Chapter 12: Don’t Let Me Down
Winnie opened his personal status through the virtue panel.
Name: Winnie Varelis
Soul Art: [Armor Fortress] (High armor, reduced agility)
Root Soul Art: Unawakened
Sacred Blessing: Unawakened
Soul Art Level: Beginner Initiate
When his gaze shifted to the Soul Art Level section, Winnie remembered that Soul Art realms are divided into levels.
From low to high, they are: Initiate, Apprentice, Artisan, Warlock, Master, Grandmaster, Infernal, and Immortal.
Each realm is further divided into three stages: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Currently, having just absorbed his Soul Art, he is naturally at the Beginner Initiate stage.
When he saw the Root Soul Art section, Winnie was surprised because Root Soul Arts are something only Saint Families possess.
As a dead lineage, his Root Soul Art is not ‘None’, but ‘Unawakened’, which puzzled him.
The same goes for the Sacred Blessing, which is also unawakened.
If he were to awaken his family’s bloodline, would these two sections unlock?
If Winnie remembers correctly, the Varelis family is the inheritor of the [Blessed Angel] bloodline, with Sacred Blessings being [Flawless Holy Feathers] and [Flames of Ten Thousand Divine Blessings].
Winnie isn’t entirely sure about the specific effects of [Flawless Holy Feathers].
Due to the fact that in “The Carillian Citrus,” Winnie, the sole heir of the Varelis family, is a dead lineage cannon fodder, the Varelis family unsurprisingly became the least noticeable Saint Family, existing only in the background from the beginning to the end of the story.
This is quite normal, as in the original work, Winnie’s death symbolizes the complete extinction of the Varelis family.
From then on, the Goddess of Graceful Radiance and the successive Radiance Saintness live only in history books, and the Sacred Blessings of Varelis are buried under the sands of time, with only the still active [Saint Envoy] Soul Art proving that this family once existed.
As for [Flames of Ten Thousand Divine Blessings], Winnie knows a bit more about this Sacred Blessing, mainly because its setting is overwhelmingly powerful.
According to the original setting, [Flames of Ten Thousand Divine Blessings] is not an ordinary fire; it is the companion flame of the Blessed Angel, purifying the heavens and earth, annihilating evil, capable of nullifying any magic and converting it into fuel for its own flames.
Moreover, it is the only Sacred Blessing in the game that can ignore all resistances and enchantment protections.
Whether living or dead, anything that touches it will be completely purified.
Many past Demon Kings have perished under [Flames of Ten Thousand Divine Blessings], earning it a reputation of being highly effective with no repeat customers.
Its fame is widely known; humans know it’s powerful but can’t quite explain why, but demons certainly understand.
This is the ultimate weapon that makes those arrogant demon families tremble in fear.
Unfortunately, this universally acknowledged ultimate weapon exists only in the background of the original work.
Apart from the flame left by the Goddess of Graceful Radiance at the headquarters of the Church, it has never made an appearance.
If he could actually summon [Flames of Ten Thousand Divine Blessings], it would be something beyond his wildest dreams…
For a moment, Winnie’s desire to awaken his family’s bloodline surged.
However, Winnie noticed another point.
If he remembers correctly, there’s something quite peculiar about the Varelis family.
The first Varelis was known as the Goddess of Graceful Radiance, and her descendants were the successive Radiance Saintness, leading the Church of Radiance and its followers.
That’s right, only Saintness, no Holy Sons.
According to records, each Radiance Saintness shares the same characteristics as the Goddess of Graceful Radiance, all having peach-pink hair and cherry blossom heart-shaped pupils.
It’s not strange for the characteristics to be the same, as in the setting, the genes of Saint Families are very strong, not just in the Varelis family but in all Saint Families.
The strange thing is, after so many generations of the Varelis lineage, why has there never been a Holy Son, only Holy Daughters??
Could it be that the Varelis family can only give birth to girls and not boys??
But then again, this is a fantasy magic world, so having such peculiar settings isn’t out of place.
Yet, why is it that starting from his grandfather’s generation, there have been three consecutive generations of boys?
And coincidentally, during these three generations, the Sacred Blessings disappeared, the distinctive traits vanished, and the lineage completely became a dead one.
Could it be that the Varelis genes have an issue with expression?
That the most crucial part of the genes becomes recessive in males and only manifests in females??
This seems quite plausible.
