Chapter 98: How Beasts Deal with Their Landlords
“Gaa—Aaaahhh—!”
A horned demon commander roared loudly, striding forward through the tunnel.
The crack had opened, allowing countless demons to leap down into the “nest reproductive center.” By all logic, the Valaharl people’s “offspring” should have been wiped out, and the warriors guarding the entrance should have scattered without reason to fight.
But…
“Bang! Bang! Bang!”
“Clang!”
These warriors, shrouded in coats and masks, kept firing fearlessly.
Bloodthirsty demons fell one after another under the assault of powerful weapons. When they closed in for melee combat, expecting to dominate, another volley met them—followed by bayonets and engineering shovels!
“Bang—!”
“Aaaahhh—!”
The Valaharl people were like mutes—silent in daily life and equally voiceless in battle.
They fired silently, fixed bayonets silently, charged silently, and died silently.
They seemed to feel no pain and uttered no war cries; only the faintly quickened “hiss” of their respirators broke the quiet.
Fearless, they advanced wave after wave.
Compared to the howling, grotesque demon horde, this machine-like army—silent, disciplined, and unflinching—exuded far greater dread.
Finally, the horned demon commander snapped.
“Aaaahhh—!”
He shrieked and charged.
Claws ripped through flesh, scattering broken limbs everywhere.
Only when Valaharl warriors were shredded, their blood soaking the earth, did the demon commander grasp they were mortals—not machines.
At last…
“Roar…”
“Aaaahhh—!”
Nearly every Valaharl warrior lay dead. Only one remained.
Her gun was shattered, lost somewhere; one arm had been torn off in the fray.
Though her “smart coat” swiftly sealed the wound, the instant of chaos corruption must have brought agony.
Yet even as comrades fell, their broken limbs littering the ground; even as the rift yawned open and the “reproductive center” behind her fell, rendering defense futile—this Valaharl warrior stood proud before the gates, like an invincible deity.
“Huff… hiss… huff…”
Beyond the quickened rasp of her respirator, she remained unchanged.
“Swish—!”
She drew the engineering shovel from her back, steady and ready for the next assault.
“Roar—!”
The bloodthirsty demon stirred!
He howled and took a step forward, ready to charge!
But at that moment…
“Boom—!”
Huge vibrations echoed again!
The sky above the crack darkened as a huge figure completely blocked the already dim sky!
“Ah—!”
Screams came from inside the “reproductive center.”
They were not human, but demonic!
Then…
“Bang!”
The door that the warriors had sacrificed their lives to protect suddenly swung open!
“Thud… thud… thud…”
“Huff… hiss…”
The heavy sound of boots and the hiss of respirators could be heard.
A Valaharl Researcher in a white coat walked over, his entire body shimmering with golden light.
In his hand, he held the head of a bloodthirsty demon.
The terror and pain from its death were still visible on its face.
“Thud!”
He tossed the demon’s head to the ground.
Behind him…
“Thud… thud… thud…”
More people, glowing with golden light but dressed simply, charged towards the horned demon commander with all their might!
However, the warriors who had already fought might soon rest.
“Boom—!”
A loud roar of water came from above them and the demons!
From the crack above, a large amount of thick liquid cascaded down like a waterfall!
—-
“Ah, yum… yum…”
“Little crabs, so delicious!”
“Ah, wait, this should be…”
“The ‘rotifer crab’ from the subclass Branchiopoda.”
The rotifer crab looked like a crab and moved like a crab, but it wasn’t a real crab; it didn’t even have big claws.
The existing Branchiopoda were just tiny bugs living on fish skin.
But back in the ancient Carboniferous to Cretaceous times, the rotifer crab filled the crab’s ecological niche, mostly eating organic stuff and plankton; these “fake crabs” did well from the Carboniferous to the Triassic period and made it through three big Mass Extinctions.
In the Jurassic, when real crabs came, the rotifer crab family declined, slowly becoming less important.
By the Cretaceous ET, they vanished with the non-bird dinosaurs.
So, sometimes, surviving the “toxic circle” didn’t mean a species would live on, ’cause there were always others tougher than you!
Grabbing the ecological niche, especially the low one, was key!
Trilobite thought about the rotifer crab’s past as he happily munched on little crabs, no worries.
As for the big spread of red dots on the muddy ground…
“Hmm, there were so many red dots, but not in the sea, and picking them up was too much work.”
“If only I had some spawn, ah… those symbiotic creatures would be great.”
“Then I’d save myself a lot of trouble.”
“Crunch… crunch…”
While Trilobite thought this, he munched away, leaning down to eat the little crabs.
But as he kept nibbling, he noticed…
“Hmm!?”
“There were little green dots in this crack? Wait, why was the green turning blue!?”
“Did it change after touching my spit?”
“Interesting…”
Trilobite pondered that while most symbiotic relationships needed a long time of working together, fighting, and giving in between two or more things, he was a special case.
He had a System!
The time for evolution wasn’t much less than for forming symbiotic relationships, but for Trilobite, it was just using energy to buy something.
“Great!”
“Turn all of you into my ‘symbiotic species’ and help me change these little red dots into my Chaos Energy!”
“Gulp—spit—!”
Unlike the few drops that dripped out before, Trilobite now sprayed spit in big gobs!
“Splash!”
“Ploop…”
Soon, the crack was full of his spit!
“Very good!”
“Next…”
Trilobite turned to look at a lake covered with “algae.”
“Hm, this big lake is interesting.”
“But first, I need a spot to rest and evolve.”
“Somewhere with tunnels dug by other animals or something.”
Trilobite clumsily moved into the murky, “shallow” water.
As he swam, he found a good place.
“Nice!”
“Best if there’s no landlord.”
“If there is one, I’ll eat him first, then rent his house!”
