Chapter 10: Superior Food Additions
As the sun began to rise, the sound of the gong echoed throughout the Academy, startling all the new students awake.
Yun Ye woke up early and was not disturbed by the noise; he quickly headed outside.
In the dormitory hallway, one after another, the new students in black rushed towards the source of the gong. Yun Ye was not the only early riser.
Yun Ye was a bit surprised, but he soon came to understand.
As long as it could change their fate, working hard was worth it.
The saying "children of the poor grow up early" held a weight that those who lived in comfort could not comprehend!
Yun Ye calmed his mind and discreetly observed the new students along the way.
Poor, rich, geniuses—just from their demeanor, Yun Ye could roughly classify them.
And in just two days, these new students had already become distinctly separated.
Young masters played with young masters.
Commoners mingled with commoners.
And there were quite a few, like Yun Ye, who stood alone.
Soon, they arrived at their destination.
It was the Number One Training Ground.
One by one, the teachers of the Academy stood on the high platform at the front, heads lowered, waiting for something.
"Everyone, stand straight, and line up according to sequence!"
The gray-clad figures instructed.
Among them was Ma Zhi, whom Yun Ye recognized but did not know by name.
Dressed in gray, they were not students but servants employed by the Academy, the voice of the Academy.
Even the children from wealthy families obediently complied and lined up according to their sequence.
The so-called sequence was based on the room numbers on the tokens.
This represented the order of arrival at the Academy.
Yun Ye had the designation of "Bing Seven," meaning he was the seventh to report to the Academy.
Of course, more accurately, it was "Eight-Year-Old Bing Seven," as Yun Ye was just the seventh eight-year-old to report.
Once everyone stood in line, the training ground became orderly.
Yun Ye was not in the front row.
It seemed they were arranged by age, from youngest to oldest, and thanks to this, Yun Ye had the opportunity to observe many students.
From his observation, there were about fifty students in the age groups of five, six, and seven, significantly fewer than the new students who were eight years old or older.
Yun Ye also noted that among this new group of students, girls were much fewer than boys.
(Is it because girls are not valued, resulting in many being overlooked?)
Yun Ye felt it wasn’t the case.
According to the rules of Mingzhu Village, even girls would be taken to test for their Spiritual Roots; this chance to change their fate was not limited by gender.
However, Yun Ye could not judge if other places were the same.
He made a note of this situation and planned to explore further when given the chance.
And so, after lining up, everyone stood waiting until noon. Only then did Liu Quan, the Deputy Officer of Spiritual Techniques, enter the Academy, surrounded by a crowd of teachers and armored soldiers.
Liu Quan did not hesitate; he walked up to the high platform step by step and reached the front. His gaze swept over all the students, and his indifferent aura compelled even the proud young masters to lower their heads.
The Deputy Officer of Spiritual Techniques was the most powerful and influential figure in Baishi Town, aside from the Officer himself.
These fledglings had no qualifications to resist him.
“I am Liu Quan, the Deputy Officer of Spiritual Techniques in Baishi Town and also the head of this Academy. You should know that the Academy exists to train soldiers; in other words, this is a military camp!”
“If you complete your studies here, you will become soldiers ready to go directly to the battlefield. Every skill you learn is the foundation for your blood-soaked battles. You better work hard, or the demon caves of the battlefield will become your graves.”
“Of course, all of this is too early for you. After all, the majority of you cannot awaken your Spiritual Roots from mortal beings.”
“Ha ha, last year there were three hundred students, and only thirty-two ‘leapt over the dragon gate,’ about one in ten. It seems that is a relatively high ratio in recent years.”
“This year, your cohort has a total of two hundred twenty-five students. I hope there won’t be fewer than twenty who succeed, or I won’t even be able to fill the positions I have—so work hard; as long as you can awaken your Spiritual Roots, you have a future.”
Liu Quan spoke in a very realistic manner.
His actions matched his words.
Once he finished talking, he wasted no time and left directly.
Only after he departed did the Academy teachers dare to look up and quickly begin assigning classes.
Students were divided into different classes based on age and talent.
Yun Ye was placed in the Eight-Year-Old Bing Class and followed a teacher in blue into the classroom with a group of eight-year-olds.
The classroom was spacious but only had twenty sets of desks and chairs.
Yun Ye entered and chose a seat in the second row, not too far back and not too far forward—quite moderate.
He glanced around and noticed there were only fifteen students in the entire class.
Moreover, they were all children from poor families.
“I am your main teacher, Yu Yu.”
A young man in a green robe stood at the podium and paused. “The so-called main subject is the Qi Cultivation Technique.”
“I will teach you the Qi Cultivation Technique and correct any mistakes. I won’t be responsible for anything else, so don’t ask me about them. If you want to learn other skills, go to different classes by yourselves.”
“However, remember that only the main subject and subsidiary subjects will be recorded in your end-of-year grades; the minor classes do not count, so do not waste too much time on them. Even for subsidiary subjects, do not expend too much effort."
“To awaken your Spiritual Roots, the only way is through the Qi Cultivation Technique. No matter how strong the combat techniques of the subsidiary subjects are, if you cannot awaken your Spiritual Roots, they are all in vain—meaningless.”
“Alright, let’s go around and introduce yourselves, starting with you.”
Yu Yu pointed to a student in the first row.
The sturdy student with a tiger’s back and bear’s waist stood up and nervously said, “Yes, teacher, my name is Li Zhenhu, and I love eating meat… Um, I want my whole family to have enough food!”
“Next.”
Yu Yu spoke indifferently.
“My name is Zhang Cheng. I like martial arts and want to become a revival of Spiritual Roots to join the Black Armored Army!”
The second student was a chubby boy who knew information that Yun Ye had no idea about.
It seemed that Liu Quan’s guards wore black armor.
Shi Baiyan’s group of soldiers did the same, all dressed in heavy black armor.
Soon, it was Yun Ye’s turn. He struggled to say, “Yang Shi, I like hunting and want to awaken Spiritual Roots.”
The students in the classroom showed expressions of surprise.
Could there really be someone with a throat problem?
His speech was sluggish, which posed a huge disadvantage, suggesting that communication would be very inconvenient, making him at least unsuitable for being part of the army.
Regardless of gender, after glancing at Yun Ye and finding him rather ordinary, they turned their attention elsewhere.
“Next.”
…
The Qi Cultivation class quickly ended. Yu Yu waved his hand, and several gray-clad servants entered with baskets of food.
Each person received a portion, placed in front of them.
Yu Yu said, “This is a serving of D-level Superior Food. After each main class ends daily, you will receive this additional meal; eat it here, and afterwards, you can do whatever you like.”
Everyone’s eyes lit up.
Including Yun Ye.
A serving of D-level Superior Food was worth ten dark copper coins!
Their family could only save about fifty coins a year, and five meals would deplete that. It was a small blessing to save a little.
Yun Ye began to devour his meal, and although he couldn’t say it was delicious, once it hit his stomach, a warm sensation spread throughout his body.
D-level Superior Food, though the lowest grade, was equivalent to three portions of the same quality when consumed!
Yun Ye felt that once digested, he could practice the Qi Cultivation Technique at least four more times, and swallowing more food five times would pose no problem at all.
This thrilled Yun Ye; if he had Superior Food every day, his training speed would certainly progress by leaps and bounds!
The other students in the classroom also exclaimed, discovering the extraordinary effects of the Superior Food.
In an instant, many faces changed; the effectiveness of the Superior Food was so apparent. If they could have a second serving…
Unfortunately, the Superior Food had to be eaten on-site.