But if that’s the case, how can he awaken his family’s bloodline?
No matter how he awakens it, it won’t change the fact that he’s a man, right?
He doesn’t know. For now, he can only take one step at a time.
Until he accumulates enough virtue, he has no idea what the future holds.
With this thought, he extinguished the candle, but he didn’t plan to go straight to sleep.
Instead, he sat by the bed, calmly gazing at the courtyard under the moonlight, legs crossed.
After a long while, a suspicious black shadow appeared in the courtyard.
He had finally waited for it.
A slight smile curled on Winnie’s lips as he grabbed Dak’s tail, though he didn’t intend to follow him just yet.
He only wanted to confirm that Dak was indeed up to some shady business behind his back.
As for following him to investigate further?
Winnie still valued his life.
He didn’t know who was so bored as to plant a spy around him, a harmless dead lineage, but recklessly advancing without knowing the other party’s identity would be extremely dangerous.
His intuition told him that the person, or rather, the force, monitoring him in the shadows was no ordinary entity.
At the very least, it wasn’t something he, with his limited strength, could confront head-on.
Therefore, he absolutely couldn’t let them sense that he had already detected their spy.
Cornered dogs will jump over walls, and it would be all too easy for them to deal with someone as isolated as him.
On the other hand, Dak, cloaked in black, tiptoed out of the courtyard gate.
Although he didn’t think that idiot playboy Winnie could possibly notice his movements, it was still better to be cautious.
As usual, he arrived at the meeting spot.
After successfully exchanging the code, a tall, cloaked man emerged from the shadows of the street corner.
“Greetings, sir,” Dak quickly bowed.
“You’ve moved up the meeting time. I assume you have some important information, correct?” The man’s voice was muffled, making it hard to discern its tone.
Upon closer inspection, one would notice he wore a mask, concealing his face.
“Yes, that’s right,” Dak respectfully relayed the news of Winnie’s intention to dismiss him that day.
“……You’re saying that idiot young master wants to fire you?” After a long pause, the man spoke.
“Yes, he went to the palace again today. It’s still unclear what he did there, but he came back in a rage. Perhaps it’s because of what happened before, or maybe… he’s noticed something suspicious about me?……”
“Did I allow you to speculate?” Before Dak could continue, the man shot him a sharp glance, causing Dak to immediately lower his head in fear.
“My apologies, sir!”
“That good-for-nothing waste was recently rejected by Her Highness the Princess. It’s only natural for him to vent his anger on those weaker than him. That’s entirely in line with his character,” the man analyzed calmly.
Hearing this, Dak was slightly surprised by the man’s judgment but didn’t dare to say more.
“So, sir, what about me?”
“The only surviving member of the Varelis family has fallen to such a state. I think continuing to monitor him is a complete waste of resources.”
“As for you, as agreed, you will get what you desire.”
“Th-thank you, sir!” Dak couldn’t contain his joy upon hearing this.
After all the risks he had taken and the long wait, wasn’t this the moment he had been striving for??
“Then, sir, where will you take me to treat my hidden ailment?” Dak believed the man before him had the means, after all, they were…
“You don’t need to go anywhere.” With that, the man turned around.
The joy on Dak’s face instantly turned to pale horror as he stared in disbelief at the holy cross-shaped sword piercing through his chest.
In an instant, his breath was filled with the choking taste of blood.
He was impaled by countless holy swords.
The seemingly sacred swords had become the instruments of his death.
“Sir, you?……”
“Dak, I would have liked to let you live, but alas, I can’t guarantee that you would keep the secrets in your belly, can I?” the man said with a light chuckle.
“Only the dead can keep secrets forever.”
“This isn’t me breaking our agreement, though. After all, we agreed to use [Saint Envoy] to cure your ailment. This is also a technique of [Saint Envoy], so it counts as a cure, doesn’t it? Just not a healing spell, that’s all.”
“You… you bastard!…” Realizing he had been deceived, Dak glared at the man with furious eyes.
“What? A traitor who sold out his master for personal gain, do you even deserve to live?” the man said coldly.
Dak’s eyes grew vacant as he gradually lost consciousness.
His body was incinerated by the holy swords, turning into a pile of ashes that were swiftly carried away by the wind, leaving no trace behind.
“With so many eyes watching… Winnie Varelis, I hope you’re worth all this.”
“Don’t let me down,” the man murmured softly, before vanishing into the night with a flick of his cloak.
