Chapter 203: One-Time-Use Item
Fulan dashed through the streets of the inner city, appearing no different from an ordinary stray cat, save for her clear and determined destination.
The blood within her had begun to stir; though it couldn’t convey messages with perfect accuracy, it was enough for Fulan to sense her master’s summons.
Guided by that sensation, Fulan did not make her way to Lin Qingliu’s clinic.
The controller embedded within her still retained its positioning functions, and carrying out this task at her base would have been far too complicated.
After navigating a series of winding paths, Fulan arrived at a familiar location.
It was the Wager Chemical Factory, a place she had visited several times while surveilling Shi Jin. It was still daylight, and the massive factory, with its three above-ground floors and one below, stood completely deserted—an ideal spot for clandestine activities.
Upon reaching the rooftop, Fulan spotted Lin Qingliu clutching a large bundle of dry, yellow grass leaves.
“Master, did you summon me for something?”
Seeing Fulan approach, Lin Qingliu smiled:
“You’ve finally achieved advancement; otherwise, I wouldn’t have allowed you to venture beyond Hope City.
“But now that you’ve succeeded, we can start planning your departure from the city, and it’s time for that item to be returned to me.”
Fulan quickly grasped what Lin Qingliu was referring to.
It was the pendant, fused with her flesh, which she had been carrying around the city.
The flesh and skin around her neck twitched slightly, and soon the pendant was expelled.
Fulan handed it over to Lin Qingliu with a polite gesture, though she couldn’t help but voice her curiosity:
“Master, what exactly is this thing for?”
“This is a life-saving charm. It was originally designed for multiple uses, but now…”
Thinking of the inevitable uproar the disappearance of the Nian team would cause in both the inner city and beyond Hope City, Lin Qingliu clicked his tongue softly:
“It can only be used once now.”
He offered no further explanation, taking the pendant and pressing the command module against his forehead.
This was the only way to control it without embedding it within his body.
As Lin Qingliu focused his thoughts, a thin shield materialized in the air before him.
The shield bore a light purple tint, appearing as fragile as a soap bubble, though in reality, it was anything but.
The faint purple membrane gradually enveloped the dry yellow grass leaves, encasing them completely.
Then, the membrane began to tighten, slowly squeezing out the air trapped between the grass leaves.
Fulan observed the scene in silence, marveling at the pendant’s ability to unleash such power.
Yet… the shield seemed oddly familiar. Had she seen it somewhere before?
Hiss, where had she encountered it?
Fulan quickly recalled the memory she sought.
She had once seen Luke wield this very ability to capture Shi Jin.
So how had this power come into her master’s possession?
It seemed that he had also solidified his power within that pendant?
Truly terrifying, indeed—no wonder he is the master.
While Fulan was lost in her thoughts, Lin Qingliu had already completed the extraction.
With precise control of the shield, he had successfully cornered the will of the five Dummies and ultimately completed the cut.
The portion cut away was perhaps only one percent of the total; the remainder was excellent material that could be used for various purposes.
Lin Qingliu turned to see a shocked Fulan, who asked curiously:
“Master, why can it only be used once?”
“It’s simple. Even a pig should sense that something is wrong by now.”
*Beep, beep, beep.*
As he finished speaking, the pendant in his hand emitted a series of rapid sounds.
A few sparks danced, and the green light indicating everything was normal suddenly turned red, then the pendant was completely destroyed.
Fulan stared in surprise, momentarily speechless.
Lin Qingliu crushed the remnants of the pendant in his hand, quickly scooped up Fulan and the divided dry grass, and explained as he swiftly departed:
“Thanks to Mr. Luke for providing the materials for this experiment.
“Just now, our validation process reached a complete closure, confirming a fact: there was never any Holy Shield, or rather, whoever the council members want to be Holy Shield can be Holy Shield.
“This might be what his father wanted to tell me back then…
“Just watch, it won’t be long before a new ‘Holy Shield’ appears. Ha, how ridiculous.”
Fulan quietly nestled in Lin Qingliu’s arm without any reaction.
She could clearly sense that her master was not very happy; understanding the situation but lacking full human emotions, Fulan wasn’t quite sure how to respond.
Soon, the pair left the desolate, abandoned Chemical Factory.
As long as Lin Qingliu wanted to leave, no one could stop him.
Two minutes later, several figures descended from the sky, standing on the rooftop of the factory as they searched the area and ultimately discovered the crushed locator.
“Found it.”
“Have you scanned the surroundings?”
“Scanned, no suspicious animals detected.”
“Good, this counts as a gain. Let’s retreat; we are not the council’s cleaning crew.”
The clearly superpowered individuals searched the area once more and then floated away with the help of one of their own.
Inside the central spire, Nia sat slumped in a chair.
Without a doubt, the plan had failed.
Even if the plan hadn’t failed, when she pressed that red button which required three confirmations for final execution, it was doomed to fail.
Ever since the first night her signal was disrupted, it had become very difficult to precisely locate Luke—or rather, the locator’s position.
Nia had been particularly concerned about this in recent days, often searching for a signal but always coming up empty.
A thought was becoming clearer in her mind.
Though she was reluctant to admit it, and even more reluctant to believe it, that guy Luke might have already been taken out by something lurking in the shadows.
Such a pity.
Nia covered her face with her hand; clearly, Luke should have been driven by the flame of hatred, like her, burning himself until his last moment.
Even if the component group caused him a bit of harm, he should have at least lived another thirty years.
But now, it hadn’t even been three months, and only a handful of cases had been resolved, most of which others could handle.
Nia resented her own blindness even more than losing a trusted ally.
A few months ago, she had been so proud of her achievements, but now, after tasting failure, she had to relinquish the authority of the “Holy Shield” and could not interfere again for a while.
After sighing heavily for a while, she remembered another promising candidate.
That girl named Shi Jin; she hoped that she would not let her down.
