Chapter 112: This Dish Was Rather Cute
When Trilobite finally burst through the ceiling and emerged from the City of Dimensions, he encountered a bizarre-looking creature that appeared somewhat "adorable."
"What is this…?"
"Chubby and truly bizarre-looking!"
The creature resembled centipedes or millipedes in overall structure—its elongated body featured two lengthy antennae and densely packed pairs of "legs" beneath the abdomen.
Yet unlike centipedes or millipedes, this being possessed neither tough armor nor a soft shell. Its entire body appeared fleshy and rather plump.
Even its legs weren’t jointed appendages but rather "meaty" stumps.
This gave it some resemblance to lepidopteran larvae—caterpillars.
But unlike caterpillars, this peculiar insect before him seemed slightly "translucent," displaying a brownish-red hue as if molded from some springy material like rubber or gel.
Naturally, the creature’s most striking feature remained its sheer size.
Trilobite had witnessed large bean bugs and giant centipedes, yet any creature exceeding half a meter was exceptionally rare.
The primitive, inefficient spiracle-based respiratory system of arthropods generally couldn’t support such dimensions.
Moreover, this creature barely exhibited body segmentation, appearing even more primitive.
"Ah, though growing large isn’t impossible under special conditions."
"For instance, with explosively high oxygen levels here."
"Still, its form alone tells me what this is."
"Commonly called velvet worms, scientifically termed onychophorans."
Onychophorans belong to the phylum Onychophora, likely descendants of Cambrian odd creatures. They share distant kinship with ultra-resilient water bears.
In other words, onychophorans might be distant cousins of strange prawns.
Onychophorans themselves emerged early—Cambrian fossils already show creatures sharing their anatomical traits, like bizarre worms and micro-net worms.
True onychophorans likely appeared over 300 million years ago during the Carboniferous period.
Back then, plants flourished unchallenged, freely saturating the atmosphere with oxygen.
Such oxygen abundance rendered arthropods’ breathing efficiency limitations irrelevant.
"Hmm, odd creatures or ‘onychophorans’ growing slightly larger then wasn’t surprising."
"Of course, bigger means better!"
"Bigger means more meat!"
"Raa!"
Trilobite roared with delight. Hunger propelled his massive frame forward in a sudden charge.
"Crunch!"
"Thud!"
His fin limbs clumsily stomped the ground, trampling clusters of "little red dots" into the mud.
Truthfully, Trilobite hadn’t overlooked them—he simply couldn’t spare time pursuing minor prey while letting the "onychophoran" escape.
"Zzzz… hiss…"
The onychophoran emitted a terrifying screech and spun around to flee.
Panicking, it twisted its body as dozens of paired fleshy legs scrambled, clearly attempting escape.
"Run? Not a chance!"
"Halt!"
"Buzz——!"
Trilobite’s body coiled backward slightly, his tail and hind limbs gathering immense power.
Then…
"Buzz——!"
The pent-up energy exploded forth!
"Whoosh…"
A Pander Fish managed to momentarily "launch" itself using its tail!
"Boom——!"
A colossal shadow engulfed the onychophoran’s head!
—-
Truth was, before Trilobite erupted from the City of Dimensions, Yusuf had performed commendably.
After a brief fright, he’d steadied himself, believing he was mentally prepared.
"Using the City of Dimensions as cover, bluffing, then launching ambushes—typical Outer God tactics."
"But with strategic-level magic ready, the tables will turn!"
"The Sneak Attacker becomes prey while I become the hunter!"
"I’ll strike that dim-witted fish leaping from water with my magically forged harpoon!"
Yet…
"Boom——!"
When the colossal creature with its massive, savage skull burst from underground—nearly upheaving the entire terrain—Chaos Demon God Yusuf realized how laughable his "preparation" truly was.
"What… what manner of monster is this?!"
"So enormous!?"
"And this aura from its divine form…"
"The damned magical density…"
"Uh… aaaaah…!"
Yusuf stared at the beast dwarfing his size, at its gaping maw, at the ravenous brutality in its eyes…
Fear seized his heart completely.
He felt like an unarmed mortal facing a tiger, or a songbird pinned by a python’s gaze—utterly frozen stiff!
The sheer presence of the colossal creature completely overwhelmed him.
But worse was yet to come!
“Roar…”
The "monster" turned its head, staring at him.
Though its eyes were made of large crystals in a strange arrangement, Yusuf somehow sensed the "greed" and "appetite" flickering within those odd eyes.
It was a gaze that saw him as just a dish, with no equality at all!
In the past, Yusuf might have been angry.
But now, he couldn’t even form a thought of resistance.
“Oh no… what magic was I preparing just now?”
“Was it the God-Slaying Spear or something?”
“Oh no, my Magic Power was collapsing!? My chaotic Magic Power was terrified of this creature’s might!?”
“No… ah… ahhhhhh…!”
For the first few seconds, Yusuf tried to snap out of his fear and restore the almost-formed magic; but as fear grew in his heart, he finally lost all reason, like he was a bug facing its natural enemy.
“Run!”
Chaos Demon God turned and scurried away, trying to escape the battlefield.
But…
“Boom——!”
The Giant God’s massive body crashed heavily onto the ground, the tremendous impact making everything jump.
“Boom—— Boom—— Boom—— Whoosh——!”
The enormous force caused terrifying earthquake waves, swirling massive dust clouds as they spread in all directions, engulfing the fleeing, wailing demon legion and covering the trenches of the Valaharl people.
And the Giant God could finally reach the tail tip of Chaos Demon God with its mouth.
“No——!”
Chaos Demon God Yusuf cried out in despair, turned his head, and unleashed his "innate spell"—chaotic gel—spraying it suddenly toward the Giant God.
But…
This was good against weak mortal soldiers, but silly against a god much bigger than him.
“Whoosh… Whoosh…”
The Giant God flinched slightly from the spray, but stayed unhurt, charging forward fiercely!
Then…
“Ah—— Ugh——!”
The gaping jaws opened wide, throwing a long shadow over Yusuf’s head!
“Snap——!”
The huge mouth bit down, firmly swallowing Chaos Demon God.
