Chapter 12
Fu Yue struggled with all her might, but the power that bound her hands did not budge.
"Fu Yue, wake up!" Arnold tried to wake up his pet with words, but she didn’t respond at all, still struggling hard.
Originally just reviewing documents, her face suddenly flashed through her mind on the way, and at the other end of the screen, the pet’s whereabouts popped up. About to shut it off casually, he saw Fu Yue in the projection staring fixedly at the Pet Warehouse. What was there?
With a flick of Arnold’s fingertips, he saw the mermaid that had just arrived on the opposite side. It was a very ordinary mermaid, and he felt there was nothing in it that could make Fu Yue stare at it for so long.
But it should be okay.
Someone who matched him very well wouldn’t have any trouble because of such an inconspicuous mermaid.
So he turned off the projection and stood up, getting ready to go check the situation at the Pet Warehouse.
Walking on the road, 1086 suddenly gave a warning.
[Now detected that Fu Yue’s mind is heavily disturbed by external forces, identified as the only other living creature in the Pet Warehouse – a mermaid. To protect Fu Yue’s well-being, please take action immediately!] Arnold, based on the behavior of the creature, made a decision, "Restrict Fu Yue’s access in the White House!"
[Restricted. Successfully prevented Fu Yue from attempting to open the mermaid enclosure.] "Hmm."
As Arnold hurried towards the Pet Warehouse, he saw the look in Fu Yue’s eyes. In that moment, he understood that it was a strong emotional gaze directed towards the mermaid in the Pet Warehouse.
At the same time, his heart suddenly felt a sharp pain. Though he didn’t understand why, Arnold knew one thing for sure.
He didn’t like the way Fu Yue looked at him.
Not at all.
Thinking that such a gaze came from mental disturbance, he reached out and held Fu Yue’s hands, trying to wake her up.
"I need to open the door… Let me open the door!" Fu Yue resisted Arnold’s grasp with all her strength.
Watching Fu Yue, who looked clearly distressed, Arnold’s eyes focused on the mermaid in the Pet Warehouse. When the mermaid noticed Arnold looking at her, she quickly hid among the artificial corals, but her eyes peeking out from the shadows still greedily watched her prey.
Suddenly meeting a pair of cold purple eyes, Fu Yue’s head throbbed with pain like being stabbed, causing the mermaid to roll in the water.
But Arnold wasn’t focusing on it now, he turned around and half knelt on the ground, gently shaking the fragile pet, trying to call her name.
"Fu Yue… Fu Yue…" Gradually awakening to the repeated calls, Fu Yue’s mind slowly cleared. The image of the mermaid faded away, and her eyes focused on the person calling her name.
Why was Arnold here? What just happened to her?
Holding her head, Fu Yue explained, "I came to see the slime, and then… there was a mermaid! When I saw its eyes, my body couldn’t move. After that… I don’t remember anything."
"Hmm. You were captured by the mermaid’s consciousness," Arnold explained while carefully observing her eyes without hesitation. He held Fu Yue’s face and examined her closely.
Startled by her face being grabbed like this, Fu Yue then saw Arnold’s face coming close to her.
With such a compelling face suddenly leaning in, staring at her like a hawk, Fu Yue felt that no matter how handsome the face was, she had to refuse it!
Is there something on her face that troubles her?
Fu Yue felt uncomfortable and didn’t dare to move, so she quickly glanced around with her eyes to try to hide it.
As she glanced around, she happened to see the mermaid at the Pet Warehouse who was staring at her.
The face still had the beautiful features she remembered, but the greedy expression and sharp teeth of the mermaid made Fu Yue shiver. She felt an instinctual urge to quickly move away from it.
Sharp-eyed Arnold noticed Fu Yue’s reaction to the mermaid and, after a final glance at her, he seemed satisfied and let her go.
Standing up, he blocked the view between Fu Yue and the mermaid, and asked, "Are you scared?"
Fu Yue, relieved that her view was blocked, quickly nodded, eager to leave the place.
Walking back, Fu Yue, now calmer, remembered the slime she saw before leaving and asked, "General, when your slime is yellow, what emotion does it represent?" Lemon yellow, quite a nice color.
Arnold frowned, "I haven’t kept any s…" he paused abruptly.
Arnold cleared his throat as he met Fu Yue’s curious gaze, then continued, "I don’t have experience taking care of slimes before, so I’m not entirely sure about the details. Well, I’ve returned to the living room now, I need to go handle some documents."
Before Fu Yue could even thank him, she watched her boss quickly walk away. Watching him move at such a fast pace, Fu Yue felt that there must be important documents to deal with this time.
Arnold, back in the office area, didn’t look at the previous files he reviewed. Instead, he immediately gave a command to 1086, "Give me a report on Fu Yue’s emotional state when she was being charmed by the mermaid just now."
[Data shows that at that time, Fu Yue’s emotions consisted of 50% admiration, 30% excitement, and 20% other emotions.] "Admiration?"
[Admiration refers to a feeling of liking someone and wanting to be close to them…"] Arnold forcefully interrupted, "Stop. Analyze my emotions when I entered the Pet Warehouse earlier."
[Your emotions at that time were composed of 40% jealousy, 20% anger, 20% sadness, and 20% other emotions. Congratulations, you have initially experienced the feeling of jealousy.] 1086’s flat synthetic voice congratulated, striking into Arnold’s heart unexpectedly like a hidden blade.
Jealousy? Who’s jealous of whom? Is he jealous of the mermaid?
Arnold looked up information on this species of mermaid, carefully examined it, and concluded: this low-level civilization aquatic species had nothing worth making him jealous.
Then he remembered Fu Yue’s expression from before.
[The system has detected your feeling of jealousy again. Congratulations, you have further gained this emotion. Keep up the good work and fully master it…]"1086."
[1086 at your service.]"Shut up."
[…]This question had been hovering in Arnold’s mind. In the afternoon of the next day, he finally decided to ask Carter about it.
Glancing at Fu Yue lying on the sofa, Arnold remembered the events that had happened earlier. He turned back to his office and called Carter’s projection.
The connection was almost instant, as soon as it connected, Arnold’s ears were assaulted.
Carter angrily exclaimed, "Arnold, why did you return the mermaid to me again?! Wasn’t it agreed to keep it with you for a month? Also, why does the mermaid seem to be feeling mentally attacked after coming back, not as lively as before?"
He appeared deeply hurt, as if Arnold had done something to hurt his feelings.
But Arnold remained unfazed, simply recounting the previous encounter. He asked, "I didn’t find anything unusual in my subsequent physical examinations, so why did my heart have such a strong chain reaction at that moment?"
"Can mermaids have a misleading function…" Carter’s eyes lit up, "It must be because our advanced civilization is not affected by mental attacks, then I can conduct a comparative experiment later…" Arnold coldly interrupted, "I will send you a report of your vacation this year…" Finally realizing the seriousness of the situation, Carter returned to the original topic, "As far as I know, intense emotional fluctuations can sometimes cause slight discomfort in the heart. So, I think you might have developed feelings for the Blue Star people."
Arnold glanced across, his eyes now even colder.
Like Blue Star people? That’s the most unlikely answer. What reason, what motive does he have to like a being created by a first-level civilization?
Maybe Arnold’s emotions were too obvious this time, even Carter could feel it through the screen. But he was very puzzled, "Do you have any other explanation besides this one?"
