Chapter 258: Are those who deceive beasts considered human or beasts?
“I trust you. So how do we get down?”
Ink Drench, who tentatively agreed to the plan, shifted the conversation to the next step.
The city wall stood tens of meters high; it was no easy feat for extraordinary beasts to scale it, let alone for humans to move freely during combat.
“This isn’t difficult.”
Wang Xiao turned and called out, prompting a superpowered individual to set down her sniper rifle and hurry over.
“This is our team member, Shi Jin, code name Twin Clock. She can manipulate the flow of time within a specific area.
“She’ll take us down.”
“Alright, I have no objections.”
Ink Drench nodded, not bothering to ask how they would return.
In her mind, the plan had only two possible outcomes: either she and Wang Xiao would perish below, or they would eliminate all the extraordinary beasts and wait for the lift on the city wall.
“Transfer command of the team to ‘bipolar disorder.’ Let’s begin the operation.”
Wang Xiao relayed the command briefly to Shi Jin, who confirmed it was feasible.
“Then let’s begin.”
Shi Jin gave a quick reminder, placing her hands on the shoulders of both companions.
At that moment, the world seemed to fall silent, and a golden second hand appeared to rotate slowly in Shi Jin’s eyes.
She grasped Ink Drench and Wang Xiao, weaving effortlessly through the soldiers’ crossfire, leaping off the city wall and racing downward.
With the dual manipulation of time, the effects of gravity became almost negligible. Shi Jin only needed to ensure her companions wouldn’t suffer from the impact when her ability ended.
To be more precise, since Wang Xiao’s life force was robust, the only one she truly needed to focus on was Ink Drench.
To Wang Xiao and Ink Drench, it felt as though less than a second had passed; they didn’t even blink, yet the scenery before them shifted to the base of the city wall.
The massive alligator head now dominated half their field of vision, and the surrounding insect-like extraordinary beasts momentarily froze at the sight before some resumed scaling the wall while others charged directly at them.
“Are you sure this will work?”
“It will. Activate your ability now.”
Ink Drench said nothing more. A faint aura of Death Energy swirled and expanded around her, forming an invisible barrier that stretched outward, halting just before it reached the city wall’s surface.
The area was enveloped in a withering force.
The First Level and Second Level extraordinary beasts charging toward Ink Drench had their eyes shift rapidly from red to white. After taking just two steps forward, they collapsed, lifeless, to the ground.
Their bodies showed no signs of decay, withering away as if they had simply reached the end of their natural lifespan.
The extraordinary beasts from Green Cocoon had their skin rapidly dry and age, while the chitinous outer shells of the insect-like extraordinary beasts faded from vibrant hues to a dull, lifeless gray.
Wang Xiao felt a brief wave of dizziness.
It was as though an invisible faucet had been opened within him, and the resource known as life force was steadily draining away.
If he hadn’t replenished himself after being entangled by thorn bushes recently, he might have started to panic.
Feeling such a palpable threat even as a Third Level individual, Wang Xiao suspected that Ink Drench might already be at the Fourth Level. If not, she was undoubtedly among the most formidable at the Third Level.
Strangely, the life force that leaked out was not absorbed by Ink Drench; instead, it seemed to be banished into the void, vanishing without a trace.
Without time to lament the waste brought by Ink Drench’s ability, Wang Xiao quickly assessed his own condition. Confirming he could move normally, he began executing the prearranged plan.
Ink Drench’s ability could nearly eliminate First Level and Second Level extraordinary beasts instantly, so there was no need to worry about the monster tide affecting her.
However, a Third Level Avian Creature had already noticed Ink Drench’s presence. At the same time, perhaps sensing its own fatigue, the massive alligator also turned several of its eyes toward the ground where Ink Drench stood.
That was Wang Xiao’s task; in this regard, he truly was a genuine guardian.
The first to attack was the Giant Bird in the sky.
Though it was called a Giant Bird, with a wingspan of just under three meters, its sharp beak and cold, glimmering claws sent chills down one’s spine.
It began to dive from its circling position in the air, and Wang Xiao braced himself for its approach.
The moment it entered Ink Drench’s ability area, Wang Xiao noticed the feathers on the bird no longer appeared smooth and glossy.
Like him, it seemed to have experienced a brief shock, causing its dive to momentarily freeze.
As it neared the ground, the Giant Bird leveled off and extended its sharp claws downward, akin to a plane lowering its landing gear.
Wang Xiao positioned himself in front of Ink Drench, acting as a human shield.
The Giant Bird had never seen a human who would not dodge its attack.
Although it couldn’t speak human language, it could not help but question why Wang Xiao did not avoid its assault as it opted for its buffet.
Its sharp claws pierced through Wang Xiao’s shoulder, and the Giant Bird lifted the strong man upward.
But just for an instant, it felt something was off—
Was it truly holding a human?
Instead of warm flesh and blood, the Giant Bird felt as though it had clutched a piece of ice or a heavy iron ball, as if it weren’t hunting but instead putting on its own shackles.
After another moment, the Giant Bird realized the nature of the problem.
Its life force was rapidly depleting, at a rate far beyond what it could accept.
But that didn’t make sense; it had already felt a loss when it dove down, a level it thought it could handle. Why did it feel this way now that it caught this person…?
The Giant Bird understood.
One of its heads dipped down, glaring angrily at Wang Xiao, who was draining its life force.
Damn it, how poisonous!
Its sharp beak began to peck at Wang Xiao’s body repeatedly. Feeling the pain, Wang Xiao seemed to hear the bird’s curses:
“Let go, you fool!”
Yes, after confirming the second source of its life force loss, the Giant Bird quickly released its claws, trying to drop this “poisoned bait.”
But Wang Xiao did not agree with its actions—wanting to grab, it grabbed; wanting to let go, it let go; what did it think he was?
Sensing the gradually diminishing strength in its claws, Wang Xiao swiftly raised his hand and locked around the Giant Bird’s ankle.
Even after freeing himself from the bird’s grasp, he attempted to climb its body, but he halted due to the intense pecking.
Seeing that one head’s pecking was ineffective, the Giant Bird disregarded everything else; the other two heads began to attack Wang Xiao from different angles.
The fatigue from losing life made the Giant Bird’s flight erratic. With a loud bang, it crashed its head—or rather, its neck—into the city wall.
The tremendous impact shattered its cervical vertebrae, and the Giant Bird began to plummet like a leaf. Even so, it had not died yet.
But Wang Xiao, who held on tightly, clearly had more to say…
