Chapter 34: The Terrifying Counterattack of the Outer Gods!
“Ha ha ha! Shatter all human ships! Shatter them!”
“Weird things! Shatter them all!”
…
The two twisted Outer Gods laughed joyfully as they chased the strange giant ship.
They were happily breaking things on the sea, but the Outer Gods were beings that loved new prey and quickly got bored with the old. When they saw something newer and more interesting, they dropped what they were doing.
That flat, odd ship looking like a big beetle definitely caught their interest more.
So, they went after it.
Each evil god raised his tentacles!
“Whoosh——!”
They felt sure they’d soon see the pretty sight of pieces floating in the sea again!
But…
“Thud!”
“Bang!”
When the tentacles struck down, only dull thuds sounded. The scene they imagined didn’t happen.
Transparent ripples spread over the strange ship. A strong recoil threw the tentacles back hard.
The Outer Gods even spotted a shadow of a “curled-up armored bug” flash across the hull!
The Ball Joint Armor worked!
This didn’t make the Outer Gods less interested. Instead, it excited them more.
“Ha ha! Fun!”
“If the outside doesn’t work, try the inside!”
“Zzi…”
Suddenly, many tentacled creatures appeared from the shells of the Outer Gods. They were human-sized but rushed eagerly at the deity’s call, scrambling over the gods’ tentacles to jump onto the odd battleship.
Heavily armored warriors leaped out from the giant ship too. Led by a tall, strangely dressed woman, they fought the crazed spawns, keeping them away!
—-
“Solar Holy Light Slash!”
“Bang——!”
The great sword, glowing with bright light, slashed down and cut a spawn covered in tentacles and reeking of foul “humus” in half.
But…
“Zzi…”
The wriggling, tangled tentacles joined back together.
Soon, the spawn was good as new.
“Ha… Ha… Ha…”
The twisted spawn laughed with a distorted voice, mocking the tall armored knight before it.
“Under the protection of my god’s divine power, no matter how many times I was slashed, I could be reborn!”
“You were all doomed!”
“Ga——!”
The Outer God spawn shrieked, extending a mass of clawed tentacles from its terrifying mouthparts, lunging at the knight.
Although the Holy Light from the Sun still had a restraining effect on the Outer God spawn, it was much weaker than its effect on chaos.
If the special attack against chaos was two hundred percent, the special attack against the Outer God’s power might only be fifty percent.
…
The female knight stayed silent, her fighting spirit not high or low; she just skillfully struck the crazy mass of tentacles away with another swing of her sword and calmly fell back to the next defense line.
“No matter how you retreated, it wouldn’t help!”
“Behind you was your ship’s commander, right!?”
“Look!”
The twisted spawn pointed to the side of the ship, where…
“Bang——!”
A gigantic tentacle hit the hull hard, making it shake violently.
Although ripples glowed again, this time the light was much dimmer.
The Solar Knight’s body leaned to one side, but she smoothly stepped back, joining the final defense line with her sisters.
The Outer God spawn could even see the woman standing behind the Solar Knights now.
There was nowhere to retreat!
“Bang——!”
The Outer God’s tentacles struck the ship again. This time, the Ball Joint Armor flickered one last time, and then…
“Snap——!”
The sound of breaking glass rang out clearly.
The shield broke!
The ship swayed right after the Giant God’s hit.
“Ugh…”
The female captain shook hard from the tremor, her chest swaying a lot.
The Outer God spawn licked its tongue; since it came from humans, it still had human desires. Facing the female knight, all its tentacles itched.
But soon, its reckless thoughts stopped suddenly.
For some reason, a scary feeling grew inside this spawn.
“This…”
“Oh no!”
There was never a feeling without cause, whether it was “love” or “fear.”
What tightened his chest was the weakening of divine grace!
And the root cause of this was…
“Whoosh——!”
Raging currents slammed in, tossing the strange vessel violently across the waves; the twisted spawns tumbled headlong, many flung straight from the deck.
Before they plunged shrieking into the abyss, they glimpsed a colossal creature dwarfing their own deity surging upward from the depths!
Clenched within its monstrous jaws was the very Outer God they served!
—-
“Crunch——Thud——!”
Only when Trilobite swung his massive jaws shut, clamping down on the cornerstone-like beast, did he realize how perfectly suited this body was.
“So smooth!”
“It moves through water like it’s nothing!”
“I feel fused with the currents!”
“This streamlined form and scales even seem to muffle noise—my swimming’s utterly silent, completely unnoticed by my prey!”
“Ah! I owe this to my precious trilobites too!”
“Creatures here likely haven’t even heard of fishing.”
Just as Trilobite marveled…
“Thwack——!”
“Thud! Thud!”
The creature in his grip thrashed its tentacles, battering Trilobite fiercely.
The jarring impacts snapped his focus back to the prey.
Yet this time, he felt no pain at all.
“Hmm… judging by these perfectly straight shells, this must be something like ‘Sinoceras’.”
Sinoceras, a hornstone unearthed in his homeland, bore fossils renowned for their glassy smoothness and geometric precision—resembling carved marble pagodas. Prized as display pieces, they’d filled cabinets in his old museum.
Their length could stretch over a meter.
Puny compared to a cornerstone, perhaps, but cephalopods were no gentle herbivores. Though their tentacles were primitive—lacking the hooked suckers of later species—their parrot-like beaks remained razor-sharp.
Fierce, in short!
But against Trilobite? Meaningless.
For he was Carcharocles!
A Carcharocles armed with Duncker’s fish-piercing fangs!
Although these creatures similar to “Sinoceras” were nearly as long as Trilobite and looked quite large and imposing, in reality, most of the soft parts of the hornstone were concentrated in the front fifth of their bodies.
Overall, their size relied on their shells.
Could mortals, by simply standing on stilts two meters tall, challenge an Astartes Space Marine!?
Moreover, to be safe, when Trilobite surged up from his ambush in the sea, he spent 300 Magic Power to wrap himself in three layers of Ball Joint Armor!
Now, these Outer Gods couldn’t even break the first layer of Ball Joint Armor, let alone harm Trilobite’s body.
And Trilobite didn’t waste words.
“Ga——Squeak——!”
His massive fangs bit down hard!
The middle part of the hornstone’s shell suddenly collapsed!
“Bang!”
A burst of blood mist bloomed in the water, and one Outer God fell!
“Ahh… Ahh…”
Trilobite didn’t hold back; he yanked out the chewed-up soft parts from the broken shell and swallowed them whole.
But the hunt didn’t stop.
Another Outer God was trying to escape like a typical “squid,” shooting out water to flee.
But Trilobite wouldn’t let him go!
“I’m still hungry!”
“Since I’ve caught you, and you’re here now, don’t you leave!”
“You’ll be my lunch!”
But the downside of the shell stacking showed.
Armor and mobility could hardly go together; even many later land crocodiles shed their heavy skin armor for better movement; let alone the hornstone’s “armor” was made of heavier, clumsier limestone shells.
Trying to match this with the smooth, fluid-dynamic sharks with small-scale tech was just dreaming.
“Ga——Bang——!”
The giant jaws clamped down on the shell of the “Sinoceras” and crushed it, the soft inside ripped out brutally.
“Ahh——!”
Trilobite ate the second Outer God like he was eating oysters.
But soon he saw the Outer Gods weren’t so simple.
“Oh no!”
“This hornstone is dead, but it still has a trick!”
“I’m too full! My stomach hurts!”
