games still offer some warmth.
Returning to her computer, she blinked at the grayscale screen.
Huh? I was just AFK. How did I die?
Do people really get that much joy from ganking low-level players?
…Well, so much for warmth.
Just as she was about to respawn at the nearest checkpoint, a female cleric character came running over. At first, Su Li assumed she was just passing by—but then the cleric stopped right next to her corpse, as if examining it.
Curious, Su Li checked the player’s info.
Name: “HealsFirstThenTalks”
Level: Only two levels higher than hers.
…Very cultured name.
As Su Li wondered what the cleric was up to, the other player suddenly cast a resurrection spell on her.
Su Li froze for a second, then quickly typed:
“Can I ask why you revived me?”
A long pause followed before the cleric replied:
“Because your character’s face is pretty.”
…So she was just admiring my avatar’s looks while I was dead?
What am I supposed to say to that?
After accepting the resurrection, Su Li moved her character closer to inspect the cleric’s face.
Hmm. Not bad. A fellow connoisseur of character customization, I see.
Bonding over their shared appreciation for well-designed avatars, the two naturally struck up a conversation, added each other as friends, and even ended up teaming up for quests.
Everything flowed so smoothly that, if not for the fact that this player didn’t resemble anyone she knew, Su Li might’ve suspected it was yet another person from her past life she’d accidentally charmed.
