Chapter 25: The Bald Little Monster
As everyone rushed over, they discovered Lin Feng’s condition wasn’t as severe as it appeared. Though blackened by lightning strikes, his injuries looked better than the wounds from the earlier monster attack. Mysterious energies flowed into his body, visibly healing his wounds. He seemed trapped in an enigmatic illusion, sitting cross-legged with eyes shut tight.
You You initially considered using the Revitalizing Technique again, but seeing his recovery progress, she held back – partly fearing another heavenly lightning strike might worsen things.
"What’s wrong with the boss…" Liu Qing eyed the charcoal-like figure anxiously. "Should we wake him?"
"His wounds are healing," You You replied. "Let’s wait without disturbing him."
"Oh, okay." Liu Qing nodded, then suddenly paled. Her legs buckled as she knelt again, stammering, "Y-yes… yes!"
"…" This again?!
"Celestial maiden." Yin Fan clasped hands respectfully while gesturing ahead. "How should we handle that monster?"
Monster? You You finally remembered the bald little monster. Turning, she saw the dog-sized creature still crammed headfirst into a pit, desperately trying to bury itself.
She grabbed its scruff and yanked it out. The little monster froze before going limp, eyes closed with tongue lolling out.
Hah! Playing dead!
You You smirked, patting its hairless belly. "Dead things shouldn’t go to waste. Let’s scrub it clean and make stew!"
"Awoo!" The creature instantly thrashed its stubby legs. "No! Don’t eat me!"
"Holy crap!" You You nearly dropped it. "You talk?!"
The monster’s childlike voice rose in a deafening wail. "Waaah! Humans beat me… want to eat me! All cultivators are evil!"
You You held it at arm’s length from the noise.
"You kick beasts, hit beasts… worst humans ever! Waaah!" Tears waterfalled from its tiny body, drenching You You’s sleeve as snotty hiccups punctuated the wailing.
You You suddenly felt like a playground bully.
"Would I have hit you if you hadn’t attacked people?"
"Awooo… meat-eater! Villain!"
"Fine! We won’t eat you. Now hush!"
"No! I’ll cry louder! Waaah! Meanest human!"
"Quiet! We’ve got an injured person here!"
"No! Sad beast needs to cry—"
"Shut it or I’ll flick your snout!"
*Hic!* Instant silence.
Fists solve everything.
"Yin Fan, recognize this monster type?" You You asked.
"Just Yin Fan, celestial maiden." He bowed nervously before studying the creature. "Speech indicates at least an eighth-grade monster."
"Not monster!" The creature glared weakly. "I’m guardian beast! Holy protector! Not filthy monster!"
"Guardian beast?!" New terminology indeed.
Yin Fan’s eyes sparkled. "Immortal sects sometimes raise special beasts. Through Contracts, they cultivate alongside masters. Those are guardian beasts!"
“Oh…” She realized this was a pet companion! “So, do you have a master?”
“None…” The little monster’s ears drooped. If it had a master, it wouldn’t have been bullied so badly. The more it thought, the sadder it grew, sniffling pitifully, “I’ve lived in the ruins since I was born. If you hadn’t destroyed my home, I wouldn’t have charged out… and then you attacked me!”
“Uh…” It did seem they’d gone too far.
You You felt a pang of guilt. But the ruins were already destroyed, and letting it roam free was too risky. Who knew if this guardian beast ate humans? Though it seemed harmless now, its tentacle—formed from the mane around its neck—had nearly killed Lin Feng earlier. She couldn’t endanger her teammates.
Killing it wasn’t an option, nor was releasing it. You You was stuck.
“If the celestial maiden wishes to spare it yet fears it’ll harm others, why not form a Contract to make it a guardian beast?” Yin Fan suggested. “The Contract’s bindings will force it to obey you.”
“You want me to take it in?”
“Yes.” Yin Fan nodded, gazing at her with reverence.
“Who wants to be her—” The little monster started to protest but abruptly froze. Its eyes darted craftily before it nodded eagerly. “Okay! I’ll be your guardian beast! I’m easy to care for!”
You You missed its strange reaction. The real problem was… she didn’t know how to form Contracts!
Though she had a “Binding Technique” among her skills, it lacked a dedicated button since it was rarely used—she’d always clicked it with the mouse.
No button meant no skill targeting. No targeting meant failed activation. Failed activation meant no capture!
Total system crash!
Wait… dedicated?
She vaguely recalled setting voice commands for rarely used skills. Maybe saying the preset phrase would work?
“I’m… not great with Contract spells.” You You glanced at Yin Fan’s trusting face and her teammates’ hopeful stares. Gritting her teeth, she said, “I’ll try!”
“Hurry! Contract me!” The little monster tapped its bald forehead impatiently, eyes gleaming.
You You hesitated, then set it down. Pressing her hand to its forehead, she took a deep breath and shouted the skill phrase:
“Grandson! Grandpa’s here to collect you!”
Yin Fan: “…”
Liu Qing: “…”
Teammates: “…”
Silence fell.
( ̄△ ̄;)
The celestial maiden’s spell chants were always… unique.
A White formation flared beneath the little monster. Spiritual energy surged, flooding into it.
Success! It actually worked!
But the little monster began expanding rapidly, reverting to its mountain-sized form.
“Fools!” It laughed, shedding its earlier timidity. Murderous Intent radiated from its towering frame. “The Contract formation amplifies spiritual energy! My power is restored!”
It raised a claw to crush them. “Die, Human Race—Awoo~!”
You You slapped it mid-roar. “Stop squirming!” Couldn’t it see the skill wasn’t done?
BOOM! The little monster faceplanted into the ground, lodged too deep to extract.
Yin Fan: “…”
Teammates: “…”
Little monster: “…”
(⊙_⊙)
The celestial maiden truly operated on another level.
