Back in the bedroom, Chi Yin pulled out her phone and messaged each of Qiao Ziman’s friends to ask where she had gone. Every reply confirmed that Qiao Ziman hadn’t contacted any of them. She couldn’t have gone back to her parents’ home, could she? It just wasn’t possible.
Then, Chi Yin remembered someone—Jiang Shu.
[Transfer: 10,000 yuan. Where did Sister-in-law go?]
Jiang Shu replied, [I don’t know!]
Anger flared in Chi Yin’s eyes as she shot off another message, [Return the money!]
Jiang Shu responded, [Don’t be like this—I really don’t know. I’m still at the hospital taking care of Mom.]
Five minutes later, another message came through:
[Sis, don’t say I let you down as a little sister. I asked Sister-in-law for you, and she said she’s going out to cool off for a week. We’ll see after a week.]
A week? What does “we’ll see after a week” even mean? How can a wife hold a grudge overnight—even though they’re not married yet! Is Qiao Ziman planning to use a week of cooling off as a way to distance herself for good? The thought sent a chill down Chi Yin’s spine.
She grabbed her car keys, ready to bolt out the door, but her gaze was suddenly caught by a black notebook. She paused. She vaguely recalled that Qiao Ziman always carried that black notebook with her, yet this time, before leaving, she’d tossed it to Chi Yin.
So… A thought popped into Chi Yin’s mind.
Could this be the “way out” Qiao Ziman left for them?
Thinking that, Chi Yin’s heart eased a bit. She reached out toward the notebook, then hesitated and pulled her hand back. Peeking into Qiao Qiao’s private things didn’t seem very polite, right? But since Qiao Qiao had said that honesty was essential between them, maybe just one glance wouldn’t hurt? Chi Yin’s mind was in turmoil.
Ten minutes later, she convinced herself with a perfectly reasonable excuse: Qiao Qiao hadn’t taken the notebook with her on purpose—it was meant for Chi Yin to see. With that thought, all her guilt vanished. She sat at the table and opened the thick notebook.
Inside were sections titled [Love Notes], [Confession Plan], [Theoretical Knowledge Reserve], and even [Little Mute’s Mistake Record]—a whole volume filled entirely with entries about herself. Every word, every stroke, every line spoke of how seriously Qiao Qiao took their relationship. It turned out that Chi Yin had always been part of Qiao Qiao’s future plans, never once forgotten.
Chi Yin read through it over and over again, her eyes welling up with tears until the morning light grew bright. Only then did she carefully close the notebook, grab her car keys, and leave the house.
At eight in the morning, at the TOC Building, Qiao Ziman greeted the receptionist with a nod. “Good morning, Sister Qiao.”
“Good morning,” Qiao Ziman replied.
Then someone called out, “Sister Qiao, Chairman Chi—no, I mean, your girlfriend—went to your office about half an hour ago.”
The company had allocated Qiao Ziman her very own office, and she had only just moved in these past couple of days. As she walked in, she replied absentmindedly, “Got it.”
No sooner had she arrived than she saw Chi Yin sitting on the sofa, clutching a bouquet of roses and waiting expectantly. The moment Qiao Ziman entered, Chi Yin straightened up and greeted, “Good morning.”
Qiao Ziman’s silent expression spoke volumes. Did she really follow her all the way to the office? Qiao Ziman’s peripheral glance noted that Chi Yin’s makeup was exceptionally bold today—vibrant red lips and voluminous waves that made her look like a little enchantress. Shaking her head, she closed her eyes and silently recited her mantra three times before coolly asking, “Why are you here?”
Chi Yin gently placed the roses on the table, her ruby lips parting as she spoke in a soft, lilting tone, “I didn’t see you all night. I missed you so much that I had to come see my girlfriend.”
Today, Chi Yin wasn’t being silent at all—her lips looked as if they’d been glossed with honey. Qiao Ziman restrained a slight smile and replied in an icy tone, “You’ve seen me? Now go back.”
Still seated and unmoving, Chi Yin asked, “May I stay here and keep you company at work? I promise I won’t disturb you.”
Qiao Ziman’s expression remained unreadable.
Chi Yin thought to herself, How am I supposed to work with you here?
Ten minutes later, Qiao Ziman crumpled a scrap of paper and tossed it into the trash.
One hour later, as Qiao Ziman stared at the drawing on the paper—a detailed portrait of Chi Yin—she began to muse aloud. “Big boss, don’t you need to work?”
Chi Yin offered a wry smile. “I do, but what’s work compared to having a girlfriend?”
“Even if I lost my job, my girlfriend would support me,” continued Chi Yin.
Qiao Ziman’s eyes flashed with exasperation. How did Little Mute become so slick-tongued? I can’t stand it!
Before she could hold back a snarl, Chi Yin added, “Anyway, sooner or later you’re going to marry me. Being taken care of by your wife is only natural, right, Boss Qiao?”
In response, Qiao Ziman flung a crumpled piece of paper in her direction. “Who wants to be your wife? You shameless rascal!”
Qiao Ziman couldn’t take it anymore. With a cold tone she announced, “I’m off to a meeting,” and strode out of the office.
From that moment on, Chi Yin launched a full-scale campaign: every day, rain or shine, she sent flowers, delivered meals, and whispered sweet nothings.
A week later, Chi Yin accompanied Qiao Ziman back to her hideout—a modest rental in an old residential complex. As Qiao Ziman was closing the door, Chi Yin reached out to stop her.
“Qiao Qiao,” she pleaded, “your deadline for running away is up. Will you come back home with me? Your mom, your grandmother, Qiao Xiaohua, and I all miss you.”
Qiao Ziman turned her back to hide the phone screen as she texted the doctor.
[Doctor, it’s exactly been two weeks! My girlfriend’s concussion is all clear now, right? Can she do intense exercise again???]
[Where are you? Where are you? I’m freaking out!]
Doctor: [All clear. How many times did you ask today?]
A surge of anger leapt inside Qiao Ziman, yet she kept a calm exterior.
“I’m giving you three sentences. Convince me to end this runaway phase,” she said.
After a moment’s thought, Chi Yin replied, “I love you.”
“You never shut up with the sweet talk, do you?” Qiao Ziman snapped, pressing her fingernails into her arm. “What’s next?”
“I adore you,” Chi Yin continued.
Those three words made Qiao Ziman clench her heart; her pulse pounded so hard it felt like it was crashing against her chest. Turning away, she clutched her chest until, after a long pause, she finally said, “There’s only one sentence left.”
Stepping forward, Chi Yin wrapped her arms around Qiao Ziman’s waist and rested her head gently on her shoulder. “I’ve also moved your safe into our new home.”
“What do you mean? I don’t understand.”
Then Chi Yin added, “Qiao Qiao, I read your notebook.”
“I still don’t get it—explain it clearly, Little Mute.”
Tightening her embrace, Chi Yin’s nose brushed against Qiao Ziman’s neck as she whispered, “I want to cry for you to see.”
