Chapter 37: The Emergence of Another Anomaly
In a stretch of days, Fengyun Wuji stood still, his eyes vacant, transfixed by the ebb and flow of the submerged skulls. Mo Li was unfazed, well aware that this newcomer, like the others before him, was momentarily enveloped by the shock of his circumstances.
For a full decade of days, Fengyun Wuji remained as motionless as a statue. Mo Li let out a quiet sigh, settling down in a corner, contemplating, “The next siphoning of true energy is a score of days away; for now, let him relish this fleeting tranquility.” A chill draft swept through the subterranean dungeon, causing Mo Li to draw his garments tighter, his mind wandering to memories of days past filled with heroic valor.
The day after, as Fengyun Wuji awoke and his eyes fluttered open, his first inquiry was, “Elder, does that entity (nodding toward the demon god statue) absorb true energy in proportion to the amount one possesses?”
Mo Li was taken aback, not expecting such a question to occupy his thoughts, but he quickly affirmed with a nod.
Fengyun Wuji, with a nod of understanding, reclined against the wall and fell into silence. For the first time, Mo Li perceived the young man’s behavior as peculiar; no one could divine the machinations of his mind.
By the third day, the aura surrounding Fengyun Wuji had noticeably diminished, and by the fourth, it had weakened further still. Day by day, his aura waned until, by the sixth, it was nearly on par with Mo Li’s.
“What are you about?” Mo Li finally inquired, unable to contain his curiosity.
“I’ve condensed all the true energy within me into a singular mass, harbored it in my Dantian, and sealed it away.”
“Futile; you’ve merely postponed the inevitable depletion of your energy.”
Fengyun Wuji met the remark with a smile. He had been pondering the fact that since a world repels beings from another realm, the optimal strategy would be to either overpower this world’s repulsion or to assimilate with it. As for the former, the repulsive force undoubtedly varies with the magnitude of the power from another world within a creature. The greater the energy, the greater the repulsion. To overpower a world’s repulsion seemed an impossible task, thus assimilation stood as the only viable approach.
The first step, retracting his own energy, had been achieved, yet the external pressure remained unchanged. Fengyun Wuji understood this was due to the weakened body, now devoid of true energy’s support.
Fortunately, the intensity of divine consciousness is not closely tied to true energy. Beside Mo Li, Fengyun Wuji, having reached the third tier of the “Mind Sword Body Great Law,” the third layer of celestial realm, radiated his consciousness outward in a ripple-like manner, unaffected by the world’s repulsion.
Suddenly, his consciousness became hazy. The next moment, Fengyun Wuji felt as if he had transformed into an intangible energy, enveloping a vast expanse, with everything within this space laid bare, visible in minute detail.
The network above the prison flowed with various energies, densely interwoven. The walls were inscribed with peculiar, ant-sized green characters. Fengyun Wuji could not decipher the mysteries of these interconnected characters. Extending further, the dense aura was marked like nodes on a meridian map, with varying strengths of aura, and several consciousnesses swept through the air, clearly weaker than Fengyun Wuji’s own.
Fengyun Wuji had initially planned to communicate with them but ultimately decided against it, directing his consciousness instead toward a bend in the water prison’s passage, where a demon stood guard beside a torch.
This demon had the head of a bull, the body of a pig, the legs of a goat, hooves like a horse, and a tail of a pig, wielding a bronze fork, with a bronze ring through its nose, and covered in fine, black hair a foot long.
Fengyun Wuji’s consciousness permeated the demon’s body, causing it to freeze with widened eyes, its consciousness completely eradicated by Fengyun Wuji without a second thought.
The passage remained silent, as no one suspected that the demon leaning against the wall had become an unresponsive, walking corpse. Fengyun Wuji’s consciousness swiftly scanned the demon’s body structure, internal organs, and meridians, particularly the demonic energy within.
The body structure of demons is undoubtedly distinct from that of humans, with more resilient and robust meridians, and an astonishingly strong recovery force. However, in general, the meridians of demons are not significantly different from those of humans.
The most distinctive feature of the demon realm is the dense demonic energy. Fengyun Wuji discovered that the demonic energy here shares similarities with that found within demon realm experts, both being negative energies. However, the demonic energy in the demon realm is undoubtedly superior in both quality and quantity compared to that in the ancient space.
The sound of footsteps approached, and in his consciousness, Fengyun Wuji perceived a group of strange demons in black robes striding toward him. Not daring to reveal his presence, he retracted his consciousness like a receding tide, bringing back a cluster of demonic energy extracted from the low-level demon.
For several days, Fengyun Wuji closed off his six senses and meticulously studied the demonic energy within his body. The death of the demon seemed to be treated as an accidental incident, attracting no attention.
Despite his best efforts to preserve it, the demonic energy extracted from the low-level demon dissipated swiftly. Fengyun Wuji, in the form of consciousness, ventured out of the cell once more, using the same method to eliminate another low-level demon and acquire more demonic energy. After several instances, he had killed over twenty low-level demons in the underground water prison, gathering more than twenty clusters of demonic energy, which provided him with sufficient insights into these energies.
On the 27th day since entering the underground water prison, a faint, elusive black demonic energy emanated from Fengyun Wuji’s motionless form. Mo Li, who had previously ignored Fengyun Wuji, opened his eyes, his expression changed, his turbid eyes intently fixed on the faint demonic energy surrounding Fengyun Wuji.
“Another mutant!” Mo Li pondered for a long while before uttering these words through gritted teeth, which was also the first sentence Fengyun Wuji heard upon regaining consciousness.
Fengyun Wuji opened his eyes, looked at Mo Li, his gaze clear and bright…
