Chapter 56: Duanqiao River Mission
Crossing Hongshan, the twelve-person team traveled north, passing through vast fields and walking along a stream until they stopped on a hillside.
In the distance, they saw an endless expanse of wilderness, with the grass turning yellow.
From this hillside, the strong winds blew refreshingly one after another.
A clear, wide river crossed the horizon, dividing the land and sky into two.
This river was Duanqiao River, appearing calm and tranquil, showing no signs of chaotic-level monsters.
But everyone knew that the Thousand-eyed Demon was the most deceptive when it came to souls, and what they saw from such a distance was surely false.
Suddenly, everyone turned to look sideways.
Not far away, on another hillside, another team of the Black Armored Army approached, led by a man entirely shrouded in black armor, concealing even his face.
He glanced at everyone and then led his team in another direction, clearly not intending to cooperate with Yun Wen’s team.
“Chao Jiazhe, Chao Zichong, I wonder what he’s been up to all these years, allowing his numbers to drop to just six. It’s strange… I wonder how much strength he has now,” Yun Wen said, adjusting his weapon.
The seven great families all wished for each other’s downfall.
Years ago, he had been ambushed by Chao Zichong, and even now he had no chance for revenge. Seeing him again stirred some thoughts.
“It’s time to take action. I can’t let Chao Zichong steal the credit.”
Yun Wen turned his gaze to Yun Ye and the others. “Yang Shi, Zhuo Zhongjie, Wang Lixian, you three go and probe! During your mission, Zhuo Zhongjie will be in command. Military orders are as solid as a mountain; anyone who disobeys will face execution!”
“Yes, sir.” The three exchanged glances, clasped their fists, and with spiritual patterns glowing on their foreheads, they headed toward Duanqiao River.
This kind of probing was extremely dangerous, but they had no right to refuse.
Zhuo Zhongjie, a towering figure, drew out his spiritual tool, a large blade. “There are certainly Water Element monsters in Duanqiao River, and I am of the Earth Element, so I can block them. You all stay alert to changes in the terrain and don’t let that throw you off.”
“Understood!” Wang Lixian set aside his conflict with Yun Ye and focused intently on scanning their surroundings.
Once a chaotic-level monster showed up, even with their Spiritual Roots activated, they might not escape. A careless move would mean death.
Yun Ye remained vigilant, noting Zhuo Zhongjie’s words.
For safety, Yun Ye quietly activated his Heart Fire, entering a state of acceleration.
Should there be any unusual movement, he would respond as quickly as possible.
The three stepped into the wilderness for several minutes, and the monsters remained silent, lying in wait.
This silence made their hearts tense as they got closer. Suddenly, Yun Ye exclaimed, “It’s getting foggy!”
The other two’s pupils shrank.
A visible white mist swirled around them, rapidly increasing and reducing their visibility!
“Wang Lixian, clear the fog!” Zhuo Zhongjie shouted.
“I’m already working on it, but it’s useless. I can only keep visibility at about ten meters!” Wang Lixian responded, as numerous water rings surged around him, gathering and dissipating the fog in the air.
But the scale was different!
Whether it was because the chaotic-level monsters were too strong or because multiple monsters were working together, he couldn’t completely eliminate the white mist and could only maintain a visibility of ten meters within it!
“Boom!”
Zhuo Zhongjie suddenly stomped heavily on the ground, causing a giant stone to rise up, and then continuous sounds of trembling followed.
“This is an Earth Element monster!”
Yun Ye, standing to the side and not fully defensive, saw the attacking objects were several stone pillars.
Earth counters Water; if it were a Water Element trying to break Zhuo Zhongjie’s defenses, it would be extremely difficult.
But if it were an Earth Element, that might not be the case!
“Flowing Fire!”
Yun Ye unleashed semi-pure flames, raising his hand as flames covered the entire front, blazing for several seconds.
“Uwaaaah!”
This move had an impressive range, directly enveloping the hidden unknown monsters in the white mist, producing chilling cries.
“Did it actually hit? Good job, Yang Shi! Wang Lixian, open up the visibility!”
Zhuo Zhongjie strode forward, plunging his large blade into the ground. When he pulled it out again, it had transformed into a giant blade nearly seven or eight meters long, all sharp stone spikes. As he spoke, the mist ahead dispersed, revealing a charred armored monster with burnt skin.
Rumbling!
