Chapter 24: The Promised Benefit
"Liu Qing, what’s this about? Get up…" You You instinctively reached to help.
Liu Qing recoiled fearfully, scooting backward on her knees. "No, no… celestial maiden, I couldn’t possibly!" She pressed her forehead to the ground.
"…"
The only standing figure, Xun Rong, finally snapped from his daze. "You… you’re actually the celestial maiden!" he breathed, eyes wide.
"What’s a celestial maiden?"
Xun Rong opened his mouth to explain, then froze. His hands began flickering like candlelight, body dissolving into transparency.
"Holy crap! What’s happening?!"
"Out of time," Xun Rong muttered, form blurring rapidly. He lunged desperately, fingertips grazing her sleeve. "Remember – I’m from Wushan…"
Poof. He vanished like popped soap bubbles.
You You gaped at the empty space, then turned to Lin Feng. The man frowned thoughtfully before answering, "Likely spellcasting, Noble Lady. He’s left this place."
"Right." She shifted uncomfortably, eyeing the sea of prostrated bodies. "Guys? Let’s stand up like normal people, yeah? We’re brothers here!"
The word made them flinch. Foreheads thumped against dirt as they chanted in unison: "We dare not!"
"We’ve shown unforgivable disrespect," Lin Feng declared, nose nearly scraping the ground. "Sharing meals! Sharing water!"
"I drank from your flask!" wailed a teammate. "A thousand deaths couldn’t atone!"
"I didn’t even purify myself before speaking to you!" another moaned.
You You reached to haul someone up. The entire group crab-walked backward on knees, maintaining five-foot clearance.
"Will someone explain?" she demanded. "What’s this celestial maiden nonsense?"
They exchanged glances. "The celestial maiden is existence’s pinnacle," someone offered helpfully.
Lin Feng cleared his throat. "You’ve forgotten, but you’re heaven’s gift to the Mortal Realm. Only you can awaken spiritual roots." He touched his chest reverently. "Your Revitalizing Technique didn’t just heal me – it birthed my cultivation path."
"Wait, you’re a cultivator now? From my first aid spell?"
"Not just healing." Lin Feng’s eyes shone moon-bright. "Cleansed meridians. Regrown bones. Spiritual roots unfolding even now." He pressed palms to earth. "This life is yours. I’ll crush your enemies until my last breath."
Teammates gazed with naked envy, as if he’d won heaven’s lottery.
"Whoa, dial it back!" Heat crept up her neck. "You sure about this? Maybe I sneezed weird?"
"Certain." Lin Feng’s jaw set. "Feel the roots growing…" He stiffened mid-sentence, head snapping upward.
Thunder growled overhead. The sunny field plunged into twilight as inkblot clouds smothered the sky.
"Lightning tribulation!" Lin Feng barked. "Get her clear!"
Teammates scrambled up, dancing around You You like nervous hens. With an exasperated sigh, she grabbed two collars. "Move!"
They’d barely cleared the area when white fire split the sky. Where they’d stood became smoking charcoal. Bolt after bolt hammered down, each strike shaking the earth.
You You counted seconds between strikes. "What’s the voltage here?!" she muttered, recalling high school physics. "How’s he not extra-crispy?"
"Tribulation lightning strengthens spiritual roots," Yin Fan offered uncertainly. "Supposedly… harmless?"
As clouds parted, sunlight revealed their answer: A human-shaped charcoal briquette lay steaming in the crater, faint moans rising from cracked lips.
You You: "…"
Yin Fan: "…"
Team: "…"
Some benefit.
