Chapter 89: Title
Time passed quickly, and before she knew it, half of spring had already gone. Since Gu Hengbo arrived on the grassland, she rarely slept until the sun was high, but this morning was different. She was awakened late and felt sore all over, as if she had rolled on stones all night, and her head was heavy and foggy.
“What’s going on? What time is it? I slept too long,” Gu Hengbo said, rubbing her waist as she stood up from bed.
Qingfeng hurried to support her. “Miss, we received news from Kyoto early this morning; Lord Zou has given birth!”
Gu Hengbo froze with her hand on her waist. “What did you say?”
“Miss, you’re really confused! I said Lord Zou! Hey, where are you going?” Qingfeng hadn’t finished speaking before Gu Hengbo rushed out. “It’s only been a few months, not even nine months yet. Can the baby survive? I must see for myself!”
Qingfeng stood still for a moment, then grabbed a cloak and hurried after her.
Lian Rong saw a white figure running this way from a distance, and she raised her eyebrows. Was someone in such a hurry to be reborn?
"Why are you running so fast?" Lian Rong asked.
Gu Hengbo took a breath and patted Lian Rong’s arm. "My friend had a baby. Can you help me get there?"
Lian Rong glanced at the nearby carriage. "Isn’t there a carriage?"
Gu Hengbo shook her head. "No, the carriage is too slow. If I wait, she might die. If you’re not willing, Wuyang can take me. I looked for her but couldn’t find her."
When Qingfeng arrived, she saw the two of them talking, and her lady was out of breath, leaning on her knees. Lian Rong turned her gaze, and Qingfeng’s body automatically stood straight. "Greetings, Your Highness!"
Lian Rong remained silent, glancing at the cloak in Qingfeng’s hand. Qingfeng immediately understood, and without looking sideways, helped Gu Hengbo put on the cloak. The way her mistress looked was too sharp, like an ice pick, making Qingfeng’s back ache.
Gu Hengbo straightened up and pulled the cloak around herself. "Thank you, it’s cold outside. You should go inside if you’re fine."
Qingfeng silently glanced at Lian Rong, who had an expressionless face. Her heart raced, and she quickly turned and ran away.
Gu Hengbo tightened the cloak, noticing Lian Rong’s silence and wondering if something was wrong. "Um, where did Wuyang go?"
Lian Rong glanced at her. "Do you want to ride there?"
Gu Hengbo nodded. "Riding is faster. It should take about a day."
Gu Hengbo had already decided that if it came to it, she would ride alone. If she got lost, she would just ask for directions. But then she heard Lian Rong say slowly, "Go back and change your clothes; wear something warmer. We will set off right away."
Huh? "Are you going to accompany me?" Gu Hengbo felt a strange tightening in her chest.
Lian Rong smiled. "I just don’t know how to meet Madam Dou."
Gu Hengbo felt happy inside and bent her eyes into a smile. "It’s okay, you can just drop me off and come back."
A fleeting expression crossed Lian Rong’s eyes, disappearing in an instant. "Alright."
Gu Hengbo glared at the stubborn little black horse that was taking its time. This horse had gotten familiar with her over the past few days. The horses on the grasslands were fierce, and she usually didn’t dare to ride them. This little black horse had been sulking lately and just wouldn’t move.
"I said, little black, I sympathize with you for being constipated these days. Don’t you remember the bag of bananas I bought for you? You’re so ungrateful. How about I give you a kiss? Be a good horse!"
Lian Rong watched Gu Hengbo hugging the chestnut horse named Little Black and pouting at it. She couldn’t help but frown.
"Be a good horse, and when we get to the capital, I will buy you anything you want."
"Remember the candied chestnuts? They were so sweet and fragrant. And the yellow lotus paste cake—oh, Little Black!"
Lian Rong: "…"
"Little Black!"
Lian Rong’s mouth twitched. "Perhaps it’s sick. It can’t understand you. If you don’t mind, you can ride with me."
Gu Hengbo, still angry, grabbed Lian Rong and walked away. "I’ll ride with you. Little Black, you better not follow me. If other horses bully you, don’t come looking for me. I treat you like my own son every day. So ungrateful, hm!"
By the time they got on Lian Rong’s horse, Gu Hengbo still looked like she had just eaten a mouthful of gunpowder. She looked utterly miserable.
"Why are you arguing with a horse?" Lian Rong said with a hint of helplessness, unable to get a word in edgewise.
Gu Hengbo kicked her legs in the air, like she was having a tantrum. "I’m just mad! Don’t comfort me."
Lian Rong watched her childish behavior, a smile in her eyes. Her hand holding the reins tightened unknowingly. "Then you better hold on tight."
Before Gu Hengbo could react, the black horse dashed off. She let out a scream. With nothing to hold onto and the horse running faster than when she normally rode, she turned around and clung to Lian Rong’s waist. Her face ended up buried in a soft spot. She shifted her position, uncomfortable as the wind howled past, then shouted, "I didn’t mean to take advantage of you!" with great energy! In the end, she even nudged against Lian Rong and closed her eyes contently.
During a break, Gu Hengbo felt a bit embarrassed. "I’ll treat for lunch."
Lian Rong sat down on the bench. "If you want me to invite you, I can’t."
Gu Hengbo gave her a sidelong glance. "You haven’t fixed that royal quirk of yours yet. What will you do if you go out alone? Are you planning to snatch something?"
Lian Rong laughed. "What does it matter if I snatch? There’s truly nothing in this world I can’t get, including you!"
Gu Hengbo rested her chin on her hand with a look of disdain. "If your mother knew she had such a daughter, she would be furious."
Lian Rong’s expression changed a few times, but in less than a moment, she returned to normal, still smiling gently. "She doesn’t need to be angry. She passed away shortly after I was born."
Gu Hengbo, who had been tapping her fingers on the table, stopped and stared at Lian Rong for a long time. No, she was thinking. They said the late empress lived to be in her forties. "You must be joking. It sounds as if you’ve never met your mother. That’s not how it works!"
Lian Rong’s smile did not fade; it actually grew brighter. "Who told you I am the daughter of the late empress… umm."
Before she could finish her sentence, Gu Hengbo quickly covered her mouth. "Lian Rong, I’m slowly getting used to everything here, but saying random things is not right."
Lian Rong didn’t try to take Gu Hengbo’s hand away from her lips. She breathed in the scent coming from her hand, not remembering how long it had been since they had been this close, even if it was just a simple skin-to-skin contact.
Feeling that Lian Rong was zoning out, Gu Hengbo noticed her gaze becoming strange, and she quickly lowered her hand, the warm breath making her palm feel tingly.
Just as it became awkward, the waiter shouted as their meals arrived, and Gu Hengbo sighed in relief.
