Chapter 97: Floating Weeds
The attack of the Electromagnetic Cannon roared like thunder tearing through the night, electrifying everyone on the city wall.
In truth, the soldiers had already glimpsed the unimaginably colossal Giant Snake and were gripped by overwhelming terror.
Perhaps this was precisely what the operators of the Electromagnetic Cannon Group had hoped for: eliminating a rare Fourth Level Extraordinary Beast up close would undoubtedly bolster the faltering morale.
Sure enough, cheers erupted from the city wall, and the exhilarating shouts infused everyone with renewed confidence.
As they gazed at the tide of extraordinary beasts surging forward, the fear seemed to dissipate.
On the eastern section of the outer city’s wall, a different kind of battle was unfolding.
To harness tidal power more effectively, a significant portion of the eastern wall extended into the sea.
The marine section, combined with the natural shoreline, formed a dam-like structure, housing generator units powered by the ebb and flow of the tides below.
In the past, residents of the outer city living by the Seaside would always hear the thunderous hum of the generators during high and low tides.
But today was an exception.
Upon confirming the presence of a beast tide in the Sea, the tidal power generators were immediately shut down, completely isolating the dam’s interior from the outside.
As the gray tide, teeming with countless extraordinary beasts, drew nearer, small Electromagnetic Cannons, incongruous with the wall’s appearance, emerged atop the barnacle-encrusted battlements.
The frosted white barrels slowly rotated, silently gathering energy, each one trained on an extraordinary beast in the Sea.
“Boom! Boom! Boom!”
On the unmanned section of the wall, the small Electromagnetic Cannons unleashed their fury upon the Sea.
Though the seawater significantly diminished the projectiles’ lethality, the remaining kinetic energy was sufficient to clear the extraordinary beasts near the surface.
As for those extraordinary beasts dwelling in the Sea with energy levels surpassing the Third, their massive size prevented them from reaching the shore.
These mindless creatures would inevitably run aground when attempting to come ashore, becoming easy prey for the Electromagnetic Cannons.
Soon, the sea beyond the wall was stained crimson, and the midday sun cast its rays upon what appeared to be a true sea of blood.
Regrettably, this commotion did little to quell the chaos engulfing the outer city.
In less than an hour, the majority of the nutritional paste laced with mycelium had been devoured by the frenzied masses, and the supreme will of the mycelium expanded within Hope City’s biological field as the number of infected grew.
El and his group of four were evacuating the uninfected crowd while making their way toward the inner city.
At that moment, even Li Rui, a self-assured wild superpowered individual, couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of insignificance, like floating weeds adrift in a vast ocean.
Despite his ability to endure countless blows, he found himself powerless to influence the pandemonium amidst the surging crowd.
The only certainty he held was that he had chosen the right person to follow; El, though young, possessed a background and methods that truly warranted the title of “big brother.”
The overwhelming crowd swiftly gathered at the base of the city wall, with nearly ten thousand terrified refugees from the outer city joining their group, and even more people continued to pour in from behind.
Despite the Artificial River ahead, the crowd pressed forward relentlessly.
The sound of people plunging into the water echoed from the front, as even those who had intended to enter the inner city for supplies were pushed in along with their vehicles.
“Stop pushing! Stop pushing, damn it!”
A cacophony of voices melded into a chaotic wave at the base of the city, leaving the soldiers and superpowered individuals guarding the wall momentarily dumbfounded.
“Is this what they call… a riot?”
A seasoned superpowered individual, about forty years old, gazed down at the clamorous crowd below, feeling as though he had been played for a fool by those above.
At his age, he had seen his share of riots.
From past experience, although those riots were quickly quelled, the rioters at least carried basic weapons like wooden sticks and shovels.
But the crowd below, jostling against each other, seemed more like desperate refugees trying to flee into the city than actual rioters.
Many had realized this, and the superpowers that had been poised to strike, as well as the firearms resting on shoulders, relaxed slightly.
The noisy crowd was quickly calmed by a crackling sound emanating from a loudspeaker.
Despite their eagerness to enter the city, their upbringing had instilled in them a habit of paying close attention to announcements.
Soon, a deep, resonant voice boomed:
“If you wish to prove you are not rioters, cease your noise, stop pushing, and select a spokesperson to speak with me privately.”
The moment these words were uttered, silence fell over the area beneath the wall within the broadcast’s range.
Most of the crowd still had no idea what was happening. They had risen early to go to work, only to find their factory abruptly sealed off by a group of grim-faced individuals.
They had planned to return home and rest, but instead saw a number of crazed individuals charging toward the nutritional paste production facility in the streets.
The occasional murmurs kept their nerves on edge, and the sharp crack of gunfire had driven some to seek shelter in their homes, while others chose to flee to the inner city for safety.
Upon arriving, they found the gates to the inner city closed, and now it was too late to turn back.
Many had endured a chaotic morning, and now someone was accusing them of being potential rioters…
It was utterly baffling.
Damn it, isn’t this just bullying honest folk?!
At this thought, many faces showed clear signs of resentment and anger. If this continued, it seemed they might truly descend into chaos.
Just then, a voice rang out from the crowd:
“I am the peace officer of the inner city. I’ve been investigating in the outer city since yesterday, and I know everything that has happened here. Let me speak with you!”
It was a confident female voice.
People turned toward the source and saw a young woman in a black coat, holding her credentials high above her head and waving them toward the wall.
Above the wall, a slightly portly middle-aged man in charge of the area listened to his subordinate’s report with a look of mild surprise.
“She knows everything that’s happened today? I don’t even know.”
With this thought, he picked up a pair of binoculars and looked down at the woman waving her credentials.
Then he saw it—a golden emblem of a long sword glinting in the sunlight.
Damn it, it’s someone from the Ministry of Internal Affairs!
