Chapter 65: Domination
The thick fog enveloping the forest blocked all human observation methods and also filtered out most of the sunlight, leaving the forest floor in a perpetual state of dimness.
At night, the gaps between the trees would emit a soft glow, releasing luminescent spores into the air.
The extraordinary beasts thrived in this environment, with hundreds of those born from Green Cocoons barely surviving on the scraps left behind by the Blue Cocoon extraordinary beasts each day.
Some Green Cocoon Extraordinary Beasts attempted to challenge the authority of the insect-like extraordinary beasts, but they only ended up as an additional meal.
Despite this, the extraordinary beasts continued to grow at an astonishing rate.
Within just ten days, this group of extraordinary beasts had reached their mature size.
One day, all the extraordinary beasts made a horrifying discovery: after consuming the liquid from the nutrient pool, the pool, encircled by tree roots, ceased to produce new liquid, and the intertwined roots began to wither and die.
By this time, the extraordinary beasts had developed the ability to communicate through basic gestures and roars.
They exchanged simple messages and ultimately concluded:
"We know nothing about this."
Fortunately, this panic was short-lived. By evening, the trees no longer glowed entirely but only partially, while the spores illuminated a faint path in the air.
The insect-like extraordinary beasts, hatched from Blue Cocoons, were naturally drawn to light and began crawling along the branches or the ground toward the glowing trail.
During this time, although the Green Cocoon Extraordinary Beasts endured cycles of hunger and occasional relief, their inherent reverence for strength compelled them to follow.
After an indeterminate period of wandering through the forest, the extraordinary beasts arrived near an even larger big tree.
This tree had a diameter of several dozen meters, adorned with countless cocoons of various colors.
Unlike the previous big tree, whose canopy could still be faintly glimpsed when the beasts lifted their heads, this tree loomed like an insurmountable wall, instilling deep fear in the extraordinary beasts.
Yet, there was a silver lining. As they approached, one after another, the extraordinary beasts discovered a nutrient pool that had not yet dried up. Having starved for days, they were on the verge of losing their sanity.
The insect-like extraordinary beasts, in particular, charged forward recklessly, even pushing aside their kin.
But just as the first insect-like extraordinary beast was about to leap into the nutrient pool and feast, a sharp bird cry echoed from above.
The Two-headed Cat, lagging behind, looked up to see a massive silhouette circling in the thick fog.
Instinctively, the Two-headed Cat halted.
Its gaze remained fixed on the sky, and in that moment, this lowly extraordinary beast felt a pang of envy—though it didn’t understand the emotion.
Most of the extraordinary beasts, seemingly devoid of thinking ability, pressed onward.
The sound of rushing wind filled the air—not the natural wind, but the flapping of wings from extraordinary beasts hidden in the fog.
Then, the rushing sound turned into a piercing whistle as the massive silhouette abruptly stopped circling and dove straight toward the nutrient pool.
The leading extraordinary beast hadn’t even tasted a drop of the nutrient solution before its entire body vanished.
"Thud."
The head of the extraordinary beast, its mouthparts extended, fell into the nutrient pool, its blue-green blood spreading in delicate tendrils.
The flying extraordinary beast, now ascending, used its razor-sharp beak to slice through another beast while its owl-like head kept a vigilant eye on the others below.
By the nutrient pool, all the extraordinary beasts fell silent, trembling in fear.
In previous skirmishes, the Green Cocoon Extraordinary Beasts could at least hold their own against the insect-like extraordinary beasts from the Blue Cocoons. But now, the sheer speed of the attack and the effortless decapitation left them utterly subjugated.
These creatures were no match—they were merely walking to their deaths.
The three-headed, double-winged eagle-like creature perched on a branch of the big tree and began its feast.
Beside the branch was an empty cocoon chamber, its membrane tinged with a distinct purple hue.
Its three heads worked in eerie harmony: the vulture head divided the food into equal portions, the crane head claimed one share, and the owl head took another.
Yet, the owl head, capable of rotating its neck over 360 degrees, seemed disinterested in the insect carcass in its beak. It tilted its head, intrigued by the trembling Two-headed Cat hidden among the Beast Pack below.
In the days that followed, the extraordinary beasts experienced true hunger.
Unlike the occasional hunger they endured during their travels, this was absolute, unrelenting starvation.
The nutrient pool, less than three meters away, only deepened their torment.
Whenever an extraordinary beast succumbed to temptation and tried to drink, the diving predator from above swiftly ended its life.
During this time, thousands of extraordinary beasts from other trees joined their ranks, yet none dared to defy the authority of the creature in the sky.
Finally, after over a dozen Blue and Green Cocoon extraordinary beasts perished, the purple cocoon beast above seemed to reach maturity.
Its size nearly doubled in a matter of days, and the gusts from its wings were strong enough to topple smaller extraordinary beasts.
After an extended period of circling and a prolonged howl lasting nearly an hour, the forest seemed to undergo a transformation.
The Two-headed Cat witnessed a shocking sight:
Though it was daytime, the surrounding trees began releasing glowing spores.
These spores no longer provided a guiding light but instead emitted a pulsating gray-black glow.
The Two-headed Cat instinctively tried to avoid them, but its fur became speckled with the spores.
Holding its breath proved futile. The Two-headed Cat felt its body slipping out of its control, as if a supreme will had connected to its mind and begun issuing commands.
The extraordinary beast resisted instinctively but was powerless to stop it.
The Two-headed Cat watched helplessly as all the extraordinary beasts around it fell into the same state.
Finally, the insect-like extraordinary beasts burrowed beneath the larger Green Cocoon Extraordinary Beasts, flipped their bodies, and drove their sharp limb tips into the Green Cocoon Extraordinary Beasts’ flesh.
With this act complete, the extraordinary beasts moved in unison, like The Walking Dead, toward a single destination.