With a force like Mount Tai, the stone blade cleaved through the earth, the armored monster howled and raised its arms trying to block, but was instantly crushed into mush.
“Do not let your guard down! Although the armored men are not powerful, there may be armor ghosts nearby. If we are careless, we might turn into puppets!”
Zhuo Zhongjie growled, tossing his stone blade back to its normal state.
“Here they come again!”
Yun Ye shouted as he raised his hand, just in time to see countless water arrows breaking through the white mist. The fierce flames rippled and blocked in front of him.
He simply didn’t trust the aristocrats; he would ensure his own safety.
Zhuo Zhongjie indeed did not let Yun Ye down; he conserved his energy, creating only half the stone walls.
The water arrows swiftly smashed through the stone walls, while Zhuo Zhongjie raised his stone shield and quickly advanced, aiming to crush the attackers directly.
His defense successfully absorbed the attack, and Yun Ye and Wang Lixian in the back were not hit by the water arrows.
However, surprisingly, as the water arrows flew past the stone walls and rushed by Yun Ye and the others, they suddenly reached out their hands to grab Yun Ye and Wang Lixian.
“Ahh!”
Yun Ye’s semi-pure flame ripples did their job, roaring flames burned fiercely, causing the water arrows to shriek in agony as they took shape in the air, revealing frog-like creatures.
Wang Lixian had nothing more to worry about; as a Water Element Spiritual Law master, he had long discovered the issue with the water arrows.
These frogs flew towards him and he easily counter-controlled and crushed them.
“Boom!”
Zhuo Zhongjie calculated that the two would handle the Cold Water Frogs and had already charged deep into the mist. A white mist monster suddenly became visible, and Zhuo Zhongjie smashed his stone shield into its face, shaking the ground violently.
“Ahh!”
The white mist monster was large in size but was smashed into a bloody pulp, screaming. However, this degree of injury was too light for a monster; it quickly started to recover. Suddenly, invisible claws descended from the mist, striking Zhuo Zhongjie and forcing him to half-kneel.
“Piercing Forest!”
Zhuo Zhongjie’s black armor shone brightly, connecting to the ground. Amidst the rumbling sounds, countless stone spikes shot out, directly lifting and piercing through the white mist monster.
As the control over the white mist monster was lost, the invisible claws disappeared, and Zhuo Zhongjie jumped up sharply, swinging his large blade, which enlarged and covered the giant stone. With one strike, the white mist monster exploded, spraying strange blood everywhere.
With one white mist monster dead, the concentration of the mist visibly decreased, but it was still hard to see too wide an area.
“Ha… ha… ha…”
Zhuo Zhongjie was a little out of breath, but feeling the vibrations from his identity token, he smiled slightly.
The white mist monster was a high-level monster, on par with armor ghosts; even teaming up to kill it could count as several ordinary-level tasks.
These identity tokens would accurately record everything, and the settlement would happen once the mission was complete.
The resources from the government were ultimately stronger than those of the aristocrats, especially the training time in the Spirit Land; to progress further, one could only earn contributions.
The three continued forward; as long as Yun Wen didn’t call for a stop, they couldn’t stop.
However, the real difficulties were coming. A swarm of monsters surged forth, almost coming from all directions.
Flames exploded, water surged fiercely, and stone formations were laid out. The three advanced step by step, using their exquisite Spiritual Laws to carve a path.
Their mission was to draw out chaotic-level monsters and prevent situations like traps that could cause heavy losses for the Black Armored Army!
…
Outside the white mist, Liu Wujing focused on the bronze mirror, continuously deducing.
Yun Wen was growing a bit impatient. “Are you almost done? This white mist can block Spirit Sense, but it can’t block your broken illusion tool, right? If you don’t hurry up, Chao Zichong will steal all the credit!”
“White mist? I’m deducing Chao Zichong, but unfortunately, it’s not beautiful at all,” Liu Wujing shook his head. “Chao Zichong is actually playing with poison techniques. With his Spirit Sense, he wants to control poison arts? Ridiculous.”
“What?” Yun Wen leaned in closer to see the bronze mirror.
He saw in the bronze mirror the image of a young man in armor becoming transparent; he had deep black circles under his eyes, with cracked pupils that appeared as if he were blind. His gaze was extremely scattered.
Yun Wen could see that this young man was infested with many poisonous insects crawling all over him, especially around his eyes.
It seemed that his eyes were simply replaced by spherical poison insects, an extremely chilling sight!
