Chapter 146: Isn’t this also a kind of breakthrough in the moment?

“Hope City Law Article 1229: Unregistered superpowered individuals whose crimes do not meet the criteria for ‘serious wrongdoing’ may have their punishment reduced or waived at discretion and may be assigned public service work.”

Fulan spoke earnestly; this was not a law she had fabricated but something clearly written in the documents in Zhuang Mian’s office.

The only issue was that because she hadn’t seen it clearly at the time, there were always a few awkward spots when she recited it.

Shi Jin listened quietly. Once Fulan finished reciting, she suddenly asked,

“Why haven’t I heard of this before?”

The revitalized Fulan showed a look of disdain:

“Did you ever know about this kind of information before?”

“…No.”

“Have you been inside here before?”

“…No.”

“Did you ever have superpowers?”

“…No.”

“Well then, that explains it.”

Fulan extended her paw forward. Shi Jin thought she was about to be reprimanded by her new boss and slightly shrank back, but to her surprise, Fulan simply patted her shoulder.

Although Shi Jin wasn’t particularly fond of being scolded by a boss or superior, perhaps because the little kitten in front of her was unfathomable, or perhaps because she had just added a significant amount of time to her own life, she didn’t feel uncomfortable with the superior disguised as a kitten at that moment.

“Okay, don’t be nervous. I thought the future would be bleak too…

“I can’t say too much, but, um, the Holy Fire Meow Meow Cult doesn’t pay salaries, offer bonuses, or provide material rewards… it’s just a pretty good place overall.”

Fulan had prepared a speech but forgot a good deal of it, almost digging a hole for herself to jump into.

Fortunately, superpowers were an undeniable benefit; just that one aspect already put them head and shoulders above all other jobs or organizations.

“Time is running out. Before those people come to take you away, it’s time to familiarize yourself with your abilities.”

A faint bluish light began to rise in the sky, and the not-so-bright morning light shone through the small iron window of Shi Jin’s little cell.

Shi Jin couldn’t focus on sleep; she tried to delve into her body with her mind, familiarizing herself with her abilities while anticipating a possibly bright future.

—

At six in the morning, Zhuang Mian, who was still in a sleepy state, slowly opened her eyes.

She quickly glanced at the alarm clock beside her, noticing that she had exactly ten minutes until the set time of six ten.

Feeling satisfied, she got out of bed, leaving her cozy blanket behind without a second thought.

Today was the day they had agreed upon; under no circumstances could it be delayed any longer.

Shi Jin’s interrogation records had filled an entire book, and the details of the crimes she had committed were something both she and the two clerks responsible for the records could recite effortlessly.

If they continued to interrogate, even a fool would be able to see something was off.

Zhuang Mian had made up her mind; regardless of how the situation unfolded, today was the final deadline.

She headed to the prison area with her two subordinates, bringing Shi Jin out of her cell for the last time.

As the prison door swung open, the three people were greeted by a figure with dark circles under their eyes, looking numb yet somewhat excited.

Everything visible in the room, from the simple bed board to the thin blanket stained with dirt, appeared as if it had endured an earthquake, placed in positions it shouldn’t be.

How should one put it?

It fit the mental state of someone on the last night before a trial perfectly.

One of the Clean-up Team members behind Zhuang Mian thought quietly.

“Captain Zhuang, I have new information to report.”

The shadow with dark circles suddenly spoke.

“It’s too late. Even if you can bite out ten people, it won’t matter now.”

Zhuang Mian’s attitude was completely genuine; she spoke in her regular serious tone and demeanor.

“It’s not a confession.”

Shi Jin suddenly interrupted Zhuang Mian:

“I seem to have… grasped some undefined power.”

With that, Shi Jin slightly hunched forward, and a silver light seemed to flash in her eyes.

As her ability activated, everything around Shi Jin entered slow motion, but she knew it was actually her reaction speed that had increased.

She stepped forward, feeling the air around her thicken and the weight of gravity decrease, as if she were a bird soaring toward freedom.

In the hours before Zhuang Mian’s arrival, she had begun to firmly grasp this power that belonged to her under Fulan’s guidance.

Although she still occasionally lost control, overall she had a basic understanding of her limits and how to activate her abilities.

Shi Jin could still see the look of astonishment gradually appearing on Zhuang Mian’s face and noticed the hands of the two Clean-up Team members slowly reaching for their waists.

Suddenly, her ability activated and then abruptly stopped. She crossed most of the cell’s length and appeared just twenty centimeters away from Zhuang Mian.

She didn’t choose to run; that would be the worst-case scenario, leading to the worst outcome.

Just under a second of using her ability had already made Shi Jin’s back sweaty.

She forced herself to avoid gasping for breath, which would be too embarrassing, while raising her hands to signal that she posed no danger as she looked at Zhuang Mian.

In the next moment, two dark gun barrels pointed at her head.

“Floor One, Area B needs immediate backup. Repeat, Floor One, Area B needs immediate backup.”

Unlike Zhuang Mian, who quickly regained her composure, one of the peace officers swiftly pulled out a communicator with his left hand, connecting with the outside of the prison area.

“This is… a superpower?”

Zhuang Mian began her performance, her expression genuinely convincing.

“Yes, I suddenly felt a warm flow roaming within my body in the middle of the night last night…”

Shi Jin began telling a nonsensical lie, while Zhuang Mian and the others listened intently. They had no way to prove it false since Shi Jin had undergone a full examination long before her arrest.

The only result from the examination was that she was a somewhat subhealthy ordinary human, with no connection to superpowered individuals.

Moreover, with the speed Shi Jin had just displayed, even Holy Shield himself would need to establish a larger space to capture her…

This was enough to indicate that she was at least an ordinary human before being captured by the Ministry of Internal Affairs…

Then, just three days later, she became a superpowered individual…

Could it be that the Ministry of Internal Affairs building was truly a valuable land?

Outside, reinforcements quickly arrived, a solid forty people blocking the hallway of the prison.

As Shi Jin looked at the sea of people, she felt that even if she could maximize her abilities, it would be impossible to escape.

Feeling the faint warmth on her wrist, Shi Jin revealed a confident smile and asked earnestly,

“Captain Zhuang, may I ask if this could reduce my sentence?”
