Chapter 94: The Annihilated Town
Feng Rong flew swiftly, his speed vastly different from their previous journey to the ruins. No afterimage could be seen, and his ears roared with the rushing wind. Despite the great distance, his sword control brought them to the destination in under half an hour.
As Feng Rong slowed, You You finally glimpsed the scene below. A stretch of Black Scorched Earth dominated the landscape. Though summer, not a speck of green remained—even the nearby forest had withered to skeletal yellow trees, as if life had vanished instantly.
Dread pooled in her chest.
“Sect Master, that’s Tao Gui Town ahead!” Ling Qi pointed. Feng Rong veered toward it.
The closer they drew, the heavier the silence weighed. A town this large should bustle with noise, yet an unnatural stillness clung to the air. When they soared over the walls, their breath caught.
The ground crawled with Black scorch marks, spiderwebbing across the entire town. Piled atop them lay emaciated figures in fine robes—skeletons draped in silk.
“This…” Ling Qi’s voice shook. The sheer number suggested the whole town’s population lay dead. They landed, and Ling Qi checked for pulses before shaking his head. “Gone. All of them.”
You You stared at the twisted faces frozen in agony. “What happened here?” No battle scars marred the surroundings—just silent death.
“Something drained their vitality instantly.” Feng Rong rose from examining a corpse. “No monster’s stench lingers. This resembles… backlash.”
“Backlash?” What force could backfire so catastrophically? She scanned the area. “Where are Lin Feng and our disciples? Can you sense them?”
Feng Rong closed his eyes briefly before pointing northeast. “Not here. That way.”
They followed the spreading Black marks, thicker now, converging like rivers toward a distant mountain. Beneath its shadow stood a raised platform heaped with corpses—denser than the town’s, central figures grotesquely adorned in gaudy finery.
“A sacrificial altar,” Ling Qi muttered, his Priest’s instincts surfacing. “But what did these ordinary people worship?” No idols or symbols offered clues.
“The Soul Token signals they’re inside that cave.” Feng Rong gestured at a sheer stone wall.
You You frowned. “What cave?”
Feng Rong struck the wall. A formation’s glow flashed before stone shattered, unveiling a gaping Passage. Violent energy billowed out.
“Move!” You You charged in, Feng Rong and Ling Qi at her heels.
The cave plunged downward into suffocating darkness. Feng Rong summoned red flames, illuminating Black veins pulsing with faint light—alive.
A red glow ahead hinted at formations when Liu Qing’s voice rang out: “Stay back! You think we won’t strike ordinary people?!”
“Liu Qing!” You You exclaimed.
“Sect Master?!” Shock colored her disciple’s reply. “Don’t approach! Deadly formations ahead!”
Other disciples echoed warnings. You You halted as Feng Rong yanked her back. “Multi-layered formations, partly decayed. Breakable.” He shouted inward, “Stay grouped!”
Red flames spiraled from his hands, searing the ground. Complex formations materialized, layers disintegrating under fire until the barrier fell, exposing haggard disciples.
“Sect Master!” They bowed weakly, many leaning on comrades. Though unharmed outwardly, their spiritual energy churned chaotically, Cultivation weakened.
“What happened?” You You demanded.
Liu Qing leaned on her sword. “A trap. No monsters plagued Tao Gui Town—they lured us here. Formations drained our spiritual energy. They used our messaging talismans to bait more disciples.”
You You’s face hardened. “Why?”
“To steal our spiritual power!”
