Chapter 12
When Yun Chuyou brought Yu Jiu back, she casually went to the back of the courtyard to feed the captured demon beast. Looking at the dark room, she realized Meng He had not yet returned.
It’s strange. Meng He did not climb the mountain slowly, and when he came back, he didn’t fight with Yu Jiu. Why is he still outside now?
Although the system works sometimes and sometimes does not, the map feature is quite useful. The disciples of Qingxu Sect all appear as little green dots on the unlocked map.
Master Xie Fuzhi is at the top of the mountain, and Zhong Wei and Yu Jiu are near her. It is easy to find Meng He’s little green dot on the map.
The little green dot is not moving quickly; it seems to have stopped between the peaks for some reason.
There is a path on the map, but the place where Meng He is located is not a big road that an unskilled person could climb. It is an open space that is not even a small path in the jungle.
Why doesn’t he come back at night? Why is he going deep into the forest? Did he encounter some danger, or did something unexpected happen?
The story in the book is centered around the main character Song Mingzhu. It describes her growth after joining the sect and every person and opportunity she encounters, but it does not focus much on the details of other supporting characters.
Moreover, the Meng He now is quite different from the description in the book. I don’t know if he regained his memory after growing up or if he learned to be more cautious because of Yu Jiu’s tricks.
Yun Chuyou glanced at the night sky, where a bright moon hung high, casting its gentle light on the ground. However, the moonlight is not as bright as the sunlight, and the dancing shadows of the trees create many dark corners where dirt can gather and hide.
The Congyun Mountains are much more dangerous at night. The hissing poisonous snakes and insects are more active, and many demon beasts come out to hunt.
Yun Chuyou has only been in the sect for ten years, but this mountain range has existed for thousands of years. Even when the disciples of Qingxu Sect were still here, they could not say they had completely cleaned the entire mountain range.
When both people and money are gone, the protective barrier that covers the entire area is usually not active. Only a small area where the sect is located has a barrier. After all, their sect only has a few people, so they cannot watch every corner. This means that any stray creature can enter the mountain.
There may be risks in the deep mountains that even Meng He cannot handle. After all, although he possesses a Demon Bone, his cultivation has dropped greatly, and now he is only at the mid-Foundation Establishment Stage. If he encounters a powerful demon beast, he will still be in danger.
Changing the subject, Yun Chuyou followed the direction of the map and flew through the air on her sword. In just a moment, she got closer and closer to that small green dot.
She used her sword to cut away some branches and finally saw a familiar figure. The girl’s pupils shrank; Meng He was sitting on the ground, his face bruised and his disciple’s white robe splattered with blood.
The mottled bloodstains added a more brutal, beast-like quality to his already wild face. His eyes dimly glowed with a hint of red, as if he might burst into a rage and leap to bite her throat at any moment.
Yun Chuyou was very clear in her mind: demons are creatures that are naturally drawn to killing.
"Elder Martial Sister?…"
Hearing the noise, Meng He’s body tensed up. He instinctively bent his back, getting into a fighting stance, but when he saw the familiar face, he suddenly relaxed. His body went soft, and his knee couldn’t support his weight, causing him to fall backwards.
He was tough and strong, so falling down didn’t hurt him much, but a gentle hand caught him in time, making him feel like he was dropping into a soft cloud as he slowly sat down on the ground.
This familiar touch made Meng He smile wide, showing his bright white teeth. There were still traces of blood on his face, which made his smile seem a bit eerie, "Elder Martial Sister, why are you here? Did you come to find me?"
Yun Chuyou came back to herself and looked down, saying, "I took Yu Jiu back to the sect, and when I didn’t see you, I became worried that you might be in danger, so I came to check on you."
Meng He immediately lit up with a bright smile, but then he suddenly asked, "Elder Martial Sister, were you just scared for me?"
He said this in a low voice, like a heavy stone resting on his heart, making him feel sad and uneasy. Memories of countless afraid faces and scared eyes rushed back to him.
Yun Chuyou replied naturally, "Yes."
"I was afraid that I was too late and you were gone."
Meng He’s heart, which had been hurt, suddenly felt lighter. He knew that Elder Martial Sister wasn’t afraid for herself; she was worried about him!
The girl’s fingers, as white and delicate as jade, brushed across the blood on the little demon’s face, immediately staining them with a bit of bright red, "What happened to the blood on your face?"
Meng He wiped his face with his sleeve and saw a sleeve full of blood, "Ah, this isn’t my blood."
He had indeed used a lot of strength, but in front of Elder Martial Sister, he refused to show any weakness, "This is all the blood from that wild boar; I’m not hurt!"
In reality, he had suffered a few injuries because the wild boar was not an ordinary beast but the fierce Wild Boar King, with a strength equivalent to the early stage of the Golden Core Stage in demon cultivation.
