“…Yes.”
“After his death, you followed the news online?”
“…Yes.” Her answer came slowly.
“Did you leave a comment?”
“No.” That response was quick.
“Did you light a candle for him?”
“…No.”
“Did you celebrate his death?”
“…Yes.” She frowned, answering slowly.
“Given his past behavior, do you think his death was well-deserved?”
“…Yes.” The polygraph showed no anomalies—she was telling the truth.
Zhen Yi also despised Lin Ziyi, feeling indifferent about his death. But hearing such a straightforward response from Song Yi still left her with a sense of moral burden.
“Even though he died a gruesome death, you don’t feel sympathy for him?”
“Yes.”
Zhen Yi began to wonder—was Yan Ge trying to uncover the real reason why Song Yi was unwilling to testify?
“You felt nothing when he died?”
“…Yes.” Song Yi clenched her fist lightly as she slowly answered. The skin conductivity reading on the polygraph suddenly spiked, the line jumping high. Song Yi couldn’t see the screen, but she noticed Zhen Yi’s surprised expression.
“Did his death make you sad?”
“No.”
“Did his death make you happy?”
“No.” But again, the polygraph showed a significant spike in the readings.
“Do you hate him?”
“No.” She shook her head, but both her breathing and pulse lines rose sharply.
“Do you believe Lin Ziyi and his friends really raped Tang Shang?”
“Yes.” The quick answer showed a stable reading.
“Did he ever hurt you?”
“No.” Another quick and stable response.
“Did you kill him?”
“No.”
“Do you actually feel grateful to the person who killed him? If you could help the murderer, would you?”
“No.” She gritted her teeth, and the skin conductivity readings showed abnormalities again.
Zhen Yi’s eyes were glued to the rapidly changing lines on the screen, her focus sharpened.
Yan Ge remained calm, holding Song Yi’s gaze for a few seconds before swiftly moving on to the final set of questions:
“Do you think the killer should be punished?”
“Yes.” Song Yi sat up straighter, and her breathing pattern showed abnormalities.
“If you were the one in charge, would you let the killer go?”
“No.” Her anger flared, and the skin readings spiked once more.
“Did you know he was going to die before it happened?”
“No!” Song Yi glared at Yan Ge, her pulse and breathing skyrocketing.
“Do you actually know the killer?” Yan Ge’s question hit hard, and Zhen Yi froze. Was Song Yi not just an uncooperative witness, but now hiding and protecting the murderer?
Song Yi’s face turned pale, and she bit her lip tightly, refusing to answer. But the polygraph lines spiked with intensity. Suddenly, she started pulling off the sensors from her chest and stomach, snapping them off in frustration.
The tension in the room thickened. In the dead silence, the only sounds were the sharp clicks of the equipment being unhooked.
“Just one last question,” Yan Ge said, seemingly unaffected by her resistance. His voice remained calm. “Have you ever been raped or gang-raped?”
“You bastard!” Song Yi screamed, her face turning crimson as she jumped out of her chair. The blood pressure cuff and sensors fell off, but the electrodes on her fingertips remained attached. The polygraph machine went wild, with the lines erratically spiking.
Zhen Yi stayed eerily quiet, her gaze locked on Song Yi’s twisted, enraged face. In that moment, it became clear—Song Yi wasn’t just a witness to this case.
She might not have been close to the victim, but that didn’t mean she lacked a motive. Revenge against society was a powerful drive. Now, Song Yi was a suspect.
Seeing Zhen Yi remain silent, Song Yi’s eyes bulged with fury as she yelled, “Zhen Yi, you bastard! You’re my lawyer, and you just stood there while this jerk attacked and insulted me? You’re supposed to be so amazing, right? But you’re useless! It’s because of you that Tang Shang died. Now you’re going to get me killed too! You want to be a famous lawyer? Where’s your so-called skill?”
Si Gui stepped in as Song Yi lost control, pushing her back into the chair.
The polygraph machine continued printing its readings, the beeping loud and steady.
Zhen Yi stayed composed, but her gaze turned icy.
Song Yi, I warned you, don’t hide anything from me. I’m your lawyer. Even if you really did kill someone, I would still defend you, staking my morals to protect you! All I asked was one thing—don’t lie to me. But even that, you couldn’t do it.
