Chapter 5
The food tasted quite good. At least everyone at the table seemed satisfied. After a brief interruption, they refocused on eating.
Yun Chuyou truly enjoyed the joy that food brought her. As she happily bit into a piece of braised pork, the golden finger system suddenly activated and issued her a task:
[If you want to build a sect, you need to have a voice in it. The sect that the host is currently bound to does not belong to the host. Please replace Xie Fuzhi and become the current master of the Qingxu Sect.]
“Cough, cough, cough, cough!”
Yun Chuyou nearly choked on the meat. Xie Fuzhi looked at her with concern and pushed some of his meat into her bowl, saying, “Don’t rush. There’s plenty. I’ll save what the Master left for you; take your time.”
Meng He, who was happily eating, also paused and said with big puppy eyes, “Senior martial sister, you can have my share too.”
The scene at that moment was filled with kindness and warmth between master and disciple.
“I just choked a little, Meng He. You eat your own,” Yun Chuyou said, not wanting to eat food touched by someone else.
She was still startled by the system’s task. In that brief moment, a flood of dark thoughts surged through her mind. Was the system asking her to kill her master?
Even though she knew she was now a character in a story—a melodramatic one, at that—she did have a fleeting moment of wanting to harm her master. But until Xie Fuzhi truly destroyed the world, Yun Chuyou could never bring herself to do such a thing.
Over the years, she had come to feel that the people around her were real, living beings. The emotions built through countless little moments couldn’t simply be dismissed just because this was “a book.”
Xie Fuzhi wasn’t just an NPC; he was far more complex than his depiction in the original story. In fact, ever since she became the Elder Martial Sister of this sect, the storyline had started to shift.
She glanced at the younger martial sister who had just joined the sect that day and casually asked, “Master, when you were recruiting disciples, did you come across any outstanding talents on the Immortal Ascending Platform?”
Where there are villains, there are also protagonists. The main character of this book, like the malicious female supporting character, first appeared on the Immortal Ascending Platform. Zhong Wei, the significant supporting antagonist, made her entrance in stark contrast to the main character.
Zhong Wei was filthy, a much-despised little beggar. Ordinary people and wandering cultivators seeking opportunities pushed her aside, their words of dismissal were considered mild compared to the harsher treatment she endured. Her poor talent and foul mood only made matters worse. When cultivators saw her blocking their way, they would angrily kick her out of their group.
In contrast, the main character, a beautifully refined figure, seemed like a celestial child. She lived in a mortal city near Lianyun Mountain, home to many friends and relatives of cultivators. Some of these people had poor Spiritual Roots and couldn’t progress past the Foundation Establishment stage. Weak Qi Refining cultivators were barely different from ordinary warriors.
In such situations, cultivators would often send their relatives to cities like these. The cultivation world was harsh and unforgiving. While Spirit Qi in mortal cities was thin, at least their loved ones could enjoy a life of luxury and comfort.
The main character was the treasured daughter of the wealthiest man in the city. Following the recommendation of her elders, she first went to the Beast Control Sect for testing. The results revealed that she possessed an extraordinary Heavenly Spiritual Root—a rare and highly pure mutated form of it.
This discovery caused a sensation at the Immortal Ascending Platform. The leader of the Tianheng Sect, one of the most prestigious sects in the cultivation world, immediately claimed her and summoned his sect’s elders to compete for her inclusion.
The Beast Control Sect stood no chance against the Tianheng Sect’s influence. The main character’s future master was a powerful cultivator at the Soul Changing Stage, one of the highest levels of power in the cultivation world. The old monsters at the Transcendency Stage rarely meddled in worldly affairs, so for now, the Soul Changing Stage represented the pinnacle of fighting strength.
This stark contrast naturally ignited envy in Zhong Wei. Over time, that envy would evolve into intense jealousy.
One was adored by all, while the other was shunned by everyone. The main character had countless admirers, including the man Zhong Wei secretly loved. Yet that man never once looked at her. Instead, he revolved around the beloved main character like a devoted moon orbiting its sun.
Xie Fuzhi thought for a moment before saying, “There was a disciple with dual Spiritual Roots for fire who went to Tianjing Sect.”
Cultivators at the Nascent Soul Stage had sharp senses, able to perceive events from great distances. They knew exactly what unfolded on the Immortal Ascending Platform.
However, Yun Chuyou was certain that Xie Fuzhi wasn’t referring to the main character. Her presence was unmistakable, and the description of the Spiritual Root didn’t match.
“Is it a man or a woman? Are they good-looking?” she asked, trying to confirm.
“It’s a man, and no, he’s not good-looking at all,” Xie Fuzhi replied with some irritation. “Chuyou, have you forgotten your ideals? What did you say before? You wanted to ascend. You’re still young and shouldn’t let trivial feelings distract you from your path.”
Even the gender didn’t match.
Xie Fuzhi added, “Master was concerned that your Transmigration might not go smoothly. That’s why he brought your younger martial sister back so quickly and didn’t get to see what happened afterward.”
After receiving his scolding, Yun Chuyou wasn’t upset. She realized she had disrupted the original storyline, which meant Zhong Wei hadn’t made a strong impression on the main character as written in the book. Without a personal encounter, Zhong Wei wouldn’t have developed such intense jealousy.
After all, out of sight, out of mind. Hearing exaggerated stories from others was entirely different from experiencing something firsthand. Tales could feel distant and unreal, and their impact was far less profound than facing events directly.
