An Yao clicked her high heels, even the way she leaned forward with her arms folded was graceful: “Don’t move too much, or your arm might dislocate again.”
Zhen Yi pretended not to hear, determined to match An Yao’s elegance. In just a few seconds, she tidied her hair and clothes, transforming back into her radiant self. Her expression was cool and dignified, as if she hadn’t just rolled down the escalator, dislocated her arm, and screamed in pain.
Yan Ge glanced at her indifferently but said nothing.
She had always been like this—the first thing she’d do after a hug was check if her hair was messed up. Even if she was going to the supermarket in the middle of the night, she’d dress like a celebrity in disguise. If she ever got pushed off a building, her main concern while falling would probably be whether her clothes were in disarray.
Yang Zi stood to the side, utterly confused about the dynamics between these three. Before she could ask Zhen Yi, Song Yi’s assistant called, summoning her to discuss a case. Reluctantly, she had to leave first.
Yan Ge silently watched Zhen Yi for a moment, about to say something when An Yao stepped forward, gently reminding him, “We have things to do at home…”
Home? Zhen Yi felt like she’d been shot through the heart, a cold wind whistling through the hole.
“Goodbye!” Without a care for politeness, she interrupted them and turned away, leaving them with a particularly beautiful view of her back. No matter the situation, she always wanted to be the one to leave first.
Without looking back, she strode out the door, only to find Si Gui already waiting at the entrance, arms crossed, grinning mischievously.
“What are you laughing at?” Zhen Yi snapped.
“Tsk tsk, that was your ex, huh? And you told me he’d aged badly. Zhen, you’re such a sour grape!” Si Gui teased gleefully.
“Shut your mouth!”
Si Gui burst out laughing, then glanced back at Yan Ge and An Yao’s retreating figures. She switched to the casual tone she used when hanging out with guys: “Damn, that kind of legend actually goes shopping with his girlfriend? Wait, he has a girlfriend?”
Zhen Yi couldn’t be bothered to respond. Si Gui chased after her: “So, how far did you two go back then? Did you sleep together?”
Zhen Yi shot her a glare that could kill.
“What? Have you seen his body? If you slept with him, you totally scored.” Si Gui continued, “Knowing your shameless personality, you probably jumped him first, right?”
Zhen Yi smiled coldly: “Ah, Si, I’m so proud to have a friend like you.”
“You’re welcome,” Si Gui said cheerfully, throwing an arm around Zhen Yi’s waist and groping her playfully. “Come on, tell me how you managed to snag him.”
Ah, the old days. It was actually quite simple. She pursued him relentlessly, trailing him twelve hours a day, even following him into the boys’ restroom. She did so many crazy things that even the entire school, including the teachers, started betting on whether Zhen Yi could win over Yan Ge.
She chased him from middle school to high school. Three whole years.
One day, after he’d told her for the umpteenth time, “Stop bothering me,” she answered for the umpteenth time, “Then be my boyfriend!”
That day, after a long moment of serious thought, he said: “Alright, three conditions.”
She wasn’t allowed to touch him without his permission; in return, he would accompany her to the playground after school.
She couldn’t follow him around all the time; in exchange, he would eat lunch and take naps with her at school every day, plus an extra hour.
She wasn’t allowed to express her affection for him in public through singing, posters, broadcasts, fashion, graffiti, flyers, dancing, or anything like that; in exchange, when people asked, he would say she was his girlfriend.
“It’s kind of a shame,” Zhen Yi smiled sadly as she recalled the past, “I can’t chase after him like that anymore. It’s too late.”
Si Gui gaped at her for a long time: “Zhen Yi, wow, I never knew you were this bold and shameless.”
“…” Zhen Yi kicked her.
After their playful exchange, Zhen Yi sighed, saying, “When you like someone, it all feels worth it. You don’t think about anything else. Looking back, I don’t regret it at all. It makes me happy, actually. Those days were precious.”
Si Gui didn’t ask why they broke up, just said: “What about now? Would you chase him again?”
“No,” Zhen Yi answered firmly. She had never liked competing with other women for a man.
Si Gui assumed Zhen Yi had long since moved on and sighed: “One last question.”
“What?”
“Did you two ever sleep together?”
Zhen Yi shot her a meaningful glance.
In truth, they had done many things together after they started dating. Holding hands and hugging were always sneak attacks from her side. Their first kiss was something she tricked him into. There was even that one time, during a scorching summer, when she forced him to hide in a cramped, dark, and stuffy wardrobe with her.
Zhen Yi raised her eyebrows: “Anyway, no matter who he’s with, he’ll definitely remember me.”
“Tch, there you go again with your cosmic-level narcissism.”
“Like you didn’t know me since day one.” Zhen Yi lifted her head proudly. “The word ‘narcissism’ was invented for me.”
Before she realized it, a flood of memories came rushing back. There was a time when Yan Ge always carried chocolates with him. She thought he loved them and became irrationally jealous. She blocked his way, bouncing in front of him: “You like chocolate so much, why don’t you eat me? I’m delicious!”
“You…” He frowned, pressing his lips together before saying, “I really feel like covering my eyes.”
Back then, the phrase “I can’t bear to look” didn’t exist yet.
“I’ll cover them for you,” she had said eagerly, leaping up to kiss his beautiful eyes.
As Zhen Yi was lost in her thoughts, Si Gui suddenly waved toward someone behind her: “Prosecutor Yin, over here!”
Zhen Yi snapped out of her reverie. Prosecutor Yin? Could it be…
She turned to see a young man in casual clothes—quite different from his sharp, suited appearance in court. The casual attire made him look more laid-back and easygoing.
This was Yin Duo, one of the top lawyers in the country. Because of his talent, he was frequently hired by the prosecution for high-profile cases, and eventually, he transitioned to becoming a prosecutor. His good looks and extraordinary demeanor made him the object of admiration for many female lawyers.
Coming from a wealthy family, he had opened his own law firm right after graduation. Far from being a spoiled rich kid, he was a high-achiever, focusing on his career to the point of neglecting his personal life. Within a few short years, he rose to the top of the legal world before leaving private practice to become a prosecutor.
“Senior Yin Duo!” Zhen Yi stood up and bowed.
Yes, they had gone to the same school. At their school, strict hierarchies were in place—juniors had to bow when greeting their seniors. Back then, Zhen Yi didn’t care about such things, calling him by name without a second thought. Now, however, she found herself being more polite, a mark of her genuine respect.
Come to think of it, before she met Yan Ge, Zhen Yi had also drooled over Yin Duo’s good looks.
Yin Duo stopped and looked down at her: “Zhen Yi.” His voice was deep and smooth, as if someone who lived by words naturally had a pleasant tone.
When he was in his second year of high school, the whole school had been in chaos because of a girl in her first year. That girl had spent three years chasing after a boy, and eventually, the entire city knew her story.
