Chapter 38: Breaking Up
You You felt her anger boiling over. Since arriving in this world—whether chased by beast waves, manipulated by Xun Rong, or having her business snatched by the Wu Family—she’d never been this furious. But every word from that steward stabbed at her rawest nerves.
What did it matter if they were ordinary people or strange people? These were her brothers! The ones who’d supported her since her arrival, protected her, treated her with utmost care, and even risked their lives for her. She’d gladly call them her leaders! Yet some random nobody dared drive them away?
By what right?!
“Celestial Maiden…” The steward froze, shocked by You You’s sudden appearance and the crushing aura radiating from her. His legs buckled, knees hitting the floor.
“Who are you to expel Lin Feng and his men?” You You demanded through gritted teeth.
The steward trembled, sweat dripping down his neck. “I…I’m the Ji Family’s steward.”
“The Ji Family?” One of the three prominent families she’d selected. She recalled this man standing behind the Ji Family head during their meeting. Her rage flared hotter. “This was the Ji Family’s idea?”
“N-not just them! All three family heads agreed!” Blurting this out, he hastily added, “They acted for your sake, Celestial Maiden!”
“For me?” So she should thank them for betraying her allies? You You’s knuckles whitened as she turned to Ling Qi. “Fetch the Ji, Jian, and Yu Family heads. Now.”
“At once!” Ling Qi bowed and vanished.
Lin Feng’s face palmed. “Celestial Maiden, we actually volun—”
“Not. Another. Word.” You You’s glare silenced him. With a flick of her wrist, the group found themselves mute. She marched them back to the floating peak’s main hall without speaking, her stormcloud expression warning against any protests.
When the three family heads arrived, they found You You seated like a thundercloud on the dais, Lin Feng’s group frozen like statues below.
The Ji Family head bowed. “Why summon us so urgently, Celestial Maiden?”
“You tried to kick Lin Feng’s group out of Cheng Tian Pavilion.” You You’s voice could freeze magma. “Explain.”
The Ji Family head glanced at the immobilized men. “Their origins are…unsuitable. Ordinary people? A strange person? No respectable sect on the Immortal Blessing Continent accepts such disciples. Keeping them tarnishes your standing.”
“‘My’ disciples,” You You stressed. “Since when do you decide who stays in my sect?”
“You misunderstand,” the Jian Family head cut in. “Proper sects grant spiritual roots to kin first. You gave yours to riffraff during that crisis. Other sects will mock you for this!”
“Mock me?” You You barked a laugh. “You mean I should’ve abandoned loyal brothers to please gossips?”
The Yu Family head spread his hands. “A sect’s reputation matters. Keep these lowlifes, and no one will take your immortal sect seriously. We’re trying to protect you.”
“Protect me?” You You’s voice dropped dangerously. “By dictating who I call family?”
The Jian Family head snorted. “You’re young. Building a first-rate immortal sect requires sacrifices. Discard the trash, focus on proper candidates like us. Or perhaps we’ll reconsider serving you.”
All three nodded, smugness oozing. They’d assumed their wealth and status made them irreplaceable.
You You’s anger evaporated, replaced by icy clarity. “You’re right. Choosing relatives requires care.” She stood, gaze piercing. “We’re clearly incompatible. Leave.”
The color drained from their faces. “Y-you’d choose these vermin over us?!” the Ji Family head spluttered.
“They’re my brothers. If I can’t protect them, what sect is worth building?” She waved toward the exit. “Go find another ‘noble lady’ to leech onto.”
“You’ll regret this!” The Jian Family head stormed out, others trailing angrily.
“Wait.” You You’s voice halted them. As they turned hopefully, she smirked. “Take your trash with you.”
A hurricane-force gust blasted through the hall. The steward and family heads yelped as they tumbled out, skidding across the main peak’s stones.
Gaping at the distant floating peak, the Ji Family head whispered, “That power…is this a newborn celestial maiden’s magic?”
