“I don’t need it. I’m really fine. What I need right now is work.”
“After the Tang Shang case, I should’ve given you a break.” Bian Qian leaned forward slightly, with a hint of authority in his voice. “This vacation is mandatory. You can’t refuse. I won’t assign you any work for this month.”
Zhen Yi held back her anger, stood up abruptly, and left.
“No need to thank me!” Bian Qian waved at her, watching her leave in a huff, then shook his head with a helpless smile.
The scent of fresh grass and a cool breeze filled the air, bringing a peaceful atmosphere to the elderly care home.
Zhen Yi sat by the large window in the activity hall, playing chess with the patients. Below the psychiatric hospital was a care home for the elderly. Every morning, Zhen Yi would bring her grandfather there before heading to work at the hospital, and in the evening, she’d take him home.
As it turns out, she was already a trained volunteer. This was her sixth day of service, and her heart felt calm and alive, like the sunlight dancing on the grass outside the window.
Rather than giving, she felt she was receiving.
Spending time with adorable psychiatric patients in recovery, far away from the malice and turmoil of the world, surrounded only by the simplest of hearts, Zhen Yi’s mood slowly improved.
After finishing the chess game with the patients, Zhen Yi went to tidy up the rooms. As she walked, she accidentally took a wrong turn and found herself in a quiet hallway. At the end of the hall, sunlight poured in through the window, and clusters of small yellow flowers were blooming beautifully. A gentle breeze blew through, causing the flowers to huddle and sway together.
Zhen Yi couldn’t help but look outside at the scenery, passing by a room where a white curtain fluttered in the air. The room was bright and spacious, with warm decorations. Someone was lying in a large, soft recliner, hooked up to various white wires. Yan Ge, dressed in white, stood nearby, recording data from the instruments with a pen.
This was the first time Zhen Yi had seen Yan Ge in days. She remembered to keep her distance from him. Before coming here, she had specifically asked about his schedule, knowing that he spent most of his time at the research institute rather than the hospital.
Now… Zhen Yi froze. She had been daydreaming and walked the wrong way, apparently passing through a restricted door. This area should be part of the research institute. She needed to leave quickly before Yan Ge noticed her.
But it was too late.
Yan Ge looked up and saw her. Behind his glasses, his gaze was calm. From his perspective, her expression at this moment was both silly and dazed, like a little raccoon accidentally wandering into a human cabin. The person on the recliner stood up, exchanged a few words with Yan Ge, and then left the room.
Zhen Yi stood there awkwardly. After a short while, Yan Ge also came out, but he didn’t ask how she ended up there. He simply said, “Are you getting used to the volunteer work?”
“Mm, it’s going well.” She didn’t know that one day, while passing through the hospital, Yan Ge had seen her in the activity room, wearing a volunteer nurse’s uniform, dancing playfully with the patients like a kindergarten teacher.
Trying to find a topic of conversation, Zhen Yi pointed to the equipment in the room, “What were you doing just now?”
“Recording the effects of combining several psychiatric drugs.”
He didn’t mention the names of the drugs, otherwise, she would’ve been dizzy. “Is it like an experiment?”
“Mm.”
Zhen Yi was startled, “An experiment on people?”
Yan Ge’s gaze fell on her face, “Is that strange? Any drug meant for human use eventually has to be tested on people.”
Zhen Yi shrank her neck, “But who would agree to such an experiment?”
“Volunteers.”
“How noble, sacrificing for science.” Zhen Yi suddenly felt a deep sense of respect.
“They get paid.”
“…” She choked on her breath.
“Besides drugs, do you also test non-drug treatments on people?”
“Yes.”
“Then I want to be a volunteer too.” Zhen Yi volunteered herself eagerly.
“You just want to see a doctor but don’t want to pay, right?” Yan Ge bluntly exposed her true motive.
“…” She chuckled sheepishly and suggested, “Fine, how about this? If you ever need a lawyer in the future, I won’t charge you.”
“I don’t have any plans to kill anyone.”
“… So cold.”
“Maybe a divorce case…”
“I don’t have any plans to get married.”
What about An Yao? Zhen Yi was puzzled, but since it was his personal matter, she didn’t pry.
Yan Ge walked ahead with his file folder, “If you want to try something, I’d recommend electroconvulsive therapy.”
“Electroshock therapy?” Zhen Yi frowned, displeased, “Yan Ge, are you trying to torture me?”
He seemed to smirk slightly but didn’t answer.
Thinking about it, Zhen Yi wondered if she might have misunderstood. She asked, “Did I get it wrong? Is that treatment actually good?”
“No, it’s not.”
“But it seems like a lot of doctors use it.”
“The patients suffer a great deal.” He said, “You can’t treat patients as if they have no feelings.”
Zhen Yi’s heart trembled slightly, feeling a bit touched and warmed. “What other non-drug treatments are there?”
“There are many well-established physical and psychological therapies. Suggestion therapy, desensitization… Although its scope of use is limited, hypnosis therapy is quite good.”
She remembered that small hypnosis he had done on her at the mall. “That must take a long time to learn, right?”
“Mm.” He had reached his private lounge and opened the door a crack. He turned back and said, “Zhen Yi, do you need someone to talk to?” His eyes were clear, and his voice was gentle, “You can think of me as a friend or a doctor, whichever you prefer.”
Zhen Yi’s heart skipped a beat. He already knew. A friend… really?
