Chapter 37: The Celestial Maiden’s Brother
Long Xi seemed stunned by her directness, taking a long moment to collect himself before lowering his head in thought, as if seriously considering her proposal. Though her words were blunt and contained unfamiliar terms, he grasped most of her meaning—it was all undeniably true.
The Wu Family’s inherent strength gave them an edge, placing them far ahead of You You from the start. Yet this very advantage could become an obstacle for the Long Family. Since the celestial maiden originated from the Wu Family, their alliance was unbreakable. Even if she were selecting relatives, the Wu Family already stood as the largest existing kin.
“I heard, Noble Lady, that you already had disciples before entering the pavilion—those you took in during your trials in the Mortal Realm?” he finally asked after a lengthy silence, his voice grave.
“You mean Lin Feng and the others?” You You tilted her head, puzzled, but nodded. “Yes.”
“To you, what are these disciples…?”
“Brothers!” she answered without hesitation. What else could comrades who’d faced life and death together be?
Long Xi froze, visibly startled by her reply. Slowly, a bright smile spread across his face as he studied her intently. “Noble Lady… you truly are unlike any other celestial maiden.”
“…” What did that mean? Was he agreeing or not?
Long Xi quickly resumed his polite demeanor. “Thank you for your honesty. However, this matter concerns my entire clan. I must consult my elders and deliberate carefully.” A faint crease formed between his brows.
“Understood.” You You knew this wasn’t a decision to be made lightly.
After exchanging brief pleasantries, Long Xi took his leave. She walked him to the door out of courtesy, which appeared to genuinely surprise him. Though his smile seemed more sincere, the worry in his eyes deepened.
Watching him depart like a parting shareholder, You You turned to reenter—only to freeze at a sneering voice from nearby.
“Keep staring. He still won’t pick you!”
Xun Rong leaned against a stone pillar, his stunning features twisted with resentment. Gone was his earlier fragile act; now he radiated arrogance.
“Xun Rong!” You You blinked. “Where’ve you been?” Since his sudden disappearance at the ruins, she’d worried something happened to him.
“Why shouldn’t I be here?” He glared, ignoring her question. “The celestial maiden’s choosing relatives—of course I’d come to try my luck.”
“Relatives?” She turned to Ling Qi. “Is he from a prominent family too?” Wasn’t his “young master” persona fake?
Ling Qi shook his head—too many families had come to Cheng Tian Pavilion. “Which family do you represent, young master?”
“You’ll learn soon enough.” Xun Rong dismissed Ling Qi with a glance, stepping closer to You You. “Face it—Long Xi’s useless to you. Even if he wanted to be your Follower, his clan would never allow it.”
Before she could respond, Ling Qi cut in, “The Long Family head hasn’t decided yet. Don’t presume.”
“Presume?” Xun Rong’s eyes narrowed. “Even if Long Xi agreed, his clansmen wouldn’t. Choosing relatives concerns whole families—not individuals.”
You You sighed. She’d known this from the start, but had to try anyway.
“Why not pick me instead?” Xun Rong’s voice turned silky as he leaned in, exuding calculated charm. “Beg nicely, and I might help save your dignity.”
You You pushed his forehead back with a finger. “Pass.” She headed for the side hall—trusting this schemer would be idiocy.
Xun Rong’s face darkened. “That look—you mocking me?!” He stormed after her. “I’m not some charity case you can—”
“Move. I need to find someone.” She shoved past him.
Staggering, Xun Rong erupted like an angry chick. “You dare ignore me?! Do you even know who I—”
“Where are they?” You You whirled around. “Xun Rong—did you see Lin Feng and Yin Fan outside?”
He froze, then smirked. “Oh, now you care?”
Her stomach dropped. “What happened?”
“Did you think your new relatives would let you keep mingling with commoners and strange people?” He sneered. “They’re protecting your precious reputation.”
“What?” Ling Qi’s face tightened beside her.
“Saw them heading to the mountain gate earlier.” Xun Rong’s grin turned vicious. “Want to guess who sent them away?”
You You vanished before he finished speaking.
Panic sharpened her senses—her vision expanded suddenly, revealing the entire Cheng Tian Pavilion. She found them instantly: Lin Feng’s group at the mountain gate, confronted by a steward from one of the families. The man’s icy words carried clearly:
“Know your place! Commoners are bad enough, but strange people? Your filthy existence shames the celestial maiden! Be grateful we don’t demand your lives for staining her name. Leave now before you make her the continent’s laughingstock!”
Lin Feng and Yin Fan stayed silent, but Liu Qing stepped forward desperately.
“We just… wanted to say goodbye!” she pleaded. “If we can’t… that’s fine!”
The steward snorted. “You think the Noble Lady has time for vermin? Her granting you spiritual roots was mercy enough. Every second you stay damages her—”
“Says who?” You You materialized mid-sentence.
