Chapter 279: Barrier-Free Communication
As the figures returning from the hunt in the distance drew closer, Shadow Master rose from his chair.
“We need to prepare to leave.”
“Mm.”
Dawn Sound responded softly, her voice betraying a lingering unease.
The surrounding brightness gradually dimmed, and darkness slowly crept over the land.
When the extraordinary beasts returned to the camp near the red line, Shadow Master, standing by the city wall, placed his hand on Dawn Sound’s shoulder.
“You might feel a bit dizzy, like… motion sickness.”
Dawn Sound’s expression tightened as she clutched her notebook tightly.
In the next moment, the surrounding darkness and shadows seemed to come alive, twisting and climbing upward along the points where her body met the ground.
The sensation was like being slowly submerged in a cold, unknown liquid, where the chill mingled with a tight, enveloping pressure.
Dawn Sound could no longer see anything.
Unlike the darkness on the city wall, where faint outlines were still visible, her surroundings now lacked any describable color—it was the complete loss of vision, as if her eyes were tightly shut.
One of her senses had been stripped away, but as compensation, her hearing seemed to sharpen.
The sound of the night wind sweeping across the plain reached her ears, reassuring her that she hadn’t lost all connection to the outside world.
A few seconds later, her body swayed, and the cold, enveloping sensation quickly faded, replaced by the return of darkness flooding her vision.
She and Shadow Master had emerged from the shadows, now standing on the edge of the red line marked by machine guns on the city wall.
This, too, was a gesture of goodwill.
Since the red line marked the closest point where extraordinary beasts could avoid gunfire, humans were expected to respect this boundary and not cross it lightly.
“Let’s begin.”
Shadow Master took half a step back, though his hand remained on Dawn Sound’s shoulder.
He was prepared; if either side showed any sign of entering combat mode during their communication, he would immediately whisk her back to the city wall through the shadows.
Dawn Sound gazed toward the extraordinary beast camp not far ahead. Though it was now fully dark, she could still match some details of the camp with what she had observed through binoculars earlier that afternoon.
For instance, near the camp entrance, at the edge of the second spine, there was a large crater dug by claws, filled with broken bones and empty nutritional paste packaging.
Hmm, quite hygienic…
As Dawn Sound watched the camp, several shadowy figures rustled, and she opened her mouth to emit an unusual sound.
The sound seemed beyond human capability; even Shadow Master, standing behind her, detected an ethereal quality to it.
Several extraordinary beasts, busy dismembering their prey, pricked up their ears and froze in place.
Fulan also heard the sound and, noticing her companions’ silence, asked in the biological field:
“Did everyone hear that? What does it mean?”
The two outer heads of the three wolves were busy devouring their meal, while the middle head replied:
“We’re not entirely sure either, but it feels like an invitation to meet.”
Fulan fell silent; the sound she had just heard was less like language and more akin to the call of a beast she had never encountered before.
Yet, this call seemed to transcend the boundaries between species of extraordinary beasts, enabling all of them to comprehend it.
After a moment of thought, she turned to the broad-shouldered Great Elder.
“Let’s go and see.”
Minutes after the signal was sent, Dawn Sound sensed massive figures moving steadily through the darkness ahead.
Though the darkness shrouded everything, the heavy footsteps and the oppressive atmosphere made her swallow hard.
As the enormous extraordinary beast, resembling a city wall, drew near, Dawn Sound instinctively looked up.
Her expression swiftly shifted from fear to astonishment—
“A… an elephant?”
Even in the dimmest light, Dawn Sound felt that this massive extraordinary beast resembled a creature from the Old Era she had read about in her studies.
Her mind raced, and soon she pressed her finger to the edge of her nostrils and emitted a peculiar sound.
“Boss, this human can talk!”
The enormous extraordinary beast transmitted a message to Fulan through the biological field:
“And I can understand her directly.”
At that moment, Fulan felt the urge to exclaim how remarkable it was, but she remained composed and said calmly,
“You can greet her.
“This is the strength of humans, right? Have you seen it now?
“If we can return to Hope City and live alongside humans, you can ask this human if she’s willing to accept you.”
“Yay!”
The enormous extraordinary beast let out a resounding call.
Fulan ignored the creature’s excitement and leaped down from its head, landing in front of Shadow Master and Dawn Sound.
The two humans and the cat stood separated by an invisible red line, their eyes locking in a silent exchange.
“Meow~”
“Hello, human.”
They spoke simultaneously.
The silence in the darkness felt sharp and uneasy.
“You can speak human… or cat language?”
They both asked again at the same time.
This time, however, they used the language of the humans.
In truth, Fulan was more skilled at communicating with humans than with other extraordinary beasts; her advanced cognitive abilities set her apart, making interactions with those creatures feel almost like talking to children.
Dawn Sound, on the other hand, was struck by a sense of unreality.
After all her preparation, even rehearsing in her mind how to communicate with the livestock in the underground pastures, she had aimed for seamless communication with the extraordinary beasts.
Yet now, it seemed that seamless communication had been achieved, but it felt as though the other side was accommodating her.
Records had mentioned that only the small cat could communicate with humans on the city wall through writing.
They hadn’t said anything about it speaking human language!
In an instant, Dawn Sound’s mind was flooded with thoughts of “I’m useless.”
Now, the only way forward was to handle this situation well, so as not to tarnish her reputation as a superpowered individual who could communicate with animals.
“Uh, okay, it’s a pleasure to communicate with you, Mr. Cat.”
“Ms.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Ms. Cat.”
“It’s fine, Ms. Human.”
“Uh, let me introduce myself. My name is Dawn Sound, from Hope City. You can just call me Dawn Sound.”
“Why don’t you ask what my name is?”
The small cat looked up and inquired.
Dawn Sound felt momentarily confused but quickly understood.
The other side was a highly intelligent extraordinary beast capable of seamless communication with humans, so it was only natural for it to have a name, right?
Her discomfort at being called “Ms. Human” might not be so different from how the creature felt.
“Sorry, may I ask what your name is?”
“Fulan.”
