Chapter 79: The Great Plan!
“Bang—!”
When the wall of the “tunnel” was pushed open by a creature with a round head and structures on its upper jaw resembling “plate teeth,” Trilobite saw it too.
“Hmm, that’s a double-finned fish.”
“It’s a type of ancient lungfish.”
Lungfish were distant relatives of four-legged creatures. They once thrived during the Devonian period and spread widely across the world in the Mesozoic Era. But today, only a few survive—just 6 species in 3 genera—making them a much-declined group.
Yet, they managed to live through tough times in a competitive, disaster-filled world, earning them a spot among the great survivors.
As the name suggests, lungfish breathed using “lungs.”
But most had gills too, and those “lungs” were really just highly developed swim bladders that helped them breathe.
This handy setup let them adapt to both water and dry land.
Of course, exceptions existed, like the African lungfish. It had a super-developed swim bladder and weak, barely working gills. Though called a fish, it needed to surface like whales or dolphins to breathe now and then. If it stayed underwater too long, it could even drown…
It was a real disgrace to fish.
In short, compared to terrestrial vertebrates—who also had lungs and spread everywhere on land—these ancient cousins seemed to have squandered their chances.
The creature Trilobite stared at was the ancestor of lungfish, the “double-finned fish.”
Unlike modern lungfish with nearly merged fins, this one had separate dorsal and caudal fins. Its body was long and thin, a bit like a loach or catfish.
That shape was perfect for sliding through muddy swamps.
“Not bad.”
“It’s about half a meter long, smaller than when I first got here.”
“Just right for a feast.”
“Looks tasty, but I hope it’s not muddy.”
“It’s hunting… Hmm? When did I get another big Trilobite spawn?”
“At that size, it might be as big as the queen, right?”
“Ah, but no time for that now.”
“I’m hungry.”
Trilobite curled his tail and body into the mud, covering his head with sludge.
Though his vision was poor, he wasn’t blind; the half-meter-long creature was almost in his face, so he could see it clearly. Plus, he relied on his Lorentz Jar and Olfactory Membranes to sense things.
“Go—!”
“Whoosh—!”
His caudal fin waved as the Pander Fish unleashed its energy and burst from the sludge!
“Ah—whoa—!”
Its massive, blade-like mouth clamped down hard on the double-finned fish, which was also hunting for lunch!
“Ha…”
“Roar——!”
The roar spread through the water as the massive “etheric serpent” drew closer, and the terrified voices in the cabin grew louder.
But at that moment…
“Boom——!”
The colossal “etheric current” surged upward, pushing the “Son of the Giant God” aside.
Yet even amid the spinning and screams, a more magnificent and fearsome colossal being suddenly lunged up from below!
This massive creature’s jaw was already nearly twice the length of the “Son of the Giant God!”
Its enormous mouth gaped wide like the entrance to an abyss, easily big enough for the “Son of the Giant God” to pass in and out freely, as if it could work as a small port for docking.
It gave off a holy and lively feel, like all the good things in the world.
But what it did was very savage!
“Bang——!”
The blade-like jaws slammed shut hard!
The etheric serpent didn’t even have time to scream before it was violently cut in half at the waist.
The lower half was swallowed whole by the massive predator; the upper half slowly sank to the tunnel floor, the exact spot where the “colossal being” had burst out!
Its gills opened and closed uselessly, twisting helplessly, but nothing helped.
In the end…
“Ahwoo… Ahwoo…”
The once-mighty etheric serpent was eaten by this even bigger and stronger being.
“You are very lucky!”
Albert Drake steadied the “Son of the Giant God” and turned to congratulate the representatives of the people, who rubbed their bruised heads or vomited from the ship’s spinning.
“You got to see the Giant God up close!”
“And you saw his glory in battle!”
“But the Giant God’s power isn’t just about destruction; it also includes—creation!”
The Saltwater Queen’s words made the representatives think hard.
“Do you mean… this tunnel is the Giant God’s creation?!”
Albert Drake nodded proudly.
“That’s right!”
“This tunnel is another big gift from the Giant God to us mortals after the ‘Solar Holy Light system’!”
“No, this gift is even more important for the whole Crystal Walls!”
“Because our special ‘City of Dimensions’ is a ‘net path’ that will link various Bubble Worlds in the future!”
“And the Great Plan the Giant God is doing is a grand scheme to wipe out chaos and give the entire Crystal Walls the power to fight chaos—the Network Plan!”
"Ahwoo… Ahwoo…"
"Ah, well…"
"It really had a muddy taste, but was surprisingly delicious."
Trilobite had already swallowed the entire "double-finned fish," bones and all.
Since he couldn’t chew, he could only savor the taste without feeling the texture.
"It’s just a pity the Chaos Energy provided wasn’t much, showing up orange in the ‘system vision.’"
Luckily…
"Burp—!"
"Plenty of meat there!"
"I’m full!"
Time to get back to work!
Trilobite shook his head and kept pushing toward the end of the "tunnel."
"Hey… hey… hey…"
Trilobite nudged and shoved forward, quickly clearing a path by squeezing through.
Actually, he’d dug when making the opening, but digging nonstop was too much effort and unnecessary.
He just needed a passage between the two "lakes"; with no furniture to haul, getting himself through was enough.
The "sludge" got pushed aside by Trilobite, growing denser and firmer to form the "corridor" walls; a couple more twists basically set it in place.
As for why Trilobite avoided the surface…
"Tunnels are safer than open spaces, no doubt."
"Better yet, other critters think so too!"
"I can carve out a tunnel while snacking along the way!"
"Hahaha…"
Trilobite was mid-laugh when…
*Ahem…*
*Um, I’m sorry for how I treated you before.*
*My apologies.*
*Please don’t go, okay?*
"Huh?"
System Lady’s sudden gentleness left Trilobite utterly baffled.
