Chapter 14: The Right Way to High-Speed Regeneration
The extraordinary beasts seemed completely unprepared for the sudden emergence of new firepower; bullets pierced through their grotesque heads, forcing them to release the soldier’s calf and turn their furious gaze toward Wang Xiao.
Wang Xiao paid no heed; he steadied his grip on the gun and continued firing until the monster lay lifeless.
However, the beast’s movements did not cease. The other head still controlled its body; though its actions were slightly slower than before, its reaction speed remained superior to that of an average human.
The beast roared and lunged at him, one head gaping wide while the other hung limply at its chest.
Wang Xiao had no time to change magazines; as the beast pounced, it shoved his entire forearm into its mouth and then yanked hard, nearly tearing Wang Xiao’s whole left arm off.
Just as the beast prepared to tilt its head back and swallow, a deafening explosion erupted from its mouth. The eyes of the remaining head bulged and burst outward, while its upper and lower jaws appeared to be smashed apart, leaving its entire head riddled with holes.
It staggered for a moment, seemingly in disbelief, before collapsing to the ground.
Wang Xiao did not linger to admire his handiwork; he had already discarded his submachine gun when he lost his left arm and grasped the handle on the injured soldier again, pulling him backward.
The soldier, in extreme pain and shock, witnessed the entire process of the beast’s death. He touched his waist instinctively and realized one of his grenades was missing.
Confused, he turned his head to see blood gushing from Wang Xiao’s torn arm, and he watched as new flesh began to grow in place of the lost arm within seconds, quickly forming a brand new, pinkish-white arm that squirmed like bamboo shoots after rain.
“You’re a superpowered individual?”
He instinctively asked this question that didn’t need an answer.
Wang Xiao shook his arm and did not respond, instead reaching around the soldier’s waist to grab the remaining grenades, rushing back to the retreating battlefield.
Today’s small beast tide was not very large; although the defense line had collapsed, there were still fewer than a hundred extraordinary beasts climbing the city wall. It was merely humanity’s insufficient preparations that caused them to retreat step by step.
On the front wall from which humanity was retreating, many surviving soldiers continued to crawl backward and resist.
Wang Xiao kept an eye on them as he swiftly grabbed another person and started to retreat again, transferring the injured soldier to a comrade before turning around to use the same tactic again.
Wang Xiao’s delicate, pale arm appeared tempting to the extraordinary beasts; they rushed toward him like fish to bait, each one attempting to bite down on his arm and the grenades he was carrying.
“Boom!”
“Boom!”
Grenades repeatedly exploded in the mouths of the beasts. Wang Xiao paid no attention to the astonished gazes of others as he ran along the lengthy front line, saving injured soldiers while obtaining more grenade supplies from them.
In the chaos of gunfire, he could even feel some friendly fire hit him, but injuries in battle were always inevitable, especially when everyone else was focusing on observation while he tried to take down enemies up close.
With the cooperation of other soldiers, Wang Xiao managed to kill nearly ten fast-moving leopard-type extraordinary beasts in just a few minutes, paying the cost of several lost arms and a few bullet wounds.
Only when he reached the other end of the front line did he realize he was clearly becoming exhausted.
Though his spirit remained high, his body felt unable to endure much more expenditure; he turned to look at the wounds on his arms, noticing that the regeneration speed had significantly slowed compared to earlier.
At this point, both of Wang Xiao’s hands had lost multiple limbs, his long sleeves since unbeknownst to him had long since remained inside some extraordinary beast’s belly.
But he had no intention of ending here; many spider-type extraordinary beasts were still fiercely battling humans. Those creatures didn’t seem very hungry, so that trick he just used probably wouldn’t work again.
Just as Wang Xiao was about to continue his slaughter, a blinding ray of sunlight suddenly shone down upon one of the spider-type extraordinary beasts.
The dazzling high-temperature light beam nearly melted the beast’s exoskeleton, exposing the boiling multicolored blood and various writhing tissues inside.
The beast let out a fierce roar and then struggled for a moment, as if it had its lungs burned out, before becoming motionless.
Wang Xiao looked up at the sky and saw a figure in a special combat suit floating in the air, seemingly guiding the beam of light to find something. Below, any extraordinary beast struck by that light beam quickly died.
Many soldiers and injured comrades instinctively glanced up at this high-and-mighty savior, but the blinding brilliance and surrounding danger quickly pulled their gaze back down.
Feeling revitalized, Wang Xiao noted that the reinforcements targeted the extraordinary beasts with exoskeletons, and he snatched two more grenades from injured soldiers to start his second round of fishing.
Minutes later, there wasn’t a single extraordinary beast left standing on the wall; soldiers began to form groups of three to finish off the barely alive creatures.
Wang Xiao returned to the initial section of his defense area, collapsing near the injured soldiers and gasping for air, while the reinforcements descended nearby, watching him with great interest.
“Direct Superpowered Group from the military headquarters, identification number 13052, codename ‘Fresnel.’”
The man extended his hand toward Wang Xiao and said with great curiosity,
“Let me touch this delicious prize that the extraordinary beasts were fighting over.”
Wang Xiao, out of breath, stood up and extended his soft, pale right hand to shake Fresnel’s hand.
“Medical Soldier from the Eastern Third Defense Team of outer city, Wang Xiao.”
Upon hearing this brief introduction, the superpowered individual in the special combat suit was instantly taken aback.
He scrutinized Wang Xiao from head to toe, especially focusing on his arms; while other Medical Soldiers had a clear red cross, Wang Xiao’s combat suit and vest had no markings at all.
“What’s your ability?”
He continued to inquire.
“Rapid Healing, rated E.”
Fresnel burst into laughter upon hearing this.
“The folks at the research institutes can sometimes be quite unreliable. Your ability rating is at least a D; it must be some sort of High-Speed Regeneration.”
After saying this, he added,
“But it’s not solely their fault. I remember two years ago, there was a fool who awakened a regeneration-type ability and insisted that the experimenters do something extreme. As a result, he lost an arm and couldn’t regrow it fast enough, leaving him stuck in limbo…
“After that, the researchers became much more cautious; they likely didn’t dare test your limits, fearing they might accidentally get you killed…”
