Chapter 59: “What’s Wrong With The Protagonist? Even The Protagonist Can’t Afford This!”
“Trash big brother??” Pete got out of bed and looked around, seemingly anxious to find someone, so much so that he even ignored Winnie’s taunts.
“Who are you looking for, you little brat? Stop looking, it’s just the two of us here,” Winnie said with a laugh.
“That… that pink-haired big sister who treated me, where is she?” Pete still seemed unwilling to give up.
“Her? She left a long time ago,” Winnie rolled his eyes.
“It was already a big deal to get her to come treat you. She’s a very busy person, you know. Did you really expect her to wait around for you to wake up?”
“She’s gone??” Pete’s face fell, and he lowered his head, feeling a void in his heart.
“Of course she’s gone. What else would she do, stay here?”
“Why do you care so much about her? Don’t tell me… huh, you little brat, give it up. There’s no way someone like her would ever like a lazy, good-for-nothing kid like you,” Winnie teased, seeing Pete’s dejected expression and putting on a mocking tone.
“You! Ugh, trash big brother!” Hearing this, Pete jumped up like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.
He stuck out his tongue at Winnie, then seemed to remember something and awkwardly averted his gaze.
“Big brother, what’s the name of that pink-haired big sister?”
“Huh?” Winnie wondered if he had misheard.
This little brat always called him “trash” or something similar, but this time he was being so polite.
Clearly, he wanted something.
Seeing Pete’s awkward demeanor, Winnie suddenly had a bad feeling.
Wait, he had just been teasing the kid earlier.
Could it be that…?
“Why do you want to know?” Winnie asked, glancing sideways at Pete.
“I… I just want to know, okay?!”
“Sorry, but I promised her I wouldn’t tell anyone about her,” Winnie shrugged.
“That’s her wish. If you keep pushing, you’ll only make things difficult for her, you know?”
“Ugh!” Those words completely shut down any further arguments Pete might have had.
He could only mumble reluctantly, “Then… did that big sister leave any message for me?”
“Nope, not a single word,” Winnie glanced at Pete.
“Alright, little brat, time to go.”
“Go where?” Pete looked utterly lost.
His mind was completely occupied by the memory of the stunning pink-haired girl and her gentle smile.
Her motherly warmth and kindness still lingered in his thoughts, refusing to fade.
“Are you still half-asleep? Back to the orphanage, of course. Where else would you go?” Winnie said impatiently.
“Do you even know how long you’ve been asleep? The old director and your little friends must be worried sick about you.”
“Let’s go, let’s go. This isn’t a hotel, you know. I can’t let you stay here for free,” Winnie said, pulling Pete, who was still in a daze, out of the courtyard.
Glancing at Pete, who was letting himself be dragged along like a puppet, Winnie felt a bit speechless.
The physical illness might have been cured, but now he had a new problem, a psychological one.
And that was something Winnie couldn’t fix.
“Here you go, Director. The kid’s all better now.”
“Thank you so much for your generous help!” The old director grasped Winnie’s hand, deeply grateful.
“Please also thank your friend for me.”
“No need for thanks. To be honest, this was the first time my friend has ever treated someone, so there’s no guarantee it would work,” Winnie waved his hand dismissively.
“The reason he got better in just one day, I suspect, is that the kid wasn’t really that sick to begin with. He was probably just faking it,” Winnie poked Pete’s head.
“Ouch! You annoying trash big brother!” Pete, who had been lost in thought, suddenly snapped out of it and glared at Winnie.
“Regardless, we are extremely grateful for everything you’ve done for our orphanage.”
“I already said there’s no need to thank me. Alright, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be on my way,” Winnie gave Pete’s hair one last ruffle and turned to leave.
But as soon as he turned around, he found himself staring into a pair of violet eyes.
The shimmering silver hair, the familiar and flawless face, these were things that often appeared in Winnie’s nightmares.
The blood-stained beauty would look down at him with a smile, holding a bloodied sword, while he lay on the ground, a corpse slowly losing its warmth.
“……”
Winnie froze in place, his heart racing.
Oh no, oh no!
Why did I have to run into her here?!
“Lord Winnie, it’s been a while, hasn’t it~?” Just as Winnie was unsure whether to greet her or not, the silver-haired girl raised her hand and spoke first.
Aesphyra’s lips curled into a charming smile, her stunning beauty effortlessly captivating those around her, making them feel as though she was smiling just for them, as if she might even like them.
But Winnie didn’t dare entertain such thoughts.
“Ah, oh, yeah, it’s been a while,” Winnie replied stiffly, raising his hand like a mechanical cat.
“Forgive me for not being prepared. After all, running into you here was quite unexpected,” Aesphyra said, her violet eyes narrowing like a delicate doll’s, her words carrying a deeper meaning.
“Yeah, I didn’t expect it either,” Winnie muttered, averting his gaze.
If possible, he really didn’t want to have any contact with Aesphyra.
She was the protagonist of the original story, a walking harbinger of misfortune.
While she herself never came to harm, those around her always ended up suffering.
Other “chosen ones” were one thing, he could afford to mess with them a bit, especially someone like Julliana, whom he’d only meet once and never see again.
He could take advantage of them as much as he wanted, no harm done.
But Aesphyra was different. Her “advantages” were something Winnie didn’t dare covet, afraid that getting involved would mean no turning back.
Damn it, why did I have to run into her here?
Winnie avoided looking into Aesphyra’s eyes, which seemed to radiate some kind of magical power.
That said, compared to before, his fear of Aesphyra had lessened somewhat.
His confidence came from his increased strength.
In the past, if Aesphyra had wanted to attack him, Winnie wouldn’t have even dared to think about resisting.
But now, he at least had some ability to fight back, not much, but it was something.
If she really wanted to go all out, he could just shout, “Vanessa, save me!”
So what if she’s the protagonist of the original story?
This is the [Flames of Ten Thousand Divine Blessings], something even the protagonist can’t handle!
Of course, these thoughts were just to boost his courage.
Compared to what Aesphyra had, his abilities were nothing.
She was the true, one-and-only cheat character.
For example, one of the five-star Soul Armament, of which there were only a handful in the entire continent, was Aesphyra’s innate Soul Armament. And the sacred blessing of the ancient imperial family, the Carillian, was related to time and space…
So Winnie knew very well that even if Vanessa stepped in, she could only hold Aesphyra off for a little while.
If it came down to a real fight, the [Flames of Ten Thousand Divine Blessings] might not even have a chance to activate before Vanessa was pinned to the ground by Aesphyra.