Of course, being lovestruck can be frightening too; if the female supporting character becomes crazily infatuated with the main character’s admirer, she might lose control and turn dark.
But that is a matter for the future, and no one can say for sure; at least for now, everything has started well, and that is all thanks to Master’s care for me.
The girl flashed a smile brighter than a sunflower and actively served a piece of fish belly to Xie Fuzhi, “The meat of the fish belly is tender; I give this to you, Master.”
Then she served a piece of meat to her younger martial sister, “Eat more meat.”
“Now that we have more people in our sect, we can’t develop like we did before,” Yun Chuyou said after finishing half a bowl of rice. “Master, you are the leader of our sect; you can’t just ignore things.”
Becoming the leader of the sect was the main task issued by the system. Anyone who has played games knows that if you don’t progress with the main task, there won’t be any future tasks, and you won’t receive the rewards provided by the system.
She didn’t care about the useless supplies, but she was deeply concerned about the system’s ultimate reward—successfully ascending and opening a time-space rift to return home. If Xie Fuzhi relinquished his position and allowed someone else to take over, she should be able to complete the task.
Yun Chuyou hadn’t even directly asked for the position of leader, yet Xie Fuzhi frowned and declared, “From today onward, I will no longer serve as the leader. I hereby announce that Chuyou will officially take over as the leader of the Qingxu Sect, while I assume the role of Supreme Elder, tasked with overseeing the sect.”
The system remained silent, and Yun Chuyou asked, “Is it enough just to announce it like this?”
Even though their sect had few members, they should still follow the proper steps.
Xie Fuzhi took out a small and exquisite leader’s badge from his bag and said, “Hold this. After dinner, I will go inform the previous leaders about this.”
There were only four disciples in the sect; the other three had just joined this year. Even if they wanted power, they had no support, and they didn’t think they could surpass Yun Chuyou to become the leader of the Qingxu Sect.
Qingxu Sect was so poor that being the leader brought a lot of worry. Fighting over such a small amount of resources would be foolish.
The moment the leader’s badge was in hand, the system’s voice sounded.
[Task detection complete. Congratulations to the host for successfully becoming the leader of the Qingxu Sect! Rewards: 10 Building Foundation Pills, 10 disciple robes, 10 ordinary-quality long swords, and Energy-Boosting Pills (capable of increasing cultivation by 1,000 points). Additionally, the leader gains double cultivation benefits for one hour each day.]
Yun Chuyou’s smile became even brighter. According to the rewards from the system, as long as she helped the sect grow, she might really succeed in ascending.
After the meal, everyone was happy.
When there was only a pile of greasy plates and fish bones left on the table, Zhong Wei was the first to stand up from her seat and offered to help the newly promoted Elder Martial Sister, “Elder Martial Sister, you worked hard cooking. Let me wash the dishes.”
In ordinary families in the Mortal World, many girls marry at thirteen or fourteen. Although nine years old is not too young, it is also an age where children can do a lot of work.
Zhong Wei was mistreated since she was young and had to be independent. She may be small, but she can do many household chores.
Today, after joining the sect, she couldn’t do anything for the others and felt quite uneasy. She was eager to show herself, afraid that Yun Chuyou would think she was not valuable, and find an excuse to expel her from the sect.
“Wash the dishes? You don’t need to wash them.” Yun Chuyou waved a Cleaning Spell, and the pile of greasy dirty dishes became clean again.
Although the cultivation world lacks technological advancements, spells are still incredibly useful. Small spells that conserve energy, offer convenience and enhance daily life are the ones Yun Chuyou relies on the most.
“Oh, you should put your bowl away. From now on, it will be your special bowl.”
Yun Chuyou explained, “Today we eat together for the welcome dinner, but in the future, we will have separate meals. Before you join, come to the kitchen to get your food when it’s mealtime.”
In the past, the master and apprentice relied on each other. Xie Fuzhi did not mind her, and she respected her teacher and could not look down on him. Now things are different; there are more people in the sect, and they cannot go down the mountain alone for training anytime soon, so separate meals are more suitable.
The two junior brothers weren’t human. What if their saliva was poisonous to a human cultivator like her? It was better to prioritize cleanliness and hygiene.
In the sect, Elder Martial Sister makes all the small decisions, while Xie Fuzhi, as the master, only says, “What Elder Martial Sister says is right” and “Listen to Chuyou.” Now, even the position of leader has been given to Yun Chuyou by Xie Fuzhi as if it were a piece of candy.
So, what Yun Chuyou said was just a notice, not asking for others’ opinions.
After they finished eating and drinking, the sky grew dark. Meng He guided Yu Jiu back to her room, while Yun Chuyou handed some supplies for the new disciples to Zhong Wei.
She thought the female supporting character was love-struck and simply had too much free time. She let them rest for the last day today, but starting tomorrow, she would have them all practice diligently!
“Achoo achoo achoo!”
As he was pushing his Second Junior Brother back to the room, Meng He suddenly sneezed several times. He hurriedly tossed Yu Jiu onto the bed, quickly covered his face, and rushed outside.
The Second Junior Brother is very sick, and he doesn’t want to get infected and end up like the others who are also sick.
Yu Jiu: …
It was late at night, and he didn’t want to move, so he didn’t even turn on the light.
But in the middle of the night, he woke up from a dream, disturbed by Meng He’s disgusted expression. No, it seemed like everyone in this sect was sick!
