Chapter 6: Truly Good People
You You felt completely off. The short two-mile walk into the city turned into a red carpet spectacle, with swarming crowds growing thicker by the second. The raw hunger in their stares made her hairs stand up like tiny sensors.
Crime documentary flashes flooded her mind. Yeah, she was officially freaked out!
Scanning the packed streets, she finally noticed the weirdness – every gawker was male. Not a single woman in sight. Were females this rare here?
"Back off!" Lin Feng barked as the path clogged. His long sword hissed from its sheath, sharp sword energy shoving the front row backward. Murderous intent rolled off him like fog.
The team closed ranks around You You, eyes darting. The crowd froze mid-press, still eyeing her like dessert but grudgingly parting.
They inched forward. You You mentally high-fived them, tension easing. Last night’s plan resurfaced – they’d take her to the lord’s mansion, the local authority hub. Lin Feng claimed the city lord would trace her origins and ship her home.
Home? Fat chance. This wasn’t even her world. But right now, escaping this creep-fest topped her list. Staying felt like volunteering for true crime podcast material.
She was rehearsing her official speech when reality sucker-punched them. The lord’s mansion stood abandoned, door groaning open to reveal ransacked chaos.
Even Lin Feng’s crew blinked in confusion.
The tailgating mob erupted:
"Lord’s gone! Ran off two days back when the sudden beast wave hit – said he’d alert the immortal sect!"
"Bailed so fast he left cobwebs! Won’t return for months!"
"Thank the immortal sect’s protective barrier or we’d be beast chow!"
"Need help escorting her, Lin Feng? We’ll do it!"
"Pfft! Our border city Team could bench-press the lord’s guards!"
The shouting match escalated toward brawl territory until Liu Qing drop-kicked the loudmouth. "Scram!" she roared. "Our Team’s got this! Think our boss is chopped liver?"
The mob retreated, cowed.
Liu Qing shot Lin Feng a look. "Boss?"
"Squad up at the safehouse," he ordered, sword grip tightening.
They booked it to a walled compound in west district. The moment the door slammed, You You’s goosebumps faded – though shuffling feet outside confirmed her fan club wasn’t leaving.
Wolf den. That’s what this was. The forest’s dangers seemed quaint now.
Her earlier observation crystallized – she was the only woman here. This sausage-fest ratio screamed "future kidnapping victim" louder than tabloid headlines.
Nope. Every instinct said bail. This town was a predator’s playground.
Dark thoughts swirled until she mentally poked her game system. Right. Transmigrator with cheat codes here. Panic button engaged.
Although most of the System’s functions were unusable—especially the skills section that gave no feedback no matter how hard she poked—You You had clearly felt her stamina and speed leap forward during their earlier escape. If real danger came, fleeing shouldn’t be a problem.
The question was… where to flee?
A map visible only to her materialized instantly. She stared hopelessly at the small city engulfed by endless green. What kind of World was this? Forests stretched endlessly, and even at maximum zoom, no shadow of another city appeared.
Leaving meant two outcomes: starve on the road or become Monster chow.
A wave of unfamiliar panic hit. What now? Were they doomed?
"You… Miss You, why not sit and rest?" Liu Qing approached, cheeks flushed as she pointed to an obsessively polished chair that clashed with its dusty surroundings. "Lunch will take a bit longer."
You You blinked, warmth easing her anxiety. "Thanks." However odd the cityfolk acted, Liu Qing’s group were genuine good souls.
"It’s nothing!" Liu Qing scratched her head sheepishly. "We’re still tidying up. Want snacks? Pastries? Fruits? I’ll grab some!"
"No, really!" You You waved her hands. Sitting idle while others worked was bad enough—snacking would feel downright shameless!
"Don’t hold back!" A dust-covered man chimed in, arm raised. "There’s this amazing osmanthus cake place—"
Before she could protest, he bolted out like a gust of wind.
You You: "…"
Their relentless kindness might give her a heart attack one day.
"Miss You." A low voice interrupted.
She turned to see a man in dark robes behind her—sharp-eyed, broad-shouldered, exuding intensity like an unsheathed sword, though his brow furrowed with unspoken worries.
Among grubby laborers, this clean-cut standout made her stare. "Lin Feng?!"
Was this the same man? His polished appearance contrasted wildly with before. Only his voice gave him away.
Lin Feng’s lips twitched. "Just ‘Lin Feng’ is fine. No need for formal titles."
"Heh." She awkwardly chuckled. Force of habit.
He sat beside her, pouring tea casually. "Have you considered your plans?"
You You accepted the cup, sensing a farewell talk. These people had guided her through the forest—more than enough kindness. Time to move on.
"Not yet." She gulped tea, debating asking for directions.
"Then… may I suggest something?" He relaxed slightly.
"Hmm?"
"The border city isn’t safe, especially for women." His frown deepened. "We’re near the Abyss of the Demons. Most here are Monster hunters or criminals. Your arrival here… it can’t be coincidence. Staying risks danger."
"I know."
"Go to Shangyang City." He unfolded a map. "Unlike this place, it’s massive—a hundred miles from Fengtian Kingdom’s capital. Rumors say immortal clans reside there. Safest choice."
"Shangyang City?" Her eyes lit. "Far?"
"North of here. A month, maybe two."
"Two months?!" Modern-life You You balked at marathon journeys.
"Distance aside, it’s wisest." Mistaking her shock for refusal, he added, "Once past the border, we’ll reach the official road—Monster-free and secure."
You You squinted at the cryptic map (even the System made more sense) before nodding. "Let’s go."
Lin Feng exhaled, smile breaking through. "We’ll pack tonight. Depart at dawn."
"Wait—‘we’? You’re coming?!"
He stiffened. "We’re skilled Monster hunters—top fighters here. We’ll protect you."
"No! I trust you!" She waved frantically. "But you’ve done enough! Why escort me further?"
Lin Feng looked offended. "No honorable person would abandon a woman to travel alone."
Realization dawned. They’d never planned to ditch her. Her eyes misted—what saintly luck!
"Thanks, bro!" She thumped his shoulder. "You’re family now!"
"Merely our duty."
"Last question."
"Ask."
"Your Team’s rates… Take IOUs?" Broke as heck, she grinned.
Lin Feng: "…"
Liu Qing: "…"
All: "…"
