Chapter 278: Perfect Preparation
During that disaster, a superpowered individual with the code name Vine went missing.
He hailed from the underground farms, and his ability was to accelerate plant growth within a certain radius.
He recalled Vine’s details and glanced at the young woman beside him…
Damn it, why does this keep happening?!
The military vehicle raced along the radiating roads of the outer city, with Hope City residents quickly stepping aside as it passed.
As noon approached, Shadow Master and Dawn Sound arrived at the city walls of the outer city to begin their handover with some weary soldiers on duty.
Dawn Sound took over the observation records from the soldier who had been documenting the past few days. Shadow Master acted as a bodyguard and assistant, questioning the observer who had noticed the red eyes.
After assigning the reserve team to take over the current observation task, they entered a military tent at the city wall to hold a small meeting.
It was, after all, the hunting time for the extraordinary beasts, so there should be no attempted breaches.
Those extraordinary beasts did appear friendly, but they also possessed considerable intelligence.
Unlike the creatures that only knew how to roar and maul, the potential for deception on the human side existed.
However, the mission must continue; humans could not survive in Hope City forever, so communication with those extraordinary beasts was necessary.
Thinking this, Shadow Master decided to eavesdrop a bit while preparing to gather insights.
Dawn Sound, despite her somewhat rustic appearance, had a decisive nature in her work style.
After quickly scanning the observation records twice, she began summarizing issues while questioning the three people who had been on duty these past few days.
Faced with the aura Dawn Sound displayed, the three felt a bit jittery. One question after another left them feeling unable to withstand the pressure, forcing them to engage in brief discussions just to remember the details of the past events.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the table, the superpowered individual Dawn Sound wrote notes with such speed that it seemed her pen left behind shadows, eager to list all possible occurrences.
Shadow Master quietly observed this scene, mentally giving an invisible thumbs up to Dawn Sound’s work ability.
But soon, he caught sight of her tightly pressed lips and her expression of concern.
In that instant, he gained further insight — this logistical superpowered individual, who had never been on the battlefield, was indeed afraid of death.
Her diligent and cautious approach to her work was also to ensure her own safety.
This realization did not tarnish the image of Dawn Sound in Shadow Master’s mind; rather, it seemed even more reasonable.
After all, there were many fools who had never been on the battlefield; part of them were foolish yet unaware, eager to spread their flawed viewpoints to assimilate those around them.
Dawn Sound clearly valued her life, and coincidentally, Shadow Master did too. Thus, the fact that two life-valuing individuals acted together in the face of potential danger (in terms of retreat) made perfect sense.
Thinking this, Shadow Master felt a soothing calmness within.
Dawn Sound’s contingency plans continued to grow, thickening over time until the predetermined action time approached.
The sun gradually sank in the west, and the unsealed military tents could no longer shield against the sunlight.
The shadows of the group first stretched longer until they eventually merged with the oncoming darkness.
Night was Shadow Master’s domain.
As the sun dipped below the western horizon, Dawn Sound finally set aside her pen and paper. She reached into her backpack and distributed the food she had brought to Shadow Master and the three soldiers, who had endured a relentless barrage of questions all afternoon.
“What’s this?”
The soldier, his eyes slightly reddened, stared at the oddly packaged food sealed in transparent wrapping, his voice tinged with confusion.
“It’s jerky from the inner city. Everyone should try some—consider it a reward for the intense work this afternoon.”
Though Dawn Sound phrased it that way, Shadow Master, who had been idling the entire time, also received a portion.
No matter how much he had tried to stay unnoticed earlier, he knew he would need her cooperation for the upcoming tasks.
The three soldiers, treating the sealed jerky like a treasure, carefully stashed it away. After confirming they had no further duties, they left the table and returned to their work stations.
Dawn Sound continued organizing her notes, occasionally glancing up at Shadow Master, who was savoring the beef jerky with evident relish.
“If I may ask, how often do you usually eat this kind of food?”
“Me?”
Shadow Master pointed at himself, swallowing the bite in his mouth before replying:
“Not very often, but I do have it once or twice a month, usually at the start or end of the month. There’s also extra after the beast tide.”
Dawn Sound nodded thoughtfully:
“It seems the production is still too low. Sigh, it’s unavoidable. Those animals are smarter than we think—they seem to realize that the blue sky and white clouds on the display screen aren’t real.
“You might find this hard to believe, but based on my observations, the majority of livestock in the underground pastures actually suffer from some degree of psychological issues.”
Shadow Master knew little about the inner city’s underground facilities, only that they appeared to be the private property of certain council members.
However, his eyelids twitched at the mention of “psychological.” He suddenly recalled a certain psychologist who, though seemingly harmless, had subtly schemed against his subordinates.
That individual had been specially endorsed by General Wencheng. If sent to the underground pastures, perhaps they could treat the psychological issues of those cattle and sheep.
After indulging in this slightly malicious thought for a few seconds, Shadow Master, unsure how to continue the conversation, simply followed Dawn Sound’s lead:
“So, do you think these psychological issues might affect the creatures’… um, taste?”
Dawn Sound abruptly lifted her head from her notes, her eyes wide with surprise:
“That’s a very constructive question! I think the research institutes should form a dedicated team to study this… but wouldn’t that be a bit of a waste of resources and manpower?”
Shadow Master, sensing her somewhat immature perspective, thought for a moment before replying:
“If everyone in Hope City could afford this, then it wouldn’t be a waste of resources or manpower.”
Dawn Sound did some quick mental calculations, then sighed and dropped the subject, her head drooping slightly.
Shadow Master’s gaze wandered between Dawn Sound and the camp of extraordinary beasts beyond the city walls. After about ten minutes, he finally spotted a few extraordinary beasts returning from a hunt.
Though he couldn’t see if they carried any prey, the fact that their numbers remained unchanged suggested no losses this time.
Shadow Master couldn’t help but mutter to himself:
“They’re all First Level inferior extraordinary beasts—how is their survival rate still so high? Could they really be that clever?”
