Chapter 27: The Cowardly Battle with the Lizard
"You are a bit lax in managing the public security in your jurisdiction…"
"Public security management is a bit lax…"
"A bit lax…"
Late at night, on her way back to the security bureau, Zhuang Mian gritted her teeth and repeated this line that completely shattered her composure, not noticing the flash of headlights at the street corner ahead.
—
"Big Brother, wake up! They’re coming!"
Late at night, in a truck parked by the roadside, the man in the passenger seat shook the driver, who was snoring thunderously.
"What’s wrong?"
The man woke from his sleep and quickly understood his companion’s message. Rubbing his eyes, he commanded:
"Wake the brothers; it’s time to get revenge for the boss!"
"Got it, Big Brother!"
The lookout in the passenger seat gently opened the door and ran towards the van following behind, while the "Big Brother" lowered his head, watching the approaching vehicle on the road.
Their boss had died recently at the hands of a rising assassin.
Logically, this had nothing to do with Zhuang Mian, but these simple-minded guys were easily stirred up, lying in wait to carry out a big scheme.
The nights in the outer city were desolate, and the sound of two vehicles filled with peace officers seemed to be the only melody beneath the night sky. Zhuang Mian, still in the passenger seat of the first vehicle, was clenching her teeth, feeling yet another sleepless night approaching.
The officers in the car felt drowsy, and just as they passed through the intersection, a dump truck suddenly charged out from the left lane with its lights off.
"Boom!"
The fully loaded dump truck slammed into the side of the first vehicle without any slowing down, sending it flying.
The second vehicle crashed into the tire on the side of the dump truck with a sharp screech.
Zhuang Mian felt as though her body had been struck by a giant hammer, and the whole world began to spin chaotically. But she quickly realized her situation; before the vehicle’s rolling had stopped, she had already grabbed her pistol at her waist.
At the same time, she noticed that the middle-aged thug in the driver’s seat had his head tilted at an unimaginable angle…
"Go! Get revenge for the boss!"
"Kill those damn things!"
"Public security, my ass!"
The side door of the van behind the dump truck swung open, and a group of people brandishing steel pipes, baseball bats, and even wooden sticks charged toward the two peace officer vehicles, screaming.
At this point, the first vehicle had stopped rolling, lying at a grotesque angle next to a power pole at the edge of the road, awaiting its fate of being thoroughly dismantled.
The second vehicle wasn’t severely damaged, but as the gang with various weapons rushed toward them, the recovering officers felt their anger boil—
If they couldn’t deal with the Heart Snatcher, how could they not handle you fools?
The officers drew their guns, ready to let this group of clueless ones taste heat weapons, but unexpectedly, a strong man hidden behind the enemy suddenly pushed aside the teammates in front of him. He wielded an automatic rifle in each strong arm and began firing at the smoking vehicles.
In an instant, the officers inside the car ducked down, using the bulletproof features of the car door to avoid bullets flying past their ears.
"Calling for backup! Hurry!"
Seated in the driver’s seat, Deputy Captain Zhao Qi was shaken awake by his teammate in the passenger seat. He leaned down to look at their Captain, whose fate was uncertain, and the several injured teammates nearby, not to mention the gang members gradually approaching their car…
Zhao Qi clenched his teeth, shifted gears with force, and then hit the accelerator, forcing their battered vehicle out from beneath the dump truck.
He then jerked the steering wheel back and forth, crashing into a dozen gang members as he drove back the way they came, unconcerned about whether his companions agreed with his actions.
On the other side, hearing the vehicle’s sound fade away, Zhuang Mian, who had half her body sticking out of the car window, felt like everything was over…
—
"It’s fine, you’ll just be over there for a year or two. Once those guys forget about this, we’ll bring you back."
"Yeah, don’t worry. The outer city is only a bit chaotic; it’s not as terrifying as they say. With your skills, you’ll thrive there."
"Go for it! We’ll be waiting for you to return~"
—
Zhuang Mian violently banged her head against the nearby lamppost, forcibly stopping the grim carousel of death. The more urgent the situation, the more she needed to stay calm; why was she cursing herself to die?
Two magazines, twenty-four bullets, she still had a chance!
Just then, she heard a sharp crash sound, like some mischievous kid by the roadside hitting the car roof with a stone.
An ominous premonition surged in her heart. Without thinking further, Zhuang Mian rolled into the roadside ditch a few meters away from the power pole, just as her car exploded with a loud bang, sending metal fragments flying in all directions. She barely avoided being turned into a sieve by less than a second.
In the end, she was the only survivor among the nearly ten people in that vehicle…
Zhuang Mian watched helplessly as the vehicle was mercilessly engulfed in flames, not having time to mourn for her fallen teammates. One after another, fierce-looking enemies began to emerge from behind the flames.
"Crack."
Zhuang Mian cocked the hammer and raised her gun, aiming at the closest enemy.
"Drip~"
A raindrop landed on her nose, finally bringing an end to a whole day of sweltering heat.
A fierce gunfight broke out around the Wang Hai intersection in the outer city.
—
The heavy rain ruthlessly washed away everything on the ground, the gunfire fading into the curtain of rain, and blood and flesh were carried away by the rushing water…
In the alley, when Zhuang Mian’s last bullet pierced the brain of the final armed enemy, she was already three blocks away from where the initial intersection had been.
"I’m… the shooting champion from that year…"
Dozens of enemies either died or fled, and Zhuang Mian had completely lost her strength. She leaned against the narrow space between two buildings, letting the torrential rain wash away the heat from her body. In her ears, she could still faintly hear the barely audible alarm bell of the Public Security Team.
Her limbs had taken two bullets, her right shoulder and left abdomen each had a bullet hole, and her arms were covered with varying depths of cut wounds. The only reason she had been able to hold on until now was because of a body enhancement serum given to her by her father when she was studying in the inner city.
After using that serum, all her bodily functions had permanently improved, but only to a limited extent.
However, the effects of the serum developed collaboratively by the biotechnologies and Department of Superpower Technology always had their limits. Right now, Zhuang Mian felt that the enhanced senses were not a blessing, as she could clearly feel the flow of her life slipping away, but she couldn’t reach out to stop it.
Like quicksand leaking through her fingers.
It was an indescribable experience of pain.
"It’s about to end…"
"Boom!"
The unique thunder of the stormy night rumbled in the distant sky, lighting up the alley where Zhuang Mian stood for an instant with a flash of lightning. She strained her eyes open and saw a figure standing ahead, holding an umbrella.
The figure’s shadow was cast on the rough wall by the lightning, making the features already obscured by the umbrella even more indistinct…
