Chapter 41: News and Orders
"Come out," Yang Lingrui said, calling into the cave.
The person inside, trembling, walked out.
The Scarred-faced man, upon seeing the injured but alive Yang Linghu, felt a pang of concern.
Upon noticing that Yang Lingrui had already reached the mid-stage of Gathering Qi, he panicked even more and simply knelt on the ground with a thud.
The two expected him to beg for mercy, but instead, he cried out, "Please, esteemed seniors, I am willing to serve you like a beast of burden. Please, save my elder brother! Save him!"
"Your elder brother isn’t dead yet?"
Yang Linghu was somewhat surprised; Liao Feng had only had half a breath left at that time.
The Scarred-faced man quickly nodded.
The two exchanged glances and instructed him to lead the way.
Upon entering the cave, they found Liao Feng in such a state that he was hardly recognizable, still clinging to life.
"Many years ago, my elder brother and I explored a cave and obtained a pearl; now he is alive only because he is holding that pearl in his mouth," the Scarred-faced man explained, wiping away tears. "But at this rate, it’s not a solution; in at most three days, my elder brother will exhaust his breath and die."
"I see."
Yang Linghu then asked, "What are both of your names, and what is your background? Why were you mixed up with Zhang Chen?"
The Scarred-faced man did not dare to be vague in his response; he recounted his story in detail.
His name was Han Wang, and he was sworn brothers with Liao Feng and the Delicate man, whom Yang Linghu had killed with a punch.
They were originally Loose cultivators from the Eastern Wilderness but later joined the Seventh Prince’s rebel army. Then the Eastern Wilderness split, and the country fell into chaos. Even cultivators like them could not protect themselves and had to flee to the outskirts.
Thus, they became bandits and entered the territory of the Tiger-Chasing Dynasty.
Later, they encountered Zhang Chen. Because he possessed that treasure and they couldn’t do anything about it, they agreed to work for him to survive.
When Han Wang mentioned Zhang Chen, he asked what had happened to him.
Upon learning that Zhang Chen was dead, he clapped his hands in joy, saying, "Good! He deserves it! He deserves it!"
He had witnessed the battle, and if it weren’t for that treacherous Zhang Chen’s betrayal, his elder brother wouldn’t have ended up in such a miserable state.
"Thank you, esteemed seniors, for avenging my elder brother!"
"You hate Zhang Chen but not me?" Yang Linghu chuckled.
Han Wang replied, "We were the ones who attacked you first; you were only acting in self-defense, but Zhang Chen is a true traitor and scum!"
"Heh, interesting. However, we cannot save your elder brother, nor is it possible. You might as well give him a quick end."
Hearing this, Han Wang’s expression darkened, and he felt a wave of sadness.
"Do you still know the situation over there in the Eastern Wilderness?" Yang Linghu asked.
"I know… a bit. We have traveled to many places alongside the Seventh Prince," Han Wang replied.
Upon hearing this, Yang Linghu and Yang Lingrui returned to the cave entrance to discuss.
"What should we do? Kill him?" Yang Lingrui asked.
Yang Linghu pondered for a moment and said, "At present, we do not fully understand the situation in the Eastern Wilderness. Let’s bring this person back home and let the Elder inquire before making a decision."
"Alright, then let’s spare his life."
The two returned, and Yang Linghu said to Han Wang, "Take out that pearl. Clinging to life like this is torture; it would be better to die quickly."
Han Wang felt reluctant, but he had to admit that Liao Feng’s suffering was worse than death.
After taking out the pearl, Liao Feng exhaled his last breath and became silent.
After burying his body, the three returned to the Yang Family.
Inside the Yang Family’s Forbidden Area, Yang Lingqing had lost her focus on meditation. When Chen Yang sent a thought, saying that Yang Linghu was safe, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Just then, Yang Guanfeng and Zhao Qi returned home from Baishi Town, bringing back very important news.
The dynasty had issued an order for all families and sects under its rule to send people to the eastern border to quell the chaos.
The list of names included the Songshan Yang Family, ordering Yang Guanfeng to go.
"Sending you, Elder? That won’t do!"
"Not just me; Wang Xiong, Zhang Tianqi, and several heads of the families from Baishi and Willow Leaf towns are also on the list."
Yang Guanfeng clasped his hands behind him and looked up at the sky, saying, "This is the dynasty’s way of weakening the families under its rule. Even though our Yang Family has become independent from the town, as long as we remain within the territory of Tiger-Chasing, we cannot defy the order."