For a golden core cultivator like Yun Chuyou, who was a sword cultivator focused on killing, defeating a Wild Boar King was not difficult. However, Meng He was only in the mid-stage of Foundation Establishment and was not skilled in magic; he relied only on his bare fists without even a weapon.
He had stayed here for so long because he was exhausted and needed time to recover from his injuries. However, by the time Yun Chuyou arrived, thanks to the demon’s much stronger recovery ability compared to human cultivators, Meng He’s fist wounds had healed completely without even a scar, allowing him to claim he wasn’t injured.
"Hmm, I see, you are not hurt." Meng He’s face was smeared with blood, but there were no wounds on it, and the foul smell was all from the demon beast.
Yun Chuyou then asked, "Did that demon beast escape, or did it die?"
"It’s dead! I won!"
Meng He caught his breath as a large, pitch-black wild boar fell out of the storage bag, creating a deep pit in the ground. Its fur was sharp like spikes, shining with a metallic glint in the faint moonlight.
The blood and flesh of demon beasts attract others of their kind, and fearing it might lure in other dangerous creatures, Meng He used his limited spiritual power to store the massive Wild Boar King in the storage bag after the battle.
"Senior martial sister, look, this is the demon beast!"
The boy’s eyes sparkled with excitement, as if a big tail was wagging behind him. Though he didn’t say it outright, his eyes clearly expressed, "Aren’t I amazing? Aren’t I smart? Please praise me!"
Yun Chuyou focused her thoughts and reached out to pat Meng He’s head. His hair was not soft; it was coarse and rough, not pleasant to touch. She gave it a gentle pat and withdrew her hand, saying, "Very impressive."
She stored all the prey in the storage bag; the skin, bones, and sharp tusks of the demon beast were all excellent materials, but now was not the right time to deal with them.
Yun Chuyou pulled Meng He up and flew back along the illuminated main road, then asked about what had happened, "How did you encounter this demon beast on the main road?"
There are indeed many uncleaned demon beasts in the deep mountains, but it shouldn’t be this dangerous along the main road.
Meng He felt a bit guilty and said, "I didn’t see it on the main road. I just thought of it when I saw the demon beast, thinking it could sell for a good price."
When he returned, he was indeed on the main path, but halfway through, he was attracted by a beautiful butterfly. The light blue butterfly, called the Ghost Butterfly, had a natural charm for demons, just like catnip for cats and meat bones for dogs.
However, if he said he got off track because he was trying to catch the butterfly, Elder Martial Sister would definitely look down on him and scold him.
Yun Chuyou noticed Meng He’s uneasiness; the little expression of sweat on his forehead had already revealed his true feelings.
But she did not expose Meng He’s lie, "It’s rare that you are so sensible, so let’s consider this demon beast as the sect’s asset, and it will be counted as your contributions and points."
After briefly explaining the contribution system, Yun Chuyou continued, "You have delayed for so long on the road; you still need to copy the sect rules one hundred and fifty times."
Initially, she planned to excuse Meng He from copying the sect rules because of this demon beast, but since he lied, he still had to copy them.
Meng He responded with an "Oh" and agreed right away, "I will copy them."
Elder Martial Sister took the initiative to turn back and specifically came to pick him up. She even patted his head and did not mind that he ran around at night, which made Meng He very happy.
With his mood improved, the daunting task of copying the sect rules one hundred and fifty times seemed much lighter.
"Goo goo…"
Someone’s stomach grumbled loudly. Even though Meng He had eaten a lot of food down the mountain, the earlier fight had taken away a lot of his energy. Now, not only did he have little spiritual power inside him, but the food in his belly had also been completely used up.
"Here, eat this." Yun Chuyou conjured up a roasted chicken that was still steaming.
Meng He looked surprised, "Isn’t that for Master?"
"Yes, but you’re hungry, so I’ll let you eat it first. I wouldn’t want you to be so hungry at night that you can’t sleep and start running around." Yun Chuyou’s eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief, "If you don’t tell, I won’t tell, and Master won’t know."
"Wow!" Meng He took a big bite of the chicken, feeling that the chicken leg he had taken from Master tasted even better than the fresh ones he had just eaten in the shop.
If he had a tail, it would be wagging like a spinning propeller right now.
This time, Yun Chuyou worried there might be another problem along the way. After ensuring Meng He’s belly was full, she took him directly back to his place. She watched through the window as he frowned and chewed on the end of his pencil before she left.
The roasted chicken was gone, but the braised Fire Sparrow eggs and Osmanthus Wine were still there. Originally planning to summon a crane, she thought for a moment and decided to go to the mountain top to deliver the special food she had reserved for Master Xie Fuzhi herself.
