Chapter 68: Extraordinary Beast Pilot
At this moment, any human captured by an extraordinary beast and lifted dozens of meters into the air would inevitably let out a stream of colorful exclamations.
But extraordinary beasts had no such luxury; their limited vocabulary confined them to a repetitive chorus of "meow."
The extraordinary beast, now at the Third Level, shot upward at nearly a 90-degree angle, quickly leveling with the top of the city wall within seconds.
Its powerful wings stirred up a fierce wind that knocked down a large group of soldiers. With a swift motion of its sharp claws, it flung over a dozen surviving extraordinary beasts onto the wall, which then lunged ferociously at the soldiers.
A gentle light flashed by as a semi-transparent Energy Shield formed a dome, protecting all the disoriented soldiers within.
The extraordinary beasts clawed and bit at the smooth, elastic surface, but to little effect.
The soldiers inside the shield began to regroup, while the surrounding circle gradually tightened, attempting to encircle and eliminate this small wave of extraordinary beasts.
Captain Nian of the sixth squad maneuvered a dozen nails through the Beast Pack, glancing at the Giant Eagle disappearing into the horizon. He turned to the chubby fellow beside him and asked:
“Is that one in the sky okay? It’s quite strong for a Third Level.”
The chubby guy maintained the soft light shield with one hand and replied casually,
“Don’t worry; the old man isn’t in that bad of shape yet.”
Captain Nian looked back at the sky without saying anything more, increasing the speed of his attacks.
He couldn’t shake a nagging feeling of foreboding.
Recently, the atmosphere at the superpowered individuals’ headquarters had been tense, as an older member from Team One seemed to be unwell.
His weakness had begun to affect his abilities.
This member’s power was crucial for the survival of all of Hope City and humanity.
He was the chubby guy’s father, codenamed “Holy Shield,” one of the earliest and strongest superpowered individuals in Hope City, with the ability to create semi-transparent shields that could cover half of the city’s sky.
His presence was a major reason why humanity hadn’t degenerated into semi-subterranean beings.
Among the superpowered individuals, Team One never engaged in outdoor missions, as each member’s abilities were tied to humanity’s survival.
Now, sensing a weakness in the shield, the recent beast tides were increasingly mixed with more flying extraordinary beasts.
Sometimes they were swarms of insects; more often, they were higher-tier avian extraordinary beasts.
And today’s creature looked particularly formidable.
“Hopefully, nothing will happen…” Nian thought to himself.
—
“Meow!!!! (I’m going to lose my cat life!)”
Hundreds of meters off the ground, the Two-headed Cat was desperately howling.
At this moment, it could only see the blue sky above, with a few white clouds drifting below; the entire cat was in a state of panic, its fur standing on end.
It was so incredibly high!
The Two-headed Cat was now tasting the bitter fruit of its own cleverness. When the Giant Eagle had tossed its comrades toward the wall, instinctive fear had made it cling tightly to the eagle’s claw, avoiding becoming cannon fodder on the wall.
But now, the situation was completely different; this was far worse than being cannon fodder!
Moreover, it had no idea where it had been taken and didn’t dare to loosen its grip.
Just then, something seemed to pierce through the clouds below.
The whooshing sounds zipped past the Two-headed Cat’s ears and struck the Giant Eagle’s wings.
But this Third Level extraordinary beast remained unphased; its wounds barely bled.
However, the fast-approaching bullets seemed to jolt the Giant Eagle awake; it twisted its body and began to rapidly descend.
Its location was exposed, and the plan was set to be executed!
With sharp eyes surveying everything below, the crimson pupils reflected the scene within Hope City.
It spotted a hundred meters tall building in the distance, which was exactly the goal of its mission.
As long as it could destroy that object and smash it to Crusher, its task would be complete.
The Giant Eagle continued to drop, its speed surpassing various thresholds and nearly creating a sonic boom in the air.
Amidst the dizziness brought on by the rapid descent and accelerate, the Two-headed Cat lost its balance and was thrown off by the Giant Eagle.
As it screamed while free-falling, an anti-air bullet pierced through its body.
Its wail abruptly stopped.
—
On the other side, the Giant Eagle soared through the rain of bullets, diving up and down and rolling side to side, as if all the bullets were circling around it.
The building was getting closer!
The information relayed from its tribe was indeed correct; the shield that had troubled their tribe for decades had vanished. They could finally launch an aerial attack again!
And it would be the first individual to break through the defenses!
A thrill of excitement coursed through the Giant Eagle’s heart; once the mission was accomplished, it could grow further and gain more nourishment from its tribe!
Unknowingly, its three heads had drawn together, ready to initiate a once-in-a-lifetime charge.
But just then, the Giant Eagle suddenly felt its speed slowing down.
It flapped its wings twice to confirm it wasn’t dreaming; the surrounding air had indeed become stickier than before, and this stickiness was worsening.
“Oh no!”
This thought flashed through the Giant Eagle’s mind; it might have fallen into a trap!
What to do? Keep charging ahead or retreat?
The large amount of nutrients it ingested during its growth allowed the Giant Eagle to maintain some self-awareness while being controlled by the voice from the spores.
Especially after entering human territory, the deeper it went, the fainter the voice from the spores became.
This allowed its awareness to gradually resurface, and it began to sense the danger ahead; seizing the moment before it was too late, it reacted like any wild beast—
to run away.
The extraordinary beast, with a wingspan of ten meters, suddenly turned in the air, agile as a slightly larger insect.
However, its immense inertia still forced it to move forward, but its escape was now unstoppable!
Just then, at the moment the Giant Eagle turned around and reached its slowest speed, just as it prepared to flap its wings again, a semi-transparent light curtain appeared beside it, weaving beams of soft light into a complete sphere.
In the next moment, the light ball abruptly shrank, and the soft light transformed into threads that tightly bound the Giant Eagle.
For the first time, the immobile extraordinary beast felt genuine terror rising from within. Using its instinctual senses, it looked in another direction where a man in a hospital gown with a big beard reached out his right hand toward it.
Though the man’s body appeared balanced, he was actually quite weak.
At the moment of capturing the Giant Eagle, the man leaned on an iron stand with a drip attached to his left arm, a Syringe still embedded in his arm, but none of this diminished the compelling authority he possessed.