Although Yang Lingqing felt dissatisfied, she could only shake her head helplessly in the face of reality.
"The Eastern Wilderness is in chaos, and the borders are no longer under control. It is likely filled with danger, with smoke and serpents lurking about," Yang Lingqing sighed.
Yang Guanfeng approached and patted her shoulder, smiling, "Don’t be disheartened. With you at home, I am at ease. Moreover, this trip is not without its benefits."
Since the dynasty was mobilizing so many people, they naturally had to offer corresponding rewards.
For any family that sent people, they could receive spiritual crystals as rewards based on the number and level of individuals sent, paid monthly by the dynasty.
"Just consider it a long trip to work."
"The Elder still has the mood to joke."
As they conversed, the Pine Forest Thick Earth Formation began to stir.
"Elder, Lingrui and Linghu have returned!"
The three went to welcome them, and upon seeing Yang Linghu covered in wounds, they were taken aback.
Yang Guanfeng hurriedly took him inside to examine him closely. Fortunately, the injuries were all physical and did not damage his foundational cultivation; with some proper rest, he would be fine.
After instructing Zhao Qi to take care of Linghu, Yang Guanfeng returned to the main courtyard.
At this time, Han Wang was already kneeling on the ground, waiting for questioning.
"Elder, this man is the little leader of that bandit group from the Eastern Wilderness."
"Oh? The Eastern Wilderness?"
Yang Guanfeng stepped forward, scanned Han Wang from head to toe, and quickly learned most of his background.
"You cultivate the Copper Skin Iron Bone technique, right?"
"Indeed!"
"What martial arts do you specialize in? Is it leg techniques or whip kicks?"
"Senior, it’s whip kicks!"
Just answering these two simple questions caused Han Wang to break out in a sweat, feeling an immense sense of pressure.
He hadn’t even told Yang Lingrui and the others which cultivation methods or martial arts he practiced, but Yang Guanfeng saw through him at a glance. How could he not be scared?
"Well, you come from a bandit group, so according to the rules, you should be executed."
"I know! Thank you, seniors, for sparing my life! I am willing to make a blood oath to repay your kindness!"
Seeing him recognize the situation, Yang Guanfeng witnessed the blood oath in front of him.
"Death can be avoided, but live with your guilt is hard to escape."
He said, "Since you know some things about the Eastern Wilderness, come with me to quell the chaos at the border. This will count as atonement."
Hearing that he had to return to the Eastern Wilderness, Han Wang instinctively felt a pang of fear.
After all, he had fled to Tiger-Chasing just to save his life; he never expected to return to that place again.
But he also understood that surviving was already a great fortune, and he had no choice but to accept it without the right to refuse.
So, he gritted his teeth and declared, "Han Wang is willing to follow and serve the seniors!"
"Good, rest in the outer courtyard for the next two days. We’ll set off together on the third day."
"Yes!"
In the following two days, Yang Guanfeng had deep discussions with Old Yu and talked a lot with the three children.
At midnight on the second day, when everyone was resting, Yang Guanfeng went to the ancestral hall alone.
He first bowed to the ancestors and then approached, kneeling before Chen Yang.
"I, Yang Guanfeng, head of the Yang Family, pay my respects to the Immortal Master."
"The Immortal Master possesses unmatched powers and has saved my Yang Family in times of peril multiple times, protecting the future descendants of the Yang Family. The Immortal Master’s great kindness will be remembered for generations!"
"I have dedicated my life to my family, achieving what I have today is already satisfying. However, I am not in control of my fate and am about to embark on a long journey. I can’t help but feel unsettled. I came here to bother you, and I hope the Immortal Master will forgive me."
"This journey may be fraught with danger, and I have prepared myself not to return. If the family were to decline without anyone to take over, or if disaster strikes and great peril befalls us, I boldly ask the Immortal Master…"
At this point, Yang Guanfeng’s weathered face began to tremble, revealing the deep struggle within his heart.
Seeing this, Chen Yang was also moved. He thought Yang Guanfeng would likely ask him to preserve the bloodline of the Yang Family in times of crisis.
But the next moment, when Yang Guanfeng spoke again, Chen Yang felt a shock to his spirit.
"I dare to be that unworthy sinner!"
"If disaster truly does strike, please do not let the Yang Family burden you, just follow the Dao!"
