Chapter 239: My Turn
The life pod was not light at all; despite the use of advanced technology, its weight was still comparable to that of a normal adult.
This damaged life pod, which had been around for who knows how many years, weighed just as much even though most of the soft parts inside had rotted away.
Under normal circumstances, it would definitely take two people or just Wang Xiao to lift it, but after activating her ability, the change in the flow of time allowed Shi Jin to accomplish something similar by herself.
Shi Jin tugged at the life pod and ran wildly, taking a moment to glance at Wang Xiao through the gaps in the plant branches.
That glance startled her.
Although her teammate’s body had regrown most of the way, the surface color was not quite normal skin but rather a mix between skin tone and the color of bark, as if the absorbed life force had not fully transformed.
Despite appearing almost like a monster, Shi Jin felt powerless to help, so she continued on her way back, quickly joining the Captain.
"Back so soon?"
Fresnel was a bit surprised; even when considering the slowed flow of time, this speed seemed too fast.
"The life pod is very close to Wang Xiao and not where we discarded it."
"Alright, check it, just to be safe."
Fresnel cautiously issued the command as Shi Jin opened the life pod.
Inside the cylindrical object, under the watchful eyes of her teammates, nothing was present except for a notebook with some mold spots that came into view.
"What is this?"
Before Shi Jin finished speaking, Fresnel excitedly took it from her.
After flipping through a few pages, the joy vanished from his face.
"Have you seen this notebook before?"
"Yes, it’s a personal item belonging to Nian."
Fresnel closed the Hard-shell Notebook and put it back, pondering thoughtfully:
"You mentioned the life pod wasn’t in its original location? If I’m guessing correctly, it should be Nian’s remaining will that helped us, just like before in our escape from danger."
None of the others responded to such an inference.
While everyone believed it eight parts out of ten in their hearts, they still felt genuine sorrow—there was reluctance, nostalgia, and the pain of witnessing the fate of their kind.
In this silence, a chilling roar echoed from afar.
Amidst the layers of overlapping branches, repeating cycles of rebirth and death, it seemed that Wang Xiao’s absorption ability had reached a certain limit.
His body had fully healed, but the surrounding plants’ decay rate had noticeably slowed.
Having nearly limitless life force to draw from was usually a good thing, but not this time.
These terrifying, animal-like plants would stack up if not killed within a short time, like a densely woven fishing net blocking all vitality.
After another burst, Wang Xiao showed most of his body, but half of his side and a small part of his legs remained tightly ensnared.
Seeing their teammate’s struggle, Beacon, Shi Jin, and the others all wore worried expressions. But only Fresnel stood up straight this time, like a beast ready to continue sprinting after resting.
Fresnel stepped forward, starting to accelerate, and his confident voice reached his teammates’ ears:
"Can you see clearly? That’s good, because it means dawn has arrived."
Yes, dawn has arrived.
The group had been fleeing since the latter half of the night, detonating the Energy Battery just past midnight, after which Wang Xiao was surrounded by plants.
Fresnel chose not to retreat further, not only because he valued his teammates’ lives but also due to his confidence in his own abilities.
Even with a weakness that could not be ignored, Fresnel still earned a B in the ability assessment, and after the rigorous training, he was rated B+.
This rating was certainly for a reason, and the reason was simple: pure strength.
Watching the Captain’s departing figure, the usually quiet Puppet Master softly muttered a short phrase:
"Steady."
Suddenly, within a radius of nearly a hundred meters centered on the group, the morning sunlight seemed to grow dim, as if time had slightly reversed, returning to before the sun had appeared on the horizon.
The clouds in the sky didn’t change, nor did the surrounding scenery, but the brightness within that vast area suddenly diminished for no apparent reason.
At the same time, a fiery beam of light appeared in Fresnel’s hand, or more accurately, in front of him. This beam, while only as thick as an arm, resembled a rising red sun, sweeping all around with the power to burn everything.
Wherever the light passed, both plants and dry grass crumbled, and the air was filled with smoke from the partially burned charcoal.
"Swish!"
The light swept over, and the branch ball that Wang Xiao was in had already lost nearly half of its material.
Fresnel clearly paid close attention to his control, like the finest chef in the inner city performing exquisite knife tricks for distinguished guests.
"Swish, swish!"
More branches fell and scattered; some charred while others turned gray.
After a few strokes, or perhaps a dozen, Wang Xiao had begun to take on a humanoid shape, with only a few remaining branches still binding him, making him look like a bug caught in a spider’s web.
If the overwhelming branches had previously left Wang Xiao struggling, the remaining few were no longer a concern.
Having endured a long period of overload, he no longer cared about this slight burden as a flash of fierce intent sparked in his slightly reddened eyes, which swiftly caused those branches to wither completely.
With a strong pull from his hands, he broke free from the restraints and fell down.
Though his skin still looked off, he was now completely out of danger.
The surrounding plants were still nearly endless, but now they posed no threat.
The sun gradually rose higher, and the light grew brighter; Fresnel would only become stronger in the next six hours.
He could create a beam of light equal to the current intensity over a smaller area or enhance his abilities while keeping the range unchanged.
Whichever way he chose, it meant victory for him. Since the plants hadn’t hurried to finish him off before dawn, he didn’t mind claiming the fruit of victory.
Looking at the naked man before him, Fresnel cut and slashed at the surrounding branches with the beam of light while unwrapping his outer coat and wrapping it around Wang Xiao’s waist.
“Watch your impact.”
“Um, got it. I’ll definitely be careful next time.”
“Indeed, you should be careful. Let’s mention this to the equipment department and see if they can make a suit that won’t break or something.”
“Captain, I don’t think that’s the issue; after all, his backside is still in the tree.”
