Chapter 52: Fangs of Mortals!
When the colossal Outer God descended, a mad, twisted, and overwhelming aura of despair enveloped the ocean people.
They had just celebrated the world’s rebirth, yet now they faced utter despair.
"What… what is that…?"
"It’s over… this… this is…!"
"How can such an Outer God exist?!"
Indeed, the arrival was an Outer God!
And this time, the Outer God was an unseen behemoth!
Its frame dwarfed even the Giant God!
A slender, geometric conical shell formed its core; dozens of tangled, madness-inducing tentacles served as its weapons.
Enormous eyes blazed with insanity and cruelty!
Neither Sulya—a veteran of chaos wars—nor Captain Dekhaka—who’d witnessed countless deities—nor the erudite technical officer Icarus recognized this god.
But one knew.
"This is no ordinary Outer God! It hails from beyond the Crystal Walls—a realm of endless chaos forged from ‘Primal Mud’ and ‘etheric liquid’!"
"Outer Gods there, untouched by worldly laws, are the fiercest and most deranged!"
"That chaotic energy fuels their immense power yet leaves their minds fractured and witless!"
"This must be one of them!"
"Who summoned such a being!? Now…"
Just then…
"Screeeech—Zzzzzzt—!"
A frenzied roar shook the seas. Though the Giant God’s might repelled and blocked most of the evil god’s power, residual corruption tainted the waters near the crater.
The fungal lights flickering like fireflies in the depths began to fade.
"No! The Giant God’s triumph… his labor… will be defiled!"
"But can the Giant God truly…?"
The Prophet lifted his gaze toward the Giant God, locked in stalemate with the monstrosity.
Yet in that moment, he saw more—
A vast shadow blotted out the ocean above, like clouds drifting underwater!
"Whoooosh—!"
"Buuuuuzz—!"
Magical engines thrummed through the deep.
Every battleship of the human resistance surged forth. Tiny as they were, they merged into a colossal dark cloud, hurtling courageously toward the leviathan!
"Um…"
"Although it looked tough on the outside but weak inside, it was still tricky for me…"
Trilobite watched the tentacle monster, half again his size, swimming slowly back and forth.
As a researcher and guide at the natural history museum, he recognized this creature.
"It wasn’t a hornstone; it was like something from a BBC documentary. I, as a primitive true finned fish, couldn’t fight it."
Actually, the BBC exaggerated in the documentary. There was still debate in academia about whether hornstones were really that big; some scholars even said they weren’t fierce predators but gentle filter feeders.
They were like the blue whales of the Ordovician.
But the creature facing Trilobite wasn’t a hornstone.
"Leviathan hornstone."
"That wasn’t really a squid…"
In detail, nautiluses and ammonites shouldn’t be called squids.
Generally, only creatures from subclass Cephalopoda, infraphylum Neocoleoidea, and order Decapoda are squids, while those from order Octopoda are octopuses.
Ammonites and belemnites also belong to class Cephalopoda, but they’re in subclass Nautiloidea, subclass Ammonoidea, or subclass Certophora.
They weren’t closely related to squids.
Calling belemnites and ammonites squids is like saying all mammals are primates.
The Leviathan hornstone was a relative of nautiluses, far from squids or octopuses.
It had a long, slender straight shell, mostly filled with air chambers; it could control its buoyancy by adjusting the air inside.
This trait came from modern nautiluses.
But other inherited traits might not be good.
"However, these tentacles…"
"They looked like they could drive you mad."
"But despite looking scary, they were much weaker than those in subclass Cephalopoda."
The Leviathan hornstone had a dense cluster of 60 pairs of tentacles!
But they weren’t thick or flexible like squid and octopus tentacles with suckers; instead, they were like thin noodles packed together.
Such tentacles were too weak.
These creatures could only hunt prey much smaller than themselves!
Perhaps if hornstones were as big as in the BBC documentary, they could catch sea scorpions half a meter to a meter long.
But the Leviathan hornstone, with a maximum length of 2.4 meters including shell, couldn’t prey on a 1.5-meter true finned fish.
The one in front wasn’t even the biggest; with its shell, it was just under two meters, about 1.9 meters.
Besides, most of it was hollow shell; if you removed the meat and weighed it, it would likely be much lighter than Trilobite.
"I could fight!"
"But there was a risk! I had to be careful!"
"In any case, I had to come up with a plan."
At that moment…
"Whoa—!"
The enormous Leviathan hornstone sprayed water in fear and took two steps back.
Because right in front of it…
"Swish—!"
"Swish—!"
A massive "Giant Fish" made up of countless "Trilobite" creatures threatened it, forcing this being to carefully assess the situation and shift its attention away from Trilobite.
"Great!"
Trilobite took the opportunity to swim away, leaving the evil god for the swarm of "Trilobites."
—-
"That’s right, just like that!"
"Maintain formation between the fleets!"
"Everyone, keep your positions!"
"Remember! The Giant God’s grace and expectations for us!"
"He does not wish for us to be pets but wants us to fight alongside Him!"
"Show some spirit! Show some courage!"
"Let the reckless deities see the fangs of mortals!"
Sulya’s speech echoed among the battleships, mining ships, and even civilian boats.
"Oh—!"
The ocean people surged with morale, charging forward!
They saw the blessings brought by the Giant God; they also witnessed the deep sea rejuvenating.
The hope granted by the Giant God was slowly sprouting in the deep sea, and they must not let anything be destroyed by the insane Outer God!
Thus, a desperate fleet was organized.
Under the protection of the Giant God’s divine might, they had no fear of the terrifying, twisted aura of the Outer God.
Their strategy against the deities was unprecedented—using hundreds of battleships and even more civilian and mining ships to form a giant fish, bluffing to draw attention and reduce the combat risks for their god!
"Whoosh…"
Sulya gasped in excitement, leading the entire "Giant Fish."
Her plan had succeeded.
The foolish, chaotic deities could be shocked and intimidated by such a massive form; their actions were driven by instinct rather than thought.
"Come on!"
"Yes, just like that—!"
She watched as the gigantic Outer God abandoned the fleeing Giant God, lifting its countless tentacles to pounce on her massive fleet!
"Attention all units! Emergency evasion!"
Moments later…
"Whoosh—!"
The countless tentacles, with the force of thunder, came crashing down!
The desperate fleet hurriedly prepared to evade.
But…
"Oh no! The hull had been affected by the evil god, and the magical engine wouldn’t start!"
"What was happening? The hull seemed to be afraid of the evil god!?"
"We couldn’t leave! Ah—!"
It looked like the fleet was about to be swept away in a devastating attack!
The Outer God’s fierce tentacles were already upon them!
At this critical moment…
"Whoosh—!"
A massive shadow suddenly burst in from the side, sending water surging that completely dispersed the fleet and pushed them out of the reach of the tentacles.
"Ah—ugh—!"
The giant jaws blocked the might of the massive Outer God, swallowing all of its tentacles into its mouth!
