Chapter 50: The Runaway Beast
“There’s more, there’s more…” Wen Ze’s tail wagged wildly as he eagerly boasted, “I cleared the floating rocks around here, purified the mountain spring at the Peak, brought over three hundred people to the floating peak, and scared off four flocks of birds…”
“Great job! You’re awesome!”
“So when will you make my fur grow back?” His eyes widened, brimming with hope.
“Uh…” You You hesitated, scratching her head. “Well… it’s complicated…”
“You’re breaking your promise?!” Wen Ze bristled, his few remaining tufts of fur standing straight up.
“No! It’s just… really hard. I haven’t figured it out yet…” You You sighed. She’d meant her promise, but how could she know “baldness” was an incurable problem across the Three Realms? Even the Yuan Family’s top healers called it a hopeless condition.
“But you read ALL those books!” Wen Ze stared at the mountain of texts behind her, trembling. “Liar! You promised! Liar liar pants on fire! I hate you! Waaah!”
With that, he shot into the sky like a furry comet, leaving tear trails in his wake.
You You: “……”
Was this a guardian beast or a toddler?
“Noble Lady, Wen Ze might—” Ling Qi began.
“I know.” You You cut him off. “I’ll get Feng Rong. His cultivation level’s high enough to track a sulking fluffball.”
The sect was busy rebuilding anyway. Though this was her fault—Wen Ze’s meltdown made sense. Still, letting a high-level guardian beast roam freely? Bad idea.
She found Feng Rong criticizing construction techniques while magically reinforcing walls. At her request, he scoffed. “Now you need me? Thought you didn’t trust my advice!”
“……” He was still salty about the cultivation secrets thing? She didn’t even HAVE secrets!
Before she could explain, he snapped, “Stop dawdling! Your little monster went east. Hurry before it gets eaten!”
“……” Never mind. He’d moved on.
Feng Rong summoned a translucent Spirit Sword. You You hopped on, grabbing his waist for balance.
“What are you—?!” He jerked sideways, making her crash into his chest.
He froze, face burning crimson. “Y-You You!”
“Quit squirming!” She rubbed her forehead. “I can’t sword control yet! You’re my ride!”
Glowering, he turned away, ears red. “Hmph! Master of formations but can’t even fly a sword? Hold on. I won’t fish you out of a river.”
The sword lurched upward. You You clung tighter, eyes shut against the rushing wind.
Noticing her white-knuckled grip, Feng Rong slowed. His hand hovered behind her, finally settling lightly on her back.
(Not that he cared! He just didn’t want his sword scratched!)
╭(╯^╰)╮
They landed in the forest where Feng Rong cast a tracking spell. After thirty minutes, they found an ancient tree with a wide hollow. Outside lay a featherless, battered bird monster—clearly evicted recently.
Inside the hollow, a bald white ball sulked, tail poking out.
“Wen Ze…” You You knocked the trunk. “C’mon out. I’m sorry about the fur thing. We’ll keep searching, okay? Maybe someday—”
“Liar!” came the muffled wail. “I’m staying here forever! Better bald than laughed at!”
“Who’d laugh? The Sect thinks you’re naturally hairless!”
“THAT bird did!” Wen Ze sniffled. “Called me shiny egghead!”
You You glanced at the plucked bird monster twitching nearby. Yeah, pretty sure the victim here wasn’t Wen Ze.
“Enough chatter.” Feng Rong raised a hand. A spell blast obliterated the tree, revealing the teary beast.
Wen Ze’s neck flames ignited. “BULLY! I’LL CHOMP YOU!”
“Try.” Feng Rong’s voice dropped.
An invisible Presence crashed down. Wen Ze flattened, trembling like jelly.
This… this aura was TERRIFYING!
