Chapter 84: Title
Inside the big tent, warmed by the charcoal fire, someone was happily eating grapes that were bigger than her face, not bothering to spit out the skins. In this cold weather, she didn’t know where she found such juicy grapes.
Since yesterday’s milk incident, Lian Rong had been made fun of by someone all day, and even now, just thinking about that look in her eyes made her laugh.
Gu Hengbo sat on a small stool, popping grapes into her mouth while flipping through a ledger. Her eyes were nearly crescent-shaped with happiness.
"You’ve become a little wealthy woman now," a cheerful voice came from nearby.
Gu Hengbo’s hand wobbled, almost sending the plate of grapes crashing to the floor. She lifted her head in annoyance and glared at the visitor. "Can’t you walk quietly? You scared me!"
Lian Rong smiled gently. "You looked so absorbed."
Gu Hengbo shot her a sideways glance. "Lian Rong, why do I feel like you’re different from before?"
Lian Rong raised an eyebrow and continued to smile. "Now we are friends, but with your age, you’re not just my niece; you could even be my daughter! Setting aside everything that happened before, as an elder, isn’t it good for me to treat you this way?"
Gu Hengbo paused, feeling an indescribable emotion bubbling up inside her. She felt a bit annoyed. Lian Rong’s attitude was just what she wanted, even if it was a little sudden, it was still the best she could hope for!
But… it wasn’t fair!
"You make it sound nice, but have you ever seen an elder treat someone like you treat me?" Gu Hengbo said, frowning.
Lian Rong looked at her calmly. "How do I treat you?"
"Just… like that," Gu Hengbo blurted out, her entire face turning red! She couldn’t keep her cool! It all started when Lian Rong began talking about being friends! Why should she be treated like trash and then pushed away? If anyone was going to kick someone, it should be her kicking Lian Rong!
"Ah Heng, are you blaming me?" Lian Rong’s gaze suddenly deepened.
Gu Hengbo wished she could sit on the ground and count ants. She sat on a small stool while Lian Rong quietly stood in front of her. The atmosphere suddenly became very awkward.
“Lian Rong, you should go. You can’t stay here,” Gu Hengbo turned her head stubbornly, not knowing what was wrong with herself. Lianyang had just left, and her mind should have been filled with thoughts of him. But why were her dreams last night all about that bastard Lian Rong? And they… Damn it! Even if she was experiencing spring fever, it should be about men!
While Gu Hengbo was lost in her chaotic thoughts, she heard a faint “okay” from above. She paused for a moment, and before she could react, Lian Rong’s voice spoke again, “I was rude. Don’t worry, I won’t bother you anymore.”
When Gu Hengbo snapped out of her daze, Lian Rong was no longer in the tent. She stared blankly at the tent curtain, wondering if she had said the wrong thing.
In the next few days, Gu Hengbo wasn’t in her usual state. When someone presented her with bills, she merely flipped through a few pages carelessly. One time, she almost set them on fire.
“Damn! Am I on drugs?” Gu Hengbo kicked her chair hard, but the pain made her jump up and scream.
Hearing some noise from outside the tent, Gu Hengbo impatiently shouted, “Talk to me another day, I’m busy… Hey, Wuyang? What’s going on?”
Wuyang, dressed in white, had stains of blood all over her, looking very distressed. At that moment, Gu Hengbo didn’t have time to tease the beautiful ice princess, because she saw the person in Wuyang’s arms. The red robe was an abnormal shade of red, and a sleeve dangling outside was dripping with more red liquid.
Gu Hengbo took a deep breath and spoke without hesitation, “What should I do?”
Wuyang placed the injured person on the bed, gasping slightly, “The crown princess doesn’t need to do anything. Just leave everything to Wuyang. The prince has internal injuries, and during the healing period, no outsiders are allowed to disturb. Thank you for your trouble.”
Gu Hengbo almost said she was no longer a crown princess, but thinking it wasn’t the right time, she calmly nodded, her eyes scanning the person on the bed. The light-colored sheets were already soaked with a bright red stain. She bit her lip and said, “I’ll be outside. Call me if you need anything.” Without waiting for Wuyang to respond, she lifted the curtain and left.
Wuyang looked at the person on the bed, her brows tightly knit. Wasn’t it agreed that they would stay here for a few days before taking the person back? Why was there suddenly a fuss?
It was the first time she saw her master sulking. With a helpless sigh, Wuyang began to treat the injuries.
The wind outside struck Gu Hengbo’s face painfully, but she felt nothing. Her mind was filled with the image of the bloody figure. This was the first time she saw Lian Rong like this since she had known him. Normally, Lian Rong’s eyes always sparkled with cheer, but now they were tightly shut, and the whole person looked lifeless, as if… as if she were about to die.
“Damn it, Gu Hengbo, you jinx! Even if Lian Rong gives up her life to meet the king of hell, he wouldn’t want her!” Gu Hengbo looked up at the gloomy sky, feeling heavy in her heart. She tightly pressed her lips together, every little movement from inside the tent set her nerves on edge.
After an unknown amount of time, some people from the farm came several times, but Gu Hengbo sent them away like flies. The surroundings were quiet; apart from the sound of the wind, all she could hear was her own breathing and the irregular thumping of her heart. The sky grew darker, and the wind outside grew stronger. Gu Hengbo felt more alert rather than tired. She promised herself she would be the first to rush in if anything happened inside. She knew that even if the person inside wasn’t Lian Rong but anyone else, she would act the same way.
While Gu Hengbo was lost in thought, she suddenly heard Wuyang’s anxious voice from inside the tent. Without saying a word, she lifted the curtain and rushed in, “What’s happening? I knew this androgynous person wouldn’t… die!”
Gu Hengbo froze as she saw the blood trickling down the edge of the bed. Her mind went blank, and she nearly bit her tongue while speaking, her legs gave way, and she kneeling on the floor.
Wuyang appeared frighteningly pale, probably from just having treated Lian Rong’s injuries, currently leaning against the side of the bed, gasping for breath.
“Lian, Lian, she… died?” Gu Hengbo’s lips trembled, failing to form a complete sentence.
Wuyang opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but seemed too exhausted. She quietly closed her eyes. She was too tired. Lian Rong’s injuries were too severe, and their strengths were too different. What she had done for Lian Rong barely counted for nothing. But having come this far, Wuyang finally understood how far her master would go for this crown princess, even risking her life!
