Chapter 18: The One Closest Gets The First Moonlight
“Su Li, you’re finally here. I thought you were going to be late—don’t forget the Dean’s doing rounds tonight~”
Walking up to the school gate alongside Shen Qingxia, Su Li was greeted by Li Yitong’s gentle smile. The breeze tugged lightly at her long skirt, lifting the hem ever so slightly, revealing her fair and smooth calves. Just by standing there, Li Yitong had already caught the attention of quite a few students arriving for evening study.
Even Su Li found herself momentarily distracted. But she quickly reeled it in. As beautiful as Li Yitong was, if she ever found out that Su Li was actually a reincarnator, no amount of beauty would make that situation any less dangerous.
She might end up being the one who gets consumed.
After quickly adjusting her expression, Su Li smiled softly. “As a teacher, how could I possibly be late~?”
She tried to say it with full confidence, but to Li Yitong, the look on Su Li’s face made it seem like she’d just accomplished something and was hoping to be praised for it.
For a fleeting moment, Li Yitong couldn’t help but wonder—was this really the same Su Li who once walked down the same path in her previous life? Or had reincarnation truly changed her?
Caught in her thoughts, Li Yitong subconsciously reached out and gently patted Su Li’s head. Her fingers brushed through Su Li’s soft hair, and unexpectedly, a small feeling of joy welled up inside her.
Feeling the hand atop her head, Su Li blinked. What kind of move was this? She, a proper seven-foot-tall man (In spirit), was just head-patted by a girl!?
It felt… odd. But her body didn’t exactly resist either. After a quick calculation, Su Li decisively swatted Li Yitong’s hand away, puffing up her cheeks in protest. “Hmph! Head pats stunt your growth!”
She almost wanted to applaud herself for the performance. Who would believe that this adorable, pouty girl had been a grown man just a few days ago?
Li Yitong didn’t seem to mind her hand being brushed away. She just chuckled softly and said, “Actually, I think your height is just right.”
Su Li’s current stature was such that she’d have to tilt her head slightly to look up into someone’s eyes while hugging them. Even just imagining that scene, Li Yitong found it… strangely charming.
Her words struck Su Li like an arrow to the heart. As if she didn’t already care enough about her height—of course she did. But no matter how much she obsessed over it, there was no going back to her former altitude.
Let alone regaining her past height—she probably wasn’t going to grow any taller at all.
Seemingly reminded of something, Li Yitong turned her eyes toward Shen Qingxia, who stood quietly at Su Li’s side. “You came with Shen Qingxia?”
“Mmm. She lives really close to me—just across the street, actually. I ran into her as soon as I stepped outside. Maybe it’s fate?” Su Li said with a smile.
Though she said that, she didn’t believe it for a second. No way this was fate. This had all the markings of a calculated move by Shen Qingxia.
“Is that so? What a coincidence~”
Under Li Yitong’s gaze, Shen Qingxia didn’t show any particular reaction. She just gave Su Li one last, long look, then nodded politely to Li Yitong and said in a low voice, “Teachers, I’ll head to class now.”
“Go on~”
Li Yitong watched Shen Qingxia’s departing figure, a hint of surprise in her eyes. She hadn’t expected Shen Qingxia to go so far as to move across the street from Su Li—let alone be this proactive.
But considering Su Li’s current condition, maybe taking the initiative was the right move?
Should she get involved too? As a bystander, observing the drama was entertaining enough… but wouldn’t it be even more fun to jump in herself?
After all, this version of Su Li—this adorable, unexpectedly earnest Su Li—made her want to do all sorts of questionable things.
As Su Li walked toward the teaching building, she suddenly felt an ominous chill. She snuck a glance at Li Yitong out of the corner of her eye. Was she… thinking something dangerous?
In any case, better to stay on guard. As long as she didn’t slip up, things should be fine.
With that thought, Su Li plastered her signature cute smile back on and chirped, “Teacher Li—cough, I mean, Yitong. Are we heading straight to the classroom?”
“Let’s stop by the office and grab a book first. Being on duty during evening self-study can get pretty dull. If a student comes to ask something, great—but if not, it gets boring fast.”
“Oh~”
Su Li nodded, her face lighting up in understanding.
Following Li Yitong to the office, Su Li grabbed a textbook, a notebook, and a pen from her desk. Since evening duty could be dull, she figured she might as well use the time to prep lessons.
Seeing the things in Su Li’s hands, Li Yitong chuckled. “You’re really diligent, huh~”
Just like the Su Li from before her rebirth.
A total scumbag in relationships, but strangely responsible when it came to students. She had once asked Su Li why that was.
“Because I’m a teacher. Being responsible for my students is only natural,” he’d replied.
Then she asked, “What about all those female students you dumped? Don’t you owe them responsibility too?”
He didn’t answer that one—he was too busy being dragged off by yet another of his girl-students. What they did after that… she never found out.
Snapping out of her memories, Li Yitong looked once more at the Su Li beside her. The gender had changed, yes, but the personality… not so much.
So even if Su Li wasn’t a reincarnator, would time eventually mold her into the same person again?
And if that’s the case, what would happen if she made her move before Su Li got there?
Maybe… she should give it a try.
Compared to those other reincarnators who hadn’t shown up yet—and whose intentions toward Su Li remained unclear—Li Yitong understood one thing perfectly well:
The one closest to the water gets the moonlight first.
After all, she had lost out once already in her past life because she wasn’t that person.
Just then, Su Li’s voice cut into her thoughts: “Um, shouldn’t we be heading to the classroom now?”
“Mmm. Let’s go.”
