Chapter 28: Monsters Battling Monsters
Lin Feng’s group hadn’t gone far—just a few hundred meters—when they saw the monsters. Not one, but two. Each stood three meters tall with bull-like bodies lacking horns. Rows of sharp tooth-like spines ran along their backs, while flames burned from their hooves, leaving wildfire trails wherever they stepped. Their leopard-like heads sported long tusks as they emitted low growls.
Both fifth-level monsters were restrained by a formation’s red light, thrashing violently. Before them stood over a dozen people. Two middle-aged figures—a man and woman at the center—struggled to maintain the formation. All bore injuries, faces twisted in pain. The ground nearby lay scattered with fallen comrades: some gravely wounded, others motionless.
The inner energy-powered formation couldn’t contain two fifth-level monsters. As the structure neared collapse, Lin Feng’s eyes reddened. "Father! Mother!" He rushed forward recklessly.
"Feng’er!" The woman at the center recognized him instantly. Others stared in shock. "How did you—"
"I’ll explain later!" Lin Feng cut in, taking his parents’ place in the formation. Spiritual energy surged from him, reinforcing the crumbling structure. The monsters’ violent struggles subsided momentarily under the renewed suppression.
His parents retreated without question, helping others withdraw while Lin Feng’s teammates assisted the injured Lin family members. As a cultivator, Lin Feng’s spiritual energy boosted the formation tenfold. Yet against two Foundation Building-level monsters, this advantage wouldn’t last.
You You observed Lin Feng’s strain and tapped her shoulder bag. "Wake up, little monster!"
A hairless dog-sized creature emerged, snapping, "I’m Wen Ze!"
"Then help us, Wen Ze." She pointed at the monsters. "You can handle fifth-level pests, right?"
"Easy!" The beast scoffed, then tried retreating into the bag. "But why should I?"
You You clenched her fist. "Help them or face me. Choose."
Wen Ze shuddered, fur shedding as he growled, "Fine!" He leapt out, transforming mid-air. His original body swelled beyond the monsters’ size, smooth fur replaced by whip-like vines. A thunderous roar silenced the beasts as vine tendrils lashed out, pummeling them into submission.
Within moments, the enraged monsters lay trussed like zongzi. When their continued snarling annoyed him, Wen Ze knocked them unconscious with casual slaps.
"Done!" Shrinking back to dog size, Wen Ze dove into the bag and sealed it tightly.
"Noble Lady." Lin Feng approached, his spiritual presence stable thanks to timely aid.
You You gestured at the wounded. "Save the thanks. Get everyone to safety first."
"The Lin estate’s ahead." Lin Feng directed the group to carry the injured away from the scorched battlefield.
The Lin family had suffered heavy casualties. To hold off the fifth-level monster, they’d mobilized almost their entire clan, only to lose over half their members. Even Lin Feng’s parents had been injured to varying degrees, while his two younger brothers remained unconscious after protecting them, their fates unknown.
Lin Feng felt cold dread creep through him. Had they arrived moments later, his family might have been wiped out completely.
"Feng’er! We never thought you’d return!" Lin’s mother clutched his arms, examining him urgently. "Where have you been all these years? How… how did you become a cultivator?"
"Father! Mother! That can wait. Why was there a fifth-level monster in the city? And why was our family the only ones fighting?" Though the Lin family ranked among Shangyang City’s top prominent families, other powerful clans should have participated. "Where were the Wangs, Xus, and Lis?"
Lin Feng’s parents exchanged a look, their faces full of sorrow. "We don’t know. The Xu family sent word about monsters in the city, begging for aid. When we arrived, we found a fifth-level beast… and only us confronting it."
"The Xu family again!" Lin Feng’s fists shook with barely contained rage. "No wonder Xu Shouyi tried blocking our entry into the city!"
The Lin family members paled. The Xu clan being nearby yet refusing to help – even hindering rescuers – could only mean one thing. This had been a scheme from the start, designed to drain the Lin family’s strength until monsters destroyed them.
"Bastards!" Lin’s father roared. "Do they treat human lives as jokes?"
"If they cared about lives, they wouldn’t dare this!" Yin Fan sneered. "They knew you’d never abandon the city, so set this obvious trap. They kept people in the city without helping, waiting for your clan’s destruction before claiming both credit and rewards. With no survivors, who’d challenge their story?"
"This goes too far!" Lin Feng turned scarlet, storming toward the door.
"Feng’er!" His mother seized his arm.
"I’ll make Xu Shouyi answer for this!" The young man trembled with fury. "The Xu family vowed to leave us alone if I left Shangyang City!"
"What good would confronting them do now?" His father gripped his shoulder. "Greed overrides oaths. Focus on healing our wounded instead!"
Lin Feng froze, remembering his blood-soaked brothers and injured clansmen. Monster-inflicted wounds weren’t easy to treat.
"Maybe…" A soft voice interrupted. "Let me try?"
The tense atmosphere shattered as everyone turned to You You sitting quietly nearby.
Lin’s father jolted as if waking. "We haven’t properly thanked this immortal cultivator! We owe her our lives."
Other Lin family members hastily bowed in gratitude.
Lin’s mother smiled warmly, noting her son’s protective stance. "This cultivator must be your fellow disciple? Is she your senior sister or…"
"Mother!" Lin Feng cut in urgently. "She’s not a female cultivator! I haven’t joined any immortal sect!"
"But…" His mother blinked at the powerful guardian beasts nearby. "Then how…"
"She’s the celestial maiden!"
Lin’s mother: "…"
Lin’s father: "…"
Everyone: "…"
Silence.
Thuds echoed through the hall as dozens of knees hit the floor.

What… did they just hear? Why were their legs moving on their own?
