Chapter 185: Double Fishing
Fulan was deeply puzzled about the true nature of the pendant, yet she obediently allowed Lin Qingliu to place it around her neck.
“Don’t worry, it’ll be quick. It might sting a little.”
Lin Qingliu held back the eager Fulan, who was itching to go hunting in the wild, and activated the portion of his blood that lingered within her.
The dormant blood stirred to life and, under Lin Qingliu’s meticulous control, made a small incision on Fulan’s neck.
Out of trust and loyalty, Fulan chose not to voice her questions, letting Lin Qingliu insert a small fragment of the pendant beneath her skin.
Lin Qingliu then continued to manipulate the portion of his blood within Fulan’s body, sealing the wound and encasing the component, mimicking certain vital signs to deceive it.
Once everything was done, Lin Qingliu gently stroked the kitten’s back,
“All set. This time, make sure to roam far and wide while hunting in the wild. Don’t linger too long in one spot, and keep an eye out for anything suspicious, alright?
“Also, shift into something solid more often; otherwise, my little gift might slip out.”
“Fulan understands, but this thing feels like it’ll just hinder me~”
“What are you saying? How can you dismiss a gift from your master? You need to uncover its secrets.”
Lin Qingliu brushed off her concerns with a few casual words, gave her head a light pat, and signaled that it was time for her to leave.
The kitten adjusted to the slight discomfort around her neck, leaped out the window, and began another round of hunting in the wild.
Gazing at the empty windowsill, Lin Qingliu felt a swell of pride in his kitten’s ambition as he stepped forward to close the window.
He placed the final, difficult-to-separate parts of the ring-like component he had retrieved from Luke onto Fulan—these included the energy, remote control, and vital signs monitoring components.
Simultaneously, he began to use a small setup he had left behind to deceive the vital signs monitoring system.
This way, even if Luke’s disappearance was confirmed, the council could track the component, but Fulan’s identity and movements would lead them to dead ends.
They wouldn’t label Luke as missing; they might simply assume he was on a special mission.
By the time they caught on and started their pursuit, Fulan would have already circled Hope City several times.
During this process, being pursued by the council members’ subordinates might even help Fulan elevate her power level, making it a true win-win situation.
As he reveled in his clever plan, Lin Qingliu suddenly remembered another matter:
The One-Armed Blade, the second generation, was still locked up in a cage a few kilometers away.
He couldn’t let the hooked fish slip away.
—
“Did you make contact?”
“No, no signal. It shows unable to connect to the target.”
In a rented room, one man peered intently through a telescope while another fiddled with a standard communicator in his hand.
“What’s going on, Captain? It’s been four or five days, and still no word.”
“If you ask me, who should I ask? Maybe he’s on some secret mission.”
“But isn’t his task to catch the Heart Snatcher?”
“That’s our mission. The Captain is the new generation of Holy Shield; he can’t just be doing this little bit. I bet the council assigned him something more important.”
“You make a good point, but we’ve been on surveillance for several days now, and the Heart Snatcher still hasn’t shown up…
“If we follow the pattern from last time, with attacks occurring every six days, there might be movement tonight or tomorrow.”
“Come on, I think the Heart Snatcher decided to act because of the exploration team’s return broadcast. Just think about how excited we were when we heard that broadcast. Who would care about being under surveillance then?”
Another man nodded in agreement:
“That’s true. Let’s just focus on our job and continue with the surveillance task.”
The two men exchanged thoughts, but their gaze remained fixed on the distant horizon, unwavering.
Meanwhile, in the office of Luke’s deputy captain, a young man was equally entangled in his worries.
Unlike the informants below, as the deputy captain, he had more channels to contact Luke and needed to understand certain regulations in greater detail.
Four days without any news was absolutely unreasonable.
After much contemplation, he finally made up his mind.
Although it might cost him his job, this matter had to be reported to Senator Nia.
What if Captain Luke really was missing? What if?
A few hours later, after passing numerous checks, the deputy captain finally met Nia in a dim room within the spire.
This was his second time entering the spire, and it was his first time facing a senator directly.
The windowless room was shrouded in darkness, lit only by a light above his head.
In the shadows across from him, a figure with an obscured face and crossed legs was watching him intently.
The surrounding walls seemed to be made of metal, and just standing there felt immensely pressuring.
Forcing himself to quell his inner anxiety under the spotlight, the deputy captain spoke to the senator:
“Honorable Senator, Captain Luke has not been in contact since our last phone call five days ago, and his whereabouts remain unclear…”
He briefly recounted the events of the past few days, bowing his head as if prepared to accept punishment.
He was mentally prepared; if the captain was indeed on some secret mission, then his actions might just have sealed his own fate.
After all, every minute and second of a senator’s time is precious, and it should never be wasted on someone as insignificant as him.
Otherwise, no one could bear the wrath of a senator, unless they were another senator.
“Hmm, I understand.”
A reassuring female voice emerged from the shadows as she shifted her position in the darkness.
“Did Luke leave any instructions before he left?”
“Yes!”
The deputy captain was ready. He pulled out the communicator from his pocket and played the recording of their last conversation for Nia.
“Did you follow his orders?”
Hearing only a simple command to change the schedule, Nia couldn’t help but chuckle internally.
“We immediately followed the captain’s orders to revise the shift.”
“Good, that’s all. You’ve done well in following orders. Go back and ensure the team continues to run smoothly.”
“Understood.”
The deputy captain felt as if he had been granted a reprieve as he bowed and left the dim room.
As the heavy metal door slowly closed behind him, he let out a sigh of relief.
