Chapter 213: "What day is it today?"
"What is that?"
The moment she heard this question, Extract felt a tingling sensation on her scalp.
What’s going on?
Why does this feel so familiar?
She remained still, watching as her teammates quickly picked up the metal plaque. After wiping it clean, they read the inscription aloud:
"Year 32 of the New Era, researcher from the Biotechnology Research Department, direct superpowered group, Zhang Tong."
As the Captain read the content on the metal plaque, Extract’s anxious heart found no solace.
Seeing her teammates hand the metal plaque to Trace, she instinctively reached out:
"Wait a minute."
Her teammates turned to look at her:
"What’s wrong?"
Extract gathered her thoughts and spoke cautiously:
"Extraordinary beasts possess a certain level of thinking ability. If this is a trap, then slowing down the rewind process at the initial activation of Trace’s ability might yield other insights."
Trace nodded and replied,
"That makes sense; I’ll be careful. But if it was placed here recently, we might not see the complete process…"
Extract had already considered this point, but she still reminded her teammates to be extra vigilant. She wouldn’t give up the possibility of Trace finding something unusual just because hope seemed dim.
With a basic mental preparation, Trace began to activate her ability.
A few minutes later, the metal plaque in her mind transformed back into a metal ingot. She slowly opened her eyes and began to recount her findings.
Although the memories of the dream were somewhat hazy, Extract was able to correlate some of its contents with what her teammates had said. The vague sense of repetition filled her with deep terror.
After Trace finished describing what she saw, she looked at Extract and explained,
"I’m sorry, but the initial scene doesn’t seem to change; this plaque doesn’t appear to have come from an extraordinary beast."
At this point, Extract had adjusted her mindset. She nodded, seemingly feeling a bit relieved:
"As long as it’s safe."
Meanwhile, this superpowered individual secretly made a decision: she had to find the core of the problem and could not let the team slide into an eerie abyss.
As Extract anticipated, the group began to search for their predecessor’s remains nearby while also looking for that sample box.
Of course, there were no results. Time quickly moved to evening, and the brightness in the forest continued to diminish. The white mist overhead, which seemed as if it would never dissipate, began to press down bit by bit, resembling a sea of clouds in the sky.
Extract cautiously approached the Captain and said,
"Captain, can I keep that predecessor’s metal plaque?"
Zheng Gaoya paused for a moment, then pulled the plaque from the hidden pouch of his combat suit and handed it to Extract,
"You seem a bit off today. Did you discover something?"
He asked with concern.
"Perhaps there is…"
Extract lowered her head and rubbed the metal plaque with her fingers:
"But it’s still in the verification stage. My ability has sensed something, so I can’t explain it clearly to everyone.
"However, Captain, rest assured. If I discover anything, I will inform you immediately."
"Alright, I trust you."
Zheng Gaoya was momentarily taken aback by his teammate’s words, then he gently patted her shoulder twice:
"If you encounter any difficulties, make sure to speak up."
Extract didn’t say anything more, just nodded and began setting up the camp.
Everything seemed the same as before. Under the pressure of the descending white fog, everyone set up the camp, used their abilities to light a campfire, and after consuming the nutritional paste, they entered a night watch rotation.
However, unlike last time, Extract felt completely awake this time.
On the way to the camp, she always walked at the back of the group, extracting a bit of life force by touching the surrounding gray-white trees.
Now, she was using this extra energy to keep herself alert.
This was a clever use of her ability; the only downside was that while it ensured her physical vitality was plentiful without sleep, it didn’t have any noticeable effects on her lack of mental rest.
Extract’s thoughts were simple; tonight, she would not rest and must see what was really happening.
It seemed almost destined; when Extract lay down, she once again saw the small conical mound of dirt in the direction behind her.
She casually dug it up and silently recovered the green locator.
As night deepened, the white fog continued to descend slowly.
In one hand, Extract held the metal plaque she got from the Captain, while the other hand gripped her locator, constantly alert to everything happening around her.
The white fog sank lower and finally reached a critical point. In her alert state, Extract felt a wave of dizziness and then lost control of her body and consciousness.
When she opened her eyes again, she was met with a somewhat familiar scene.
The dug-up mound of dirt, teammates organizing sleeping bags, and the locator on a sleeve.
Similarly, Extract’s memory faced another issue. She could even feel the warning sensation from her past memories slipping away as her awareness returned, as if it had all been a deep nightmare.
The ethereal feeling slipped away like sand between her fingers.
"What are you dazing about? Haven’t you packed up yet?"
Zheng Gaoya suddenly patted Extract’s shoulder.
"Captain."
Extract’s body jolted, and she turned to him, tentatively asking:
"Do you feel a bit tired?"
"Tired?"
Zheng Gaoya rotated his joints and stretched a bit before saying,
"Of course, everyone has hardly slept these past few days."
These past few days…
Extract suddenly looked up at the Captain:
"What day is it? How many days has it been since we set out?"
"Today is…"
Zheng Gaoya opened his mouth to answer, but it felt like something was stuck in his throat, preventing him from saying a word.
Extract’s question wasn’t quiet, and the other three heard her inquiry. After the Captain didn’t respond, they all began to think.
Then the problem arose.
They seemed… truly unable to remember what day it was.
In that moment, fear was visibly etched on everyone’s faces; even the strongest member of the team, who was known for being reserved, had faint red stripes appearing on the skin around his eyes—an expression of his unstable emotions.
"Food!"
Trace, who was standing nearby in a state of trembling fear, suddenly shouted:
"Quick, check how much food is left!"
Gangfeng quickly set down his backpack and frantically checked the remaining supply of nutritional paste inside.
Their memories might deceive them, but as long as they had strictly followed the food rationing rules during the journey, they could confirm the current time!
