“Did you drink beer?”
“No.”
“Did you drink a cocktail?”
“Yes.” There was hesitation.
“Are you worried I’ll ask something else?”
“No.” She lifted her head, eyes wide.
“Did you only have one drink?”
“No.” The answer came quickly.
“Did you have just two drinks?”
“…”
“Do you find the polygraph fascinating?”
“Yes.”
“Did you only have two drinks?”
“…Yes.” There was a long hesitation.
“Two cocktails made you drunk enough to lose awareness?”
“…I…” She didn’t answer.
Zhen Yi rubbed her brow in frustration.
Even without fully understanding polygraphs, she could sense that at this rate, every little detail Song Yi was hiding, even the ones Zhen Yi hadn’t anticipated, would eventually be uncovered.
She realized now how little she knew about polygraph tests—it was a major oversight. Yan Ge was fully prepared. He wasn’t just a researcher in need of physiological data; the moment he arrived, he had taken control of the situation. It was likely that the idea to use the polygraph hadn’t come from the police or Si Gui, but from him.
Earlier, Si Gui had mentioned the police simulating Song Yi’s movements from the surveillance footage, suggesting she was a suspect, pressuring her to take the polygraph. But on closer thought, that alone wasn’t enough to label her a suspect.
They had fallen into a trap.
The questioning continued. “You’re aware that if you lie, the polygraph will detect it?”
“Yes.” Song Yi looked uneasy and glanced at Zhen Yi for help. But Zhen Yi, for once, couldn’t think of a solution.
“When you passed the corner of the hallway, you saw a shadow?”
“Yes.” The answer came quickly.
“Are you nearsighted?”
“No.” Another quick response.
“Were you wearing sneakers that day?”
“No.” Again, a quick reply.
“Were you wearing high heels that day?”
“Yes.”
“Did you think the shadow was a child?”
“No.”
“Did you think the person was young?”
“Yes.”
Zhen Yi inhaled sharply. She wanted to signal Song Yi with her eyes—Yan Ge was subtly shifting the context of the questions.
But Song Yi was answering too quickly, and the moment passed. Zhen Yi couldn’t believe it—her courtroom trick, the one she frequently used to trap witnesses, was now being used against her own client.
“At the time, did you think the person was suspicious?”
“No.”
“After the incident, did you think the person was suspicious?”
“Yes.”
“You actually have a clearer impression of that person, don’t you?”
“…” Song Yi hesitated, stunned.
Zhen Yi bowed her head. The way Yan Ge systematically and logically broke down the sequence made it almost impossible to lie convincingly.
“Were you wearing stylish flats that day?”
“No.”
“Are you a model?”
“Yes.”
“You actually have a clearer impression of that person, don’t you?”
“…”
“Did you get a good look at them?”
